Mighty Matmen of North Bay League Champs This year ' s Junior Varsity wrestling team was a young squad composed of one junior, twelve sophomores, and four freshmen. They began the year by capturing the 8 team Christmas Tournament at South High, and followed up with the championship of the Torrance 20 team Junior Varsity Tournament. Although the Varsity matmen often used members of the JV team to fill in for injured or sick wrestlers, the JV ' s still swept through the Bay League schedule undefeated to capture a co-championship title of the league. Among some of the most consistent performers this 1973 season were Joel Anderson. Mark Lowerison. Roy Morimoto. and Mitchell Taguchi. All these Saxons won at least one tournament championship. VARSITY WRESTLING: ROW 1 : Dave Atkins, Herbie Kaichi, Ron Kaichi, Joe Rodriguez. Glen Vierra. Mel Mitchell, Coach Bob Janko. ROW 2: Kevin Kamemoto, Ray Segarra, Dave Lowerison, Kohei Kikuchi, Rex Gotheride, Tod Jacobson. Dan Dunifer. Varsity Wrestlers Place Second in Bay League North ' s young varsity wrestling team was led by super-sophomore Herbie Kaichi (28-6) through a rebuilding year. Herbie won the Pacifica Tourney, took second in the Mira Costa Tourney, third in the Five Counties Tourney, first in the Bay League, first in the C.I.F. Sectional Tourney at Simi Valley, and fourth in the C.I.F. Finals to qualify for the first state meet ever to be held. He also was se- lected to the first all-South Bay wrestling squad. Taking an over-all look at the Saxon varsity grapplers, the team fought a tough season trying to defend their league championship. They ended up with a second place in the Bay League this year. Success for Frosh Soph Matmen The Frosh-Soph wrestlers started the season with a bang by winning 8 ot the 13 championships at the Bay League Novice Tournament, and then running away with the team championship. They followed up With a 2nd place finish in the 18 team El Camino Frosh-Soph Tournament, a 3-1 league record, and a 2nd place finish in the Bay League Tournament. Roger Davis. Jim Graves. Paul Reis. Dave Rodriguez, and Paul Saito won individual championships in the league tournament, while Dave Cohen. Pete Foster. Bob Motz, Bernie Schafer. John Sesto, Mark Takeya- ma, J. Davis, and D. Rodriguez captured Novice Tour- nament titles. This year ' s frosh-soph ' s were coached by Mr. Bob Quarry. Never can tell who ' s on top!! 56 Varsity helps Frosh-Soph do their thing.
