Some men skim along the Road as if it were a freeway, racing to each interchange for the sheer thrill of speed. The scenery whirls by like the images in a kaleidoscope. Only the Road is constant. Other men tread the Road with caution, anxiously studying the ground beneath. Un- aware of the course ahead, they painstakingly avoid sharp rocks and bits of broken glass. Wise men journey on the Road as if it were a country lane. They permit themselves pauses, but they do not linger overlong in the shade nor drag their feet through the dust. They have a destination. There is no map of the Road, nor can the gaze penetrate its tortuous route. We must determine our course by our ambition, the stars above our Road. Our ultimate success will be the measure of our progress in knowledge. To direct our footsteps and wisdom. To choose well a guiding star. To each man's pilgrimage on the Road of Life we dedicate this book. fx K3 --- w F-NKT5 NR F ,-..- Z ' 1' CR QM ...fm , Lt F f -e, 7-'11 rv,-. ll tl 0 ,ff ., ,X 3 9 fl if 9 llillll N Y f 7 A! if ' f ,Vik , . . l M, , f, 136 J-Egtnf' tryna? i a 11523. w e WX ' ,,, 7 QC -.un--un' V 'X-. fxqfdxj.. McLeod Principal During this year over one thousand seniors graduated from North Holly- wood High School. They are leaving us to travel on the Road of Life. It is our sincere hope that the years spent here have instilled in each of them the desire to follow through, and to work towards their individual goals. May their travels along the Road be marked by an inner satisfaction of work well done and be blessed with happiness and contentment. Before high school, many of you trav- eled the Road with little thought of destinations, but now you are beginning to determine goals. High school gives each of you the opportunity to explore many subject areas in your classes and many types of activities in your extra- curricular life. We hope that you will gain the experience and find the interest here which will make your journey on the Road of Life worthwhile to you and to those with whom you travel. 1 Boys, Vice Principal Frank Neugebauer ,.,...- . , IN 'mem ACTWN ,Nfl ' Theresa M. J inks Girls, Vice Principal The Road of Life would be very soli- tary were it not for friendship. Though some friends, Whom we encounter along the Way, accompany us only to a bend in the Road, there are others who travel the entire length with us. We can per- haps then do nothing which will be of greater lasting value than make close friends. It is my hope that each of you, here in high school, will experience the abiding satisfaction of sincere friend- ship. 'JZJVLZ5 Ly zfypgffv ,Iwi ,V f ,,,,, . , f, f 1 H g 4 pmy' I I , , f, ra Z4 . 5? As young people here travel daily on the road to maturity, they progress in knowledge and skills. They meet varied types of people, and they assume increasing social responsibilities. As guidance personnel We strive to help young travelers find their direction, resolve their uncertainties and seek re- alistic goals. x , . The seniors who graduated this year came to the first crossroad of adulthood. Each chose a fork in the Road. Some will continue their schooling: some will enter business. Only time will reveal the wisdom of their decision, but it is certain that the guidance and preparation they have received at North Hollywood High greatly enriched their judgment. As we change by our travels, so the Road itself is altered for our having passed. Our contribution to those who will follow may be a revolutionary idea, a new tradition, or simply a pleasant memory, but no one departs without leaving footprints. By their energetic leadership and enthusiastic loyalty, the Aikanians and Sesentians have bequeathed an en- riched heritage to all senior classes to follow. The Sesentians began their last Semester with a Senior Assembly, at which plans for their senior activities were revealed. Then a group of seniors presented a panel discussion for the new sophomores on Subjects such as interest clubs and merit standing. Shortly thereafter, volleyball teams representing the various senior problems classes were seen diligently practicing for the Round-Robin tournament held at noon. They also participated in the competition which highlighted the Senior Picnic. The picnic was held at the park at the conclusion of a parade in which each class carried out its original theme with outlandish costumes and skits. The days sped quickly by, and May 27 soon arrived. This was the night of the exciting Senior Prom called HSomewhere Over the Rainbow. The approach of graduation was finally realized as the Senior Concert followed closely on the heels of the Senior Banquet, where prizes were awarded for the most beautiful table decorations. After Graduation, June 16, the Sensational Sesentians gathered for Grad Nite at Ciro's to bid an eager but sentimental good-by to North Hollywood High School. Some of these trails are inviting but wander futilely away from the goals of life. Others are stony and unsheltered, but sometimes these climb to heights undreamed. It is the individual respon- sibility of each traveler to choose which course he Will follow. Friends, parents, and teachers can only en- courage the development of his mature judg- ment and foresightg experience can teach him to accept the responsibility for his actions. Stu- dent body government provides an excellent opportunity to gain this experience in making decisions and conscientiously translating them into actions. The goals in life are minor in relation to the spirit in which they are approached, and every honor is secondary to the manner in which it was obtained. On the Road there are laws passed by other travelers which compel obedience, but there are stricter rules which exist though the punishment for their violation is often less apparent. These are the standards which every traveler establishes for himself. Their preservation is vital, for a success without the self-respect that they pro- tect is hollow. In sports the upholding of these principles is called sportsmanship. Good sportsmanship in life, as in athletics, makes participation re- warding and enjoyable. - Mig, 1' '-v I 25 -I - , 1 J Y 4 V ' wx y ,. ' I J I -V ' . V' Ni N I- T FH! He is a three year letterman in Cross Country and a one year letter- man in Track. To Francis Fauchy Smith. outstanding coach and Co-ordinator of Athletics at North Hollywood High School, the Sports section of the 1960 PII Camino is proudly dedicated. Mr. Smith came to North Hollywood in ISVZH. Football and basketball were his main interests. He produced many championship teams as well as top individual stars in both fields. He retired from active coaching in 1949. All of North Hollywood was shocked at his death. Coach Smith's firm principles and policies will always remain a part of our school. During April, the Youth Tennis Association, headed by Reese Tay- lor, announced that it would finance a special tennis film to be produced by Coach Xanthos. The film will be the culmin- ation of two years of research. Its purpose will be to dem- onstrate new methods of teaching tennis to large groups of students. A preliminary film was approved by the Physical Education Department of Los Angeles secondary schools. Several of the big names in tennis have commended Coach Xanthos on his new and original ideas. Much of the film will be shot on the North Hollywood campus with our tennis players participating. Coach Xanthos, a graduate of Occidental and USC, has taught at Bingville for thirteen years. His Racketmen have captured eleven Valley championships. Mr. Xanthos has produced a number of outstanding tennis players including Howard Lee of USC and All American Dale Rowland. Paul Xanthos believes that tennis is one of the finest sports a young person can learn because it is one in which an in- dividual may continue to participate actively for many of his future years.
