C, ican Redheads Basketball Game was held in March of 1974. A sparse crowd came to view what had been deemed the battle of the sexes. At the start of the game, the coaches appeared somewhat embarrassed to be en- gaged in a contact sport with members of the opposite sex. The Redheads started the game with a light-hearted southern attitude. Their somewhat humorous antics disap- peared along with the coaches' embarrass- ment as the game approached the end. Per- haps the surprise of the evening came when the coaches pulled off a 89-88 victory. A game of twister??? Why don't you come over and see me sometime!

Mark Toma becomes one of the few players to reach first base. For the third time in the last four years, the Saxons found themselves at Anaheim Stadium competin for the C.l.F. championship. But unlike previous years, they would not leave feeling either the joys of victory or the disappoint- ment of defeat. The Saxons began their quest for their second C.I.F. championship by defeating Arcadia, 4 to 2. In the second game the Saxons found themselves on the top again by the same score against La Habra. North then traveled to Long Beach to meet and defeat Millikan byl the sur- prising score of 7 to 0. With Anaheim in sight, t e Saxons strugg ed past a young Eisenhower team in the semi- fina s, winning in extra innings, 8 to 4. Coach O'Brien and his Saxons had earned the right to face number one rated Lakewood in the finals at Anaheim Stadium. North started the game with Tim O'Neill on the mound, whose reliable pitching had brought the Saxons through the playoffs. The number one and two ranked teams battled for eleven exciting innings before C.l.F. rules halted play just before midnight. On june 8, 1974, the coaches, players and the fans once again came to find the C.l.F. Baseball Champions at U.S.C.'s Deaux field, and this time with a much brighter outcome for the Saxons. In the first inning, Tim O'Neill hit Ed Bowen across the plate for the game's only run. When the final out was recorded, Tim O'Neill had pitched a total of 18 scoreless innings against a previously undefeated Lakewood team. Once again, Coach O'Brien and the Saxon team had brought the trophy of the C.l.F. Baseball Champions to North High.
