Languages offer career help Taking a foreign language in high school may be to a student's advantage. According to a recent survey, ever 700!0 of the businesses responding said they would like to hire people with some knowledge concerning a foreign language. Many prominent fast-food restaurants, such as Pizza Hut and McDonalds have businesses in Germany. Corporations like I.B.M. have a need for people who have some type of foreign language skills. Other jobs, such as teaching, translators for the United Nations, and other subsidiary liason employees, require a foreign language. Also, the government employs many people for the United States embassies located in Austria, Switzerland, and France. These are very high paying jobs, and have the added bonus of travelling to other countries, such as Germany, Spain, or Paris. Extensive language training, however, is required for high-level translators. There are special translating schools for this purpose. Otherwise, further study in college is usually necessary to attain a proficiency in any language, although two or three years of high school study may be enough to separate the non-language student from the language student in the business world. Cole cel bra tes 25 years Mr. Eugene'Cole, a math instructor at North Kansas City High School since 1966, has taught math for a total of twenty-five years. When asked why he has taught math for so many years, he replied that he liked working with the students and that he thought of math as an interesting subject. This year, he taught trigonometry, math analysis, calculus, and basic math. The requirements for being a math teacher are so many hours of educational background, depending on the level a person plans to work with, and one has to have a major in mathematics. Mr. Cole also thinks that any teacher, Needs to have a desire to meet the needs of other people. They also have to have a certain amount of tolerance for the students' behavior. Mr. Cole graduated from high school at Saint john's Seminary in 1946. He went on to Rockhurst College, where he did his undergraduate work, until 1950, Then he went to Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg, and majored in education in 1957. He then obtained his Master's Degree in math at Notre Dame, in 1962. He served in the Air Force for five years as a meteorologist. In 1954, after the signing of the Korean cease fire, Mr. Cole went over there, but did not participate in actual combat. When asked what he would be doing if he weren't teaching, Mr. Cole said that, with his educational background in mathematics, he would probably be an engineer or work in the science field. ll Top left: Mr. Cole lectures to his trigonometry class on the importance of sine and cosine in a trigonometry function. After hours during the school year, Dr. Cross is still involved with education as he helps coach girls' track, serves as a building representative for NKCNEA, teaches graduate classes for teachers, and does consulting work for other school districts, Away from school he serves on the Board of Directors of the local American Red Cross chapter, is director of aquatics for Clay County, writes and is involved with his church. Dr. Cross has had a total of 15 years at Northtown. He taught 12 years here before going to Kansas State University at Manhattan where he earned his doctorate and taught for six years. When he returned to the district, he spent four years at Northgate until its closing and has been back at NKC for three years. And in his spare time . . . 23 Q X fi,
