Debate Squad Gains Experience in Argumentation The North High debate squad had a difficult but prof- itable year. It was difficult due to the fact that nearly the entire varsity team graduated last year. It was prof- itable, however, since our many Novice teams gained experience by attending tournaments throughout the year. The year began with a Novice tournament held at North. North also sent teams to two Varsity tournaments. In- vitational tournaments were held at Torrance High, Mira Costa High School, and La Mirada High School. In order to qualify for the State Speech Tournament, one either had to win the U.C.L.A. Tournament, or the San Fernando Valley State University Tournament. This was the first year for Mr. John Reynolds as Debate coach, and he said he was looking forward to more suc- cess in the future. And in conclusion WM BMM A convincing Risa Lozer. ROW 1: Wayne Matoba. Robert Ward. Dan Beach. Ray Futterer. Jim Mayberry. Mayberry. Mike Malm. Wayne Hokama. Rick Myers 43

Student Council at Work -fc- ) The 1972-1973 Student Council was a coalition of new members with fresh, new ideas. Under the sponsorship of Miss Montgomery and A.S.B. President Edith Bergay. the council worked toward establishing better communica- tions with the student body. Suggestions from the sug- gestion box aided the council m pursuing actions that Sax- ons wanted. Among the councils many activities were the Welcome Back Dance. Homecoming 1972, Basketball Royalty, and student body elections. They also endeavored to improve the appearance of N.H.S. with a new marquee, and shrub- bery and spotlights. Planning the student body budget for the year and conducting a survey for W.A.S.C. (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) were also carried out. Probably one of the most welcome projects of the student council was the establishment of the new student center. Christy Gilstrap goes tinrough the books. FIrdevse helps arrange the c.jlendar Sue Ahlfs types the daily minutes. Sometimes Council is fun!! Helene Berk cfiecks the files. 45
