He eagerly followed through with a program that led to the efficient operation of our high school this past school term. Since the North Huntingdon Township High School has been officially established, the student body realized the importance of the job of gaining a reputable name for the school. The school now has that name - thanks to the man who has worked steadily to bring it about. For these many reasons, we have chosen to dedicate this 1948 edition of the Norhiscope to our principal, Ellsworth D. Schwartz. 1 art.: lalkx it owl' with Iii!! ami' .lliriauz Rc 1 if mutzn .f""""""s. if? Q 1- A if af Xxx " ii x I 1' 0' -W-ww... OARD OF EDUCATIO Miss Betty liclcberg, competent sec- retary of the .Xdministrative offices, helped to make our school operate efficiently. .Xlthouigh kept busy mak- ing daily announcement sheets, taking dictation. and managing funds, she always had time to help students. Miss lfckberg displayed her interest in school activities by helping' In chap- erone representatives of our publica- tions' stads on their trip to Cleveland. The assistance and friendliness of Nliss lfckberg has been appreciated by everyone at North Huntingdon. 1 , - North Huntingdon Township is for- tunate in having a Board of liducation comprised of men who are interested in the welfare of its high school stu- dents. The Board this past year has been responsible for decided improve- ments in our school program. ln the athletic department four thou- sand dollars Was spent to provide bleachers for our football held. Trans- portation for the Band and Forensic League was provided by a Board eager to give the students uf North Hunt- inlgdon advantages of a well-rounded school life. They also supported plans that representatives ot' our publica- tions' staffs made to attend the N. S. l'. A. Convention in Cleveland. An- other note-worthy a d d i tio n to our school was the purchase of up-to-date encyelopedias as well as other new books for the library. This intensified program has result- ed in the prosperous operation of an independent North Huntingdon Town- ship lligh School. The graduating class of '48 sincerely wishes the Board unerring success in their future plans ral maintaining a school with high standards, and a building equipped with all modern conveniences. lr.-fly ffl-A-tw, i I -QD- DORIS BADDELEY B S South Dakota State College neat and petlte was kept busy wlth her future homemakers spent much of her spare tlme managmg the affalrs of the I' E G Club departed from us at m1d f6I'l'Tl ACULTY JOHN BRACE A B Carroll College M Ed sity of Plttsburgh was responslble for the boys enthuslastlc gym and health ached the varslty basketball Unn er classes co team admired and well llked by all the students lhxfzx lmra 111 r Y, ffrjll Cutllx 5 L IV1ll1a11z C, ourhuzozu Ijllfllflll Haus 1111111 llznucm .ii 5 9 La rv. SCHOOL EWS TODAY Miss Marian Siegel, as adviser, helped to pull the staff out of its many difficul- ties. Much of the credit goes to capable Marjorie Fleming, editor-in-chief, and to jean lfyler, who was kept busier than a bee editing features. jean XYalter, who managed the important job of news- editor, could usually be heard urging her reporters to "get the news." Sports- editors, Herald Green, Calvin Carroll, and Fred Mull, under the direction of Hr. Wfilliam Couchenour, brought every phase of sports to the readers. joan Byers, copy-editor, had the interesting job of re-writing news articles, and one of the most fascinating positions was held by Helen Lusebrink, who sent Hi-I.ites to other schools in exchange for their school paper. The business end of the paper was well-managed by Ruth Hunt, whose chief worry was how to make money. George Humelsine headed the advertising depart- ment. Circulation managers, Florence Kunkle and -Iacquelyn Rice, were kept busy sending papers to home rooms and to the Hi-I.ites advertisers. During Tlianksgiviitg vacation, six ca- pable staff meinbers journeyed to Cleve- land as delegates to the National Scholas- tic I'ress Association Convention. Here they learned the fitter points of making a better newspaper at meetings and lec- tures. A special attraction at one of the three dances, sponsored by the staff, was the revealing of f'Mr. Hush"-Russell Collie, a well-known sophomore, whose identity had been hidden in clues posted about the school. The staff agreed wholeheart- edly that this year proved enjoyable as well as beneficial to them all. v- N Louis Laffoon .ICON .Y1'1l'f1"X' CII1'1111 ll1'11x!1'r l1'11ll1 H11111 1V111I1'r P111111: .1 ,1'1111f1 ul 1111- llc HRISTMAS HOP c,11L' 111 1111- 1111151 511111-ssf111 1-v1-1115 111 1111- s1'1111111 V1-111' was 1111- :1111111:11 L1111'1s1111:1- 111111 111-111 131'1'1'111111'1' 19 Nl11111s11'- 1111111 l11111111':1111111 s1:1111 '1111L'1111'I11k'1I1 111 111'1'111':1111111f 1'1-1111-1'111 '11' llll111L'5 :11111 111-111-111 1 ff1'1'1. 1 11111111 L111'1h1l11Il'- S 1111-111:1111 1-11-111 111 1111 lXKl111lg'XY11i 111-- l141IXX11111Q' 111 X1'1111'l' 1'1J1ll1Z lx 1 1 I1-:111 X1-1111-1' 115 H111-1-11 111 . .a. l. 5L'Ill1Jl' 111 Qing' :1111 111111 111511 N1-11-1-11-11 1111111 1111111, 1111111111 1411 111111-. 1,11111f 1.1111111111 1111111111-1111 11111 11-V 111 111111iK' 1111 1111- 1 X11 UT1. 1111111 1111111 211141111 1111'.11-N11"1 1111-111N11l"1 1-x1'1-111-111 11111f11' 1111111 11111111'1111111-11 111 1111- x111'1'1-H 111 1111X :111111 1 1 VI! 1111 11 11111 f1'1'f.11'111l1f 111111 Q E N ean Nedley x -. f ef af 4 " 2 f"v41xf 44 H5 :r1 .: WW f,,4 'S 39 O U R K IN G Walter Pomtz 60 AN Besides being an outstanding musical group, the band transmitted to the student body its pep and energy at rallies and at football games. Civic- ininded, the girls packed baskets, sent boxes to students with prolonged illnesses and made valentines for the liraddock Orphanage. The club carried these activ- ities through with the zeal that is char- acteristic of the Tri-Hi-Y. The Sadie Hawkins' Day dance and the Valentines Day dance, sponsored by the organization, proved that they could successfully carry out this type of activity. Mr. XVilliam Couchenour The group of boys at North Huntingdon organized for the purpose of developing high standards of Christian character is known as the Hi-Y. To become a mem- ber a student must show qualities of leadership and responsibility, and must possess the right attitude toward his classmates. Under the capable supervision of Mr. XYilliam Couchenour, the Hi-Y became one of the most active organizations in the school. Between classes, the members showed their excellent spirit by patrolling the halls and keeping traffic down to a minimum. Many took part in intramural sports, playing basketball and football with the various classes. A day not-soon- to-be-forgotten by the new members was put aside for initiation. Traditionally, an impressive joint induction with the Tri-Hi-Y took place during the middle of the year. The responsible position of president was held by Louis Laffoon, who had lValter Pointz, Nick lfecko, and Kenneth Tamewitz as able officers to assist him. Successful planning and cooperation among the boys helped to make this year one of the best. XYith this attitude prev- alent among its members, the lli-Y at- tained the goals that are set forth in its motto: "Clean Living, Clean Speech, Clean Sportsmanship, and Clean Scholar- ship." "To accomplish things thought impos- sible, you must work together." This state- ment was proven true by the three T,E.G. organizations. The sophomores and juniors concentrated their attention on the opera- tion of the canteen. The seniors learned about home economics on a larger scale by .Imi-'s. Lang, Suvaprf-. Hunt. liaiiisey. Scarzino, KYright. visiting the food departments of the vari- ous Pittsburgh plants. The members of these organizations strove to achieve the right attitude towards the home and the community and thus be hetter able to take their places in the world as responsible homeniakers. li--xx l M:1ysti-'in-li. Membership was open to all students in the school who wished to join and who would give some of their spare time to performing the duties of library aides. Directing the activities of the club was Miss Harriet Hart. The group elect- ed four students to serve as officers. They were: president, Hazel Grossg vice- president, George Humelsineg secretary, Mary Hursh, and treasurer, Anna Marie Carroll. Meetings were conducted for the purpose of acquainting the members with the various functions of the library. The chief duties of the organization were to arrange the books alphabetically, dust the furniture and the shelves, and cheek the books coming in and going out of the library. An all-school alumni social was heldg the proceeds from this dance went toward the buying of a gift that was presented to the school at the end of the term. The school feels indebted to the boys and girls of the Library Club who helped make the use of the library a pleasing and effortless one. Un hearing either one of these sen- tences being spoken you would probably be at a meeting of the lfrench Club or the Spanish Club. Both of these organiza- tions were formed to further the under- standing of their respective languages and to learn the customs and habits of the people. Singing such lfrench and Spanish songs as nl'il'L'I'C jacques" and "lil Rancho Grande" and discussing the people and their countries, held the inter- est of all. Not only were cultural meetings conducted but the members niet for the purpose of planning dances and earning money for their organizations. Mrs. Duncan, as adviser, generously gave her time aiding Leo Ifletcher and Lois Lauffer in their duties as president and secretary of the French Club. The Spanish Club chose jean W'alte1' and XXX-sley XYhitehead as their officers. .X Christmas party with entertainment and refreshments served as one of their social diversions. The main attraction of the party was the breaking of the "pinata" which is a bag suspended from the ceiling containing many gifts. These gifts are scattered in all directions when the "pinata" is broken, producing fun and frolic for all involved. An all-Spanish dinner was planned featuring such appe- tizing dishes as sombrero salad and "liordo's" beans. Mexican nuts made by 'lean XYalter were the hit of the evening. During these activities, Miss Marion Siegel acted as supervisor. liy upholding the standards of these organizations and thus deriving profit from them, the nieinbers felt that they were furthering international understand- ing and friendship. That was the members of the Camera Club at spots around school. This year the club was quite a large and successful organization eapably advised by Mr. Paul Snyder. The duty of leading the club went to Art l.entz, presidentg Velma Kunkle, vice- president, and Bob Evans, secretary. Monday night after school was selected for meetings. The members were asked to pay monthly dues to cover the expense of the chemicals used in developing their films. Another night was set aside for developing and printing pictures which were taken during the week. Some of these pictures were used in the issues of Hi-Lites and still others were used in this Yearbook. An adjustment tank and a dryer were bought to add to the ever increasing amount of equipment. Velma Kunkle, one of the very active members of the club, constructed a printing box, which was made available to all the club mem- bers and was found to be of much use. Now, let us take a glimpse of the social life of the Camera Club. The members successfully sponsored several parties, and they also held a dance in the high school which proved a big success. So, after taking pictures, developing the negatives, and then printing them, the entire club agreed that the field of pho- tography is most fascinating. v Lewis.
