The Alternative Program was based upon the idea that students work at different rates and learn best in specific surroundings. The program was flexible so that each student might arrange to have more time in 'certain subjects as needed and alloted less time to a subject learned quickly. Seminars were held frequently by speakers who came in to discuss topics ranging from the Middle East War to psychology. Learning contracts were used in which agreements between the student and the Subject Area Advisor were arranged. These contracts spelled out how the student would learn the material, grading, credit, and how the student would be tested. This system of education enabled students to work more independently and learn to be responsible for the way they used their own time.
