B P E ff Athletics Developes Both Minds and Bodies Headed by Mr. Russ Bierley. the Health and Driver Instruction Department strives to teach students the rules of the road and basics in first-aid. This year the program continued to run as usual, mak- ing use of the DOT ' s, and demonstrations and speakers from the California Highway Patrol and Fire Department. The Athletics Department attempts to provide a wide spectrum of athletic competition for boys of all ages and sizes , comm.ented department head Mr. Robert Janko. Typing Mr. William Haase Long Beach State M.A. Typing, Business Education New Ideas Added to Prepare Saxons Ms. Gail Hart Shorthand, Research Paper Headed by Miss Dorothy Addleman, the NHS Busi- ness Department hoped to give students vocational skills for their personal uses and also to better prepare them for finding jobs in the outside world. To help accomplish this goal, several electric type- writers, dictaphones, an electric calculator and a new steno lab were acquired. In addition, a new Ex- ploratory Work Experience program was added to the curriculum. Headed by Mr. Haase, this program enabled students to receive training and school credit at the same time. P.E. Staff Stressed Individual Skills The Boys ' Physical Education Department en- joyed the healthful benefits of several new ac- tivities including bike rides to beach and spe- cial golfing outings. Our goal is to help the boys learn athletic skills and to improve their physical well-being , commented BPE head, Mr. Everley. Although the purpose is much the same as their male counterparts, Girls ' RE also strives for grace and developing leisure-time skills.
