A Mingling of the East and West One of the newly formed clubs thiis year was thie Asian Cultural club — an organization not necessarily dedicated to tfie yellow move- ment but more to tfie investi- gation and enjoyment of the cul- tures of numerous Asian peoples. Sponsored by Mrs. Joan Korman. who taught oriental literature, this group of Saxons ventured into the mystery of the Far and Near East through various educational and fun-filled field trips to Asian- oriented places of interest. These in- cluded the Little Tokyo (or Jap- anese-town) and Chinatown sec- tions of Los Angeles, and a Bud- dist temple. Then, and only then shall ye have peace. This is the motto of the American Field Ser- vice club, headed by Mr. Ray Brown. Aside from encouraging international peace thru understanding, the AFS also sponsored this year ' s foreign exchange student Firdevsa Nevzat. They tried to help her see the USA and understand our culture better. The club also helped our own stu- dents abroad by preparing them for their journeys. Among the activities of this group were numerous potluck dinners held at NHS, SHS, WHS, and THS. Here, Firdevsa described her native Cyprus and former senior Deb Roberson related of her summer in Brazil.

Sharon Lee. Gwenn Ikeda. French Club Plans for European Tour Sponsored by Mrs. Gerry Rische. the French Club enjoyed another year of exciting activities, carried out in the viva la trance way. The list of activities began early m the fall with a club picnic held at Peck Park in San Pedro. Here, members enjoyed the pleasure of friends and a pot- luck lunch after a short car ride or a long, hard bike hike. December found les estudiants de francais ending the ' 72 year with a Christmas party. Other activities included a club banquet at a French restuarant, viewing French flicks, and an ICC Carnival booth for raisingfunds. Probably one of the most exciting moments for several Saxons will be when they board a plane and begin a three-week summer tour of West- ern Europe. This July, Mrs. Rische will be conducting a trip thru the countries of France. England, Italy, Switzerland, and Germany. France will be the real center of the trip with plans to spend several days each in Paris and on the French Riviera. Reading and discussing in French. Priscilla Sun aids in French. 83

Cartoonists Create There was a new club on the North High campus.— The Cartoonist Club. It consisted of sponser. Mr. Michael Bryan and 15 artistic Sax- ons. Although still in the planning stage, the club became involved in activities such as designing the sets for the Faculty Frolics and the publication of a biweekly magazine. This cartoon magazine attempted to promote interest in the fact that cartoons are humorous and are political statements as well as symbols of life. Cartoonists: Mr. Bryan. Maria Toron. Gary Barsley. Vic Ryan Art Club: Creativity Supreme This Year ' s Art Club, under the spon- sorship of Mr. Gary Parton, enjoyed a very busy year. To start off the 1972- 73 year, they held an Arts and Crafts Show, wnich gave the club ' s mem- bers an opportunity to show off their artistic abilities. Another club-spon- sored activity was the Saxon Renais- sance Faire. which was a revival of thegaity and pomp of the 1500 ' s. Field trips which the club took in- volved many excursions to various local sites to sketch and paint. In or- der to raise funds for all theses activ- ities, the members hoped to design and silk-screen posters for sale.
