I've seen and heard some mighty interesting things on these trips, and while we're waiting for the plane to take off, Iall just review a few of the more important ones. Here we have a list of some of the beauties of the class of ,4Q who have achieved national fame. Pat Wright was Miss America of 1951, Mina Maloy was voted the most photogenic cover girl in 1953, and in 1954 Mary Foley was chosen 'cThe Secretary I'd Like Most to Have on My Kneeu by the businessmen of America. Christina Thomsen was chosen Mrs. Housewife of 1955 by the 'gYoung Wives of America Club. Alice Ham- ilton and Alberta Bower are some of NKC,s members in this club. Dick Wolverton was elected president of the KU student body in 1953, and the last I heard he was still there. In 1958 lim Ashby won the Indianapolis Midget Auto Races and I heard recently that he now drives new Fords through flaming hoops in an auto stunt circus. ' Marjorie Abbott won the 1959 Nobel Prize in Literature and Shirley Turpen took the one in Science the same year. She discovered a formula whereby tall girls can become short and short boys can become tall and her company is being swamped with orders. Something about Bill Kephartfs eligibility to play college football for the seventh year came up last fall, but I think they got around it by explaining that he couldnlt help it if he could carry only two subjects a year. Here comes the pilot, so we will soon be leaving. Oh, dear! It's Richard Stanhart, and he flies just like he used to drive-only more so. He' likes flying better, 'cause there's more room up there. We,ll start this sight-seeing jaunt in Washington, where Anita McPike and Frances Willis are campaign- ing for Presidency and Vice-Presidency on the Let's Move the Capital to NKCN ticket. Gallup Poll says they will gain an overwhelming majority of electoral votes. On to New York where Pegge Rhoads is now starring in Annie, Get Your Man. In blazing lights, I se-e that Shirley Faubion is singing Carmen,' at the Met,' tonight. Margie Carson Wilson gave a piano concert at Carnegie Hall last night, and Bill had to leave right in the middle of an arpeggio to perform a delicate operation on Bill McClanahan. Poor Mac, he probably won't pull through. I-Ie's been sick quite some time and has lost a lot of weight. Richard Sutterby has an exhibit of some of his latest works at the Metropolitan Art Gallery. It's time to leave the big city now and head for other places where '49ers are at work. Turning on the radio while Hying toward Miami, I hear Walter Collins and the latest news. Oh, dear! What,s this? That notorious gangster, K'The Headn Blann has finally been convicted by Chicago's crime-busting District Attorney, Dallas Divelbiss. He was captured single-handed by FBI Agent Gene Elliott. Following the news is a musical interlude featuring songs by Ioan Kimbrell, the new singing sensation of radio and television. Might as well keep to the southern route and head for sunny California. This reminds me. Last summer I took a burro ride down into the Grand Canyon and who should I see crawling over the rocks with a magnifying glass, but Ben Kelley, the noted geologist. Here in Hollywood we might be able to find a few of the '49ers. David Milum is being hailed by critics and fans as a second lose Iturbi, while Elaine Green takes time off from her acting duties to do quite a bit of free-lance writing. I don't see any more familiar names or faces, so we'll leave for the old home town. First item of 'interest along Armour Road is the main office of the Konomos Cleaners. Dean has branches all over Kansas City now. Next door is Artis Photography Shop. We snap everything from babies to 'babesf is their motto. What's that up there? Looks like Murl Talbott hanging Christmas lights from the roof tops. My, they put those things up earlier every year. Paperl Paperlv Well, if it isn,t Iunior Workman selling newspapers. Buying one, I see that Don Lawrence is editor-in-chief of the Daily Dirt,', which, Iunior tells me, is a NKC newspaper of the higher type. A' visit to Northtown wouldn,t be complete without a jaunt through the halls of the high school. There are several familiar names among the faculty. Pat Dulohery is the gym teacher, Martha Alpert teaches English, and Bonita Brown has started a French department. lean Caraway has realized a life-long ambition and is now Dean of Girls. A notice on the bulletin board says that Ierry Arnold and her Fighting Amazonsv are to give a basket- ball demonstration in the field house tonight. In this trip across the United States and in our visit to NKC, we have found that wherever we go, we'll Hnd a member of the class of ,49 doing sonething worthwhile and doing it welll A salute to the forty-niners!
