Seldom in a young personis life do events occur that provoke him to demonstrative patriot- ism. Such an event occurred on November 22, 1963. On that Friday afternoon the school was shocked into silence and the inert patriotism of each student was aroused. Unified with the whole nation, and even the world, the youth of America experienced heart-ache, but at the same time re- ceived a challenge to take up the torch of freedom, liberty, and peace . . . passed to them from a great American. Therefore, we, the 1964 Purgold Staff do hereby dedicate this book, as a pledge of youth, to the memory of John Fitzgerald Kennedy and to the democratic principles for which he lived. mln the long history of the world, only a few generations have been granted the role of defending freedom in its hour of maximum danger. I do not shrink from this responsibility - I welcome it. I do not belleve that any of us would exchange places with any other people or any other gener- ation. The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it - and the glow from that fire can truly light the worldf' 4444444444-44
