Dedication Throughout the years we have come to know the dedication as only an acknowledgement of achievement. However, this year, in striving to supertede. but not eliminate tradition, we have approached the dedication aware of the parallels between our efforts in the construction of the yearbook, and the qualities of the man we have chosen. Not only was he the president of student council at his high school, but he was on the Deans list through- out high school and college. Though his academic achievements were numerous, he had a keen interest in sports and excelled in basketball, being on the All- Metro team of his junior and senior years at Southeast High School. During his years of college, he succeeded in receiving his BA degree at Westininster and his MS in physical education at Emporia State Teachers' College, Also at Westminster, he was chosen for the MCAU All-Conference basketball team his sophomore, junior, and senior years, But it seems as though he will never quit learning. Besides still attending college, this teacher has become a part of a rewarding learning experience through teaching. The communication that prevails in his classroom is rarely accomplished in any high school or college situation. In his past eight out of Hfteen teaching years, he has taught world history, American history, Missouri history, health, physical education, family life, and philosophy at Northtown. Outside of teaching, but within the realms of learn- ing, he has dabbled in the ministry, coached at various high schools, is an astute business man, and is presently manager of The johnny Robinsons Sports and Social Club. Not only is he fair to his students, a good neigh- bor, and a church activist, he is interested in listening to others and in understanding them, making him truly aware of what people are all about, In short he is genuine. He can be described no better than in the choice words of his wife, Mary, He's the greatest person in the world. This year's yearbook staff, with the sincerest feelings of love and admiration, dedicates the 1971 Purgold to William Carroll Cross.

On a lonesome, lazy Sunday afternoon this fall, North Kansas City High School experienced one of its marked trag- ediesg the fire. Before flames had the opportunity to spread beyond the gym and auditorium, passers-by contacted local authorities and assistance arrived within minutes to combat it. Even though the gym was totally destroyed, we are grate- ful to the efforts of the area fire departments. Appreciation cannot stop here, however. The patience of the administration and their concerned deliberation in inspecting damage is equally worthy of praise as are the many students who volun- teered in cleaning up the soot and water damage. The teachers and students must be noted also for their patience in operating under limited strain and limited facilities. And of course, all of the efforts employed in the reconstruction of the gym and auditorium. gli- In spring the Variety Show had to make use of other facili- ties and the plays and musical patiently awaited the reopening of the auditorium. Our adjustments have overcome the obstacles of this tragedy but the tragedy itself will remain in the mem- ories of students for many years to come. A C.. f
