In Brazil she enjoyed art, swimming all-year-round, and horseback riding. Arriving in Pittsburgh she found a new range of activities: AFS meetings, basketball games, ice-skating and sled-riding. Snow was a new and antastic experience for her. 'One morning I woke up at 6:00 and saw the snow outside my window. I was so excited that I ran outside in my niglltgown and began taking pictures. It was so cold!" She doesn't know w at it is like to have a brother. In Brazil she lives with her two sisters, Vicky and Rita, and her parents. Here in North Hills, she lives with the Rogers family - complete with three sisters. Miriam is seein new places, tasting strange food, and broadening her life with new Eiendships and experiences. On August 15, Ola Nordviste, our Norwegian exchange student, ar- rived in Pittsburgh in a new world of strange customs and habits. An obvious difference is in the size of the schools - Ola had only 600 - no crowded hallways. He found our many flavors of ice cream unu- sual, too, because he is accustomed to only vanilla and chocolate in Norway. Skiing is not only for relaxation in Norwayg Ola employs skiing as a means of transportation to school. In Norway, Ola lives in Oslo with his parents, brother Arne, sister Anne Christine. His Pitts- burgh family is the Heyls, who live in Highland Pines. Many foreign exchange students Hnd that adjusting to a new way of life is diflicult, yet Ola did adapt and participate in the activities of North Hills. For- tunately, he was able to play in a sport that was familiar to him - soccer. He was the main scorer for the Red Wave. Lockhart, William D. johnson, jr., Robert R. Corley. Sitting: Carl R. Beisecker, john A. Allen, Ir., Esther S, Hope, Secretary, Horace L. Bennett. Missing from Picture: Clarence W. Cummings, Howard E. Hood. - Raymond A. Peffer Arthur J. Hartman Mr. Hartman has served North Hills as Principal for twelve years. He not only has worked diligently in our school district, but also has served as President of the Sec- ondary School Principal's Association and of the Allegheny County Round Table. Mr. Hartman received a B.S. from Slippery Rock State College and M.Ed. from the Univer- sity of Pittsburgh. His devotion and understanding has led to the betterment of North Hills High School. During the eleven years he has been assistant principal, Mr. Peffer has worked tirelessly to better our school and has helped to give it the fine reputation it has. Mr. Peffer is well qualified for his job. He has received a B.S. and M.Ed. from the University of Pittsburgh. if james R. Harper Mr. Harper has served as Vice-Principal for only one full year and yet he has earned the respect of everyone as a fine administrator. He received a B.S. from Slippery Rock State College and M.Ed. from the University of Pitts- burgh. By successfully dealing with the problems of the school and with the tasks of his position, Mr. Harper has proved to be a generous and efficient administrator. I TERMEDIATE HICH SCHOOL DMI I TRATOR Vemon Metz Vernon Metz, the new Principal of the North Hills Intermediate High School, leaves behind him an impressive 30 year teaching career. His qualifi- cations include a B.A. from Capital University, a M.A. from the University of Pittsburgh, plus addi- tional training at Duquesne University and Came- gie-Mellon University. In thirty years, Mr. Metz has witnessed numerous changes at North Hills, and can now use this experience to advantage as Principal of the new Intermediate High School. Congratulations to Mr. Metz for a superb job! joseph K. Consolo The 1969-70 school session welcomed Mr. Con- solo back as the tenth grade principal. Since the split-sessions were instituted this year, he is in charge of the sophomores in the Intermediate School. Prior to being principal, Mr. Consolo taught in the Mathematics Department. He grad- uated from the University of Pittsburgh, where he received a B.S. and an M.Ed. North Hills can look forward to the helpful guidance of Mr, Con- solo for many years to come. Anthony Venditto Anthony Venditto, principal of the ninth grade, has come to us after years of a distinguished teaching career. An alumnus of Slippery Rock State College, class of 1954, he went on to the University of Pittsburgh to obtain a Masters de- gree. During the course of the 1968-1969 school year, he took over as Vice Principal of Ross junior High, filling the vacancy left by the previous ad- ministrator. A special favorite among students who had him as a teacher, this new position has not altered his image or his ability to understand the problems facing the typical and not so typical high school student. We hope that Mr. "V." and all his special qualities will stay with us indefi- nitely.
