At the same time, the book El Camino is a record of the lives of North Holly- wood High School students as they carry on their many activities from day to day. What better theme, for these students who travel The Road to the future where they will spend the remainder of their lives, than Footsteps to the Future ? In this, El Camino for l957, the staff has attempted to interpret the footsteps of all Huskies as they have lived them. Your El Camino will re- main the clearest record of your high school footsteps after even the paths which you traveled have been oblit- erated. ix k.' 570 GL ,Mal LW! fl M4ou9 by-,ws Mmitmw ,LL mmm- P UMWQ QJMWW . sdnfcqfvwufff' I' Zyl A , : it- ' Q- y H g if A ll -,J iw 5 ,jf . 7221 Ui if ln 'f X Q a ' f' 1 y yt 1 f , : i f if H ' ', ff 'lf Zflff y 2 if W V1 , ' y I I f H wt f......,:a... In this way, each and every student appears somewhere in his yearbook, and the indistinguishable tiny heads of past thousand-student pictures have been eliminated. The underclassmen are coming into their own in student government and school affairs as well, and the lower class presidents retained their seats on the Student Council during the semesters of 1957. The lower classes held their own social events, as well as boasting their own service clubs. NORTH HOLLYWOOD versus BURROUGHS Again the Huskies started their season in a practice game with the Burroughs Indians, but, unlike last sea- son, the Indians fielded a good team and made it a rip- snorting game. A 48-yard pass to Jim Krueger set up the first Huskie score. With Jim Maas scoring from the six and Ron Bellis conversion, the Huskies were aheadf Burroughs rallied to tie the Huskies 7-7. The third quarter saw both the Huskies and the ln- dians score. Jim Maas went over from five yards out following a 27 yard run by Mark Millard. The Bur- roughs team bounced back as Bud Gaither outran the Huskie defense to score. The fourth quarter went score- less and closed on a sad l3-13 deadlock. Doug Greene, Jim Maas, Ron Seibert, Jerry Steele, NORTH HOLLYWOOD versus FREMONT Fighting mad following their tie with Burroughs, North Hollywood's Huskies took to the gridiron on our own Sandifur Field, and, in the hot sun, annihilated Fremont's Pathfinders. Pete Holt took the opening kick-off to the 26 as North Hollywood early showed its power. Ron Fritch scored the TD on a 30 yard pass play from Jerry Steele. The extra point was wide. Also in the first quarter, I ack Mun- ari scored on a 20 yard run. After a long series of downs in the second quarter, Ronnie Brand went over to make it 20-O at the half. Following a 60 yard TD run by Pete Holt, which was called back, the Huskies scored on a one-yard plunge by John Hadraba. The Huskies stayed right in the game all the way and at the half trailed only 10-7. North Hollywood gathered power and gained a lead following a TD and a safety. CThe game was a high school oddity with every scoring method used: TD, safety, and an L.A. field goalj. Late in the fourth quarter, leading l5-10, the Huskies were stopped on a drive and were forced to puntg an L.A. lineman picked it up and ran for a TD. Playing its second league game at Van Nuys, North Hollywood suffered its second and worst defeat ever by a Wolf team. The only consolation that the Huskies re- ceived was that they stopped All-City back, Jerry Mollett. North Hollywood scored only when second-string quarter-back John Alsup threw a 32 yard pass to end Ron Fritch. The Huskie team left the field pasted 46-7 by Van NORTH HOLLYWOOD versus CANOGA PARK The power to fight back when angered brought North Hollywood one of her finest victories of the season. Ca- noga Park was loaded with fine backfield talent and rated as a big threat in the Valley League. The Huskies really shined in this night game at Re- seda High. The first half saw Canoga leading 6-0 as both teams battled up and down the field. In the third quarter, Huskie Mark Millard completed a sustained drive by going over from the three. As was said at the beginning of the year, nothing short of the League crown could favorably fol- low last seasonis standing, when the Huskies took second place in the City's strongest league behind one of the best high school squads in California. No, in comparison the 1956 record is only fair, but, by itself, it still is an admirable standing for any year's results. Throughout the schedule, injuries handicapped the North Hollywood forces, and we can remember no power in czction. A lot can be said of the lettermen leaving this team. No one doubts the outstanding material that was evi- denced in the Huskie players. Although injuries hit them harder than any other Valley team's members, they con- stantly applied many abilities to bring home victory after victory. Jim Maas, Jerry Steele, Mark Millard, Ron Bell, Jim Krueger, John Hadraba, Ron Brand, Noel Van Ness, Doug Greene, Mel Manalis, Bryant Hanke, Harry Sykes, Vern Cleva, Tom Zinzer, and others will leave, but there are next year's players. They will bring home crowns for N contest in which the Huskies were at full strength. Walt Bever Back Rocky York Bock Bock Ronnie Bell North Hollywood to wear. Hit with injuries and a lack of good depth, they put on a creditable showing in each and every ball game. Facing Burroughs in the first game, the greenness of our team was soon discovered by the more experienced Indian team as they rolled up a 20-0 victory. The second practice game was against Fremont, and the machinery of a good team peaked out from a corner. The Bee's held down a strong Fremont team throughout the game. Final score: Fremont 13, North Hollywood 6. With victory almost in their hands, the Huskie Pups were turned back 6-0 by Los Angeles, thus ending our practice season with a 0-3 record. This win was only a sign of what was to come. In their second league encounter, the Bees, in retalia- tion for the Varsity beating, soundly whipped the Van Nuys Bees, 25-13. Against Canoga Park, North Hollywood continued its mastery of the gridirons in a tight 7-point victory. The Larry McKinley Glen Guernsey End Tackle final score was 14-7. Meeting the Birmingham Braves at Birmingham, the Huskie Bees lost their first league game to the eventual League Champs. North Hollywood was soundly stopped, 19-6.
