Debate Squad Gains Experience in Argumentation The North High debate squad had a difficult but prof- itable year. It was difficult due to the fact that nearly the entire varsity team graduated last year. It was prof- itable, however, since our many Novice teams gained experience by attending tournaments throughout the year. The year began with a Novice tournament held at North. North also sent teams to two Varsity tournaments. In- vitational tournaments were held at Torrance High, Mira Costa High School, and La Mirada High School. In order to qualify for the State Speech Tournament, one either had to win the U.C.L.A. Tournament, or the San Fernando Valley State University Tournament. This was the first year for Mr. John Reynolds as Debate coach, and he said he was looking forward to more suc- cess in the future. And in conclusion WM BMM A convincing Risa Lozer. ROW 1: Wayne Matoba. Robert Ward. Dan Beach. Ray Futterer. Jim Mayberry. Mayberry. Mike Malm. Wayne Hokama. Rick Myers 43

Firdevse shows her sunny smile. Firdevse listens intently to Mrs. Fabreque. Firdevse Nevzat — Sunny Cyprus at NHS 42 This year, a new and pretty face was seen smiling on campus — that of Firdevse Nevzat, the AFS Foreign Ex- change Student at North High. Firdevse, born in Limassol on the Mediterranean Island of Cyprus, lives there with her parents, 3 sisters and younger brother. Arriving in Torrance, 16-year-old Firdevse was greeted warmly by her American family — Mr. and Mrs. Struckman and their children— Kathy, Bryn, Elyse, Jeff, and pet dach- shund. Tula. Like most other AFS students to NHS, Firdevse enjoyed such activities as Disneyland, Sea World and sunning her- self at local beaches. Firdevse ' s school activities included the French and AFS clubs, serving on Student Council (in Cyprus, students do not have the priviledge of having a student government), and one of her most exciting mo- ments was participating in the Homecoming Ceremonies as the 1972 Honorary Princess. Asked to make any com- ments, Firdevse stated, I like the U.S.A. because the people are so friendly. I also like the boys here.
