Columbus, Magellan, Balboa, Cook, Perry, and Byrd represent different periods in history, but they had one thing in common: a motive force which spurred them on. The urge to bring new lands, new riches, new knowledge into the possession of their countrymen made their lives epics of adventure and accomplishment. Today few areas of the globe remain un- charted. Yet the inner drive that drove men across alien seas in search of new lands still has o place in modern life. ln' science, art, government, and philosophy the questing spirit still prods us on to achievement. 5 c of N911 'ff Igzl Q F-'ss 99 ASSB S X N. ,H-.,,,,,..,,,,,, ,.,,4.i- QQ nminn 19g S X i kk X MMA? Our council consists of the various student body officers, including the President Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and an as- sortment of commissioners. New members are elected each semester. This year both the Fall and Spring coun- cils worked vigorously to arrange a lively program of extra-cirricular activities. They cooked up several informal dances, not forgetting to put on the 1951 version of the traditional Sadie Hawkins romp. As usual, on this occasion, it was the boys who had to wait to be asked. All boys belong, and all may vote for the League's These officials have been busy, busy, busy all year, lining up noon activities. As for instance, a noon volleyball league took shape, as did a noon basketball league. ln addition, Boys' League officers went to bat for lunch-time music, with the result that the administration gave the Radio Speech Class permission to present the daily record show. Able leadership was offered the League by the President for the Fall semester, Page Weddington, and the prexy for Spring, Chuck Vogel. mb Board Of Representatives Let's have a coke machine in every class-room, escalators in every building abolish schoolbooks! Once a month the Board of Representatives meets to consider suggestions made by stu- dents. Few if any are as impractical as those above, many have become realities. The board can't instigate activities - it can only make suggestions to the student council. Even so, it's had a hand in many of the year's most popular events. Among other things, the group has plugged noon dances. Several materialized. They were the real thing, complete with music by D'Vaughn Pershing and his band. In addi- tion, the Clean Campus program came in for some attention. Every second period class sends two representatives to the board. The Vice President of the student body presides over all meetings. Next year the workings of the outfit will be somewhat different. Up to now, each member came to the meetings armed with sug- gestions from the class he represented. But, there'll be some changes made. Hereafter, the group will work from an agenda prepared in advance. That way, points out sponsor Mr. Alexander, we can concentrate on the suggestions that have plenty of student backing. The individual members may have less opportunity 'to present their pet schemes. But, insists Mr. Alexander, we never have any trouble finding out what the kids want. Even using this new modus operandi, the board will have to go some to surpass this year's record of success. ki , 'S T'-W , 1 , fa A? fi ,-,-. h- 'll lf ll, ' I0 K t ll, X E it ws. N it xx . Most non-members are aware of its existance, but we aren't well up on its structure and activities. The group's membership is divided into two companies, each led by three cadet officers withe the assistance of cadet non-coms. The companies are broken down into platoons, and the platoons inst squads. The group boasts a five-man rifle team, which this year took part in two inter-collegiate shooting matches, one of which was national in scope. Also, the unit supplies a four-man color guard, in charge of displaying the flag. This year the local unit was on hand for two city-wide R.O.T.C. competitions, and appeared in several parades. And, of course, they made their usual good im- pression on the Defense Department inspectors when those gentlemen paid their annual visit. All in all, the R.O. deserves to be better known by our students. And these precocious young'uns really live up to it. Every member - barring the officers - gives up ten recreation periods or five noon periods out of every semester. These he dedicates to coaching fellow Huskies who are having trouble with one or more of their subiects. The members of the Society make themselves useful in other important ways. Every year the out- fit has presented some valuable book to the school library. This year the members decided to give a potted plant instead. The plant will be placed near the entrance into the main building. Once a year the Society holds a meeting which any interested Huskie can attend. Often the group presents a talent show, iust to prove that scholarly folks can have varied interests and abilities. Or, they may hold a debate. This semester the group held a verbal iousting match on the scorching Mac- Arthur controversy. The Society traditionally winds up the year's ac- tivities with a banquet, to which alumnae of the organization are invited. All the many Chaldlerites who have benefitted from the existance of the Society can give thanks to Mrs. Rosen, whose energetic and able work as faculty sponsor keeps the group running. SPONSORS- MRS. Of course, the Boys' and Girls' Glee Clubs need no introduction, their activities are familiar to all. Without them there would be no operetta, no yearly Christmas program. And this fall's sparkling variety show, Club Paradise, would never have been presented. Less well known are two subordinate groups, the Treble Clef Society and the Chanters. Each is made up of talented beginners grooming themselves for Glee Club. They're kept pretty busy. .,,,,,v,7,,.,W. ,, ,, . Both groups took part in the Christmas program. Treble Clet girls serve as usherettes at every musical show held on campus, In addi- tion, they've entertained at P.T.A. meetings and Open House. P.S. We musn't forget to salute the faculty members in charge of putting the l.ids through their paces. Miss Hughey, Mr. Rossi, and Mr. Harry all deserve far more praise than we have room to give them. Qi' 1 CHANTERS S'5l 2 O rchestra Students waiting in the hashline at noon find themselves regailed with music out of nowhere. Nowhere in this case is the nearby orchestra bungalow. And the entertainment is pretty high class. Our orchestra was one of only two high school aggregations to win a first division rating at the all-city competition in March. The next step was the all-state contest in Fullerton. Mr. Di Saro's magnificently-trained group plucked themselves a second division rating. Despite their recognized excellence, however, these melodious kids have ap- peared rarely before the student body. They gave one concert at a special assembly in May. Later that same month they backed up the warblers at several performances of the Spring operetta. On both occasions the players acquitted themselves admirably. Our only regret is that they did not appear more often. v 75 K 49 this in l Its r kept All 4 esco ing The lTiU5 iv 43- f. ill I ,A , i if is tl sl ! N BAN Lots of glory and ol collection of sore feet . . . that's the net profit amassed this year by North Hollywood High's band. Mr. Di Sarro's brass brigade has been in the public eye of late-very popular and very busy. This year marked the aggregation's first appearance in the Santa Claus parade. Its music hos always been first-rate, but in previous years lack of attractive uniforms kept our crew out of the pre-Christmas doin's. In 1950 that situation was remedied. All decked out in their new blue and grey outfits, our band made an impressive escort for Saint Nick. The band was on hand for several other civic events, includ- ing the American Legion Parade and the Armistice Day parade. Also, they played at the Milk Bowl game. All these excursions didn't keep the group from providing rousing background music for all the Huskies' football games. You have to admire the kids' musicianship -and their energy. The navigator of an ocean-going vessel is charged with plotting the ship's course across the vast reaches of empty sea. His iob demands great training and skill, for he has little to go by but a few instruments and, overhead, a thoroughly confusing array of astral guideposts. Our counselors here at N.H.H.S. have a good deal in common with those mari- time wizards. They, too, must guide others to goals not yet in sight. They must help each student find the academic route he must follow to reach that distant place wherein his dreams become realities. Many years from now, those of us who will have achieved some measure of success may look on ourselves as self-made men and women. lf so, we will have made the mistake of forgetting the high school counselors who aimed us in the right direction. m ii- ,, ,gi is ,Q lllll-if I lsllllllxlw I l.lll, lll i i Aflhfitbx K ix Q I N X at i if I l l mia Whwm dMWW mmm mmm wMm www mmd MMM WNW M' x mullllii A xx X , 71-,V , , K , ,IM 1 Q 47 1 S ' f ,ff Q 1 f . f 35, , , , f, H gina - .-t-... -, ,..,v,, I+- 1 r, TL.
