Science Dept. Changed With the Times We attempt to educate students so that they can understand the technical world and the implica- tions science has today, com- mented department head Mr. Stan- ley Keller. Other goals in mind for the Science Department include to prepare college-bound students to be able to stay in college (since up to 50% drop out as freshmen) and to have the advance-place- ment students take biology, phys- iology, chemistry and physics over their four years at NHS. This year because of new discover- Mr. James Elsten Long Beach State BS Biology Mr. Robert Griffin U.S.C-.M.A. Life Science les. the department underwent some significant changes. The electron cell was heavily stressed as many college tests cover it extensively, and the lab and eco- logical approaches received much emphasis. Teachers felt there was a greater need for conservation and understanding of biological interrelationships. Also, as a re- sult of recent archeological finds by scientist Dr. Leakey, the Earth Before Man and Evolution and Man courses, had to be changed in their approaches and obtain more current materials. The 1972-73 year also saw Saxon students learning and observing out of class as well as in. The physics and biology classes en- joyed several educational trips to the Los Angeles County Museum of Science and Industry. Mr. Wal- ter Hillier ' s Earth Science classes journeyed to the La Brea Tar Pits and the biology classes visited the Cabrillo Beach Museum and its nearby tidepools. Career Education To develop in each student a measure of industrial skill, to discover and de- velop creative technical talents, and to develop problem-solving skills relating to materials and processes are just a few of the goals held by the Industrial Arts Department. Proud of their program and their view that trade schools are just as important as the academic colleges , this staff headed by Mr. Jerry Barshay strove to offer opportunities for exploratory experiences in individual fields, which were helpful in the choice of a vocation, and oppor- tunities for instruction in leisure-time activities and home repair. Like any other department, changes in the curriculum were made to account for new finds and rules, and the exploratory-work program was introduced. Studies on the new emision control devices were made by students in order for them to be able to pass the Class A Mechanics Test. Also, eight drafting students worked for experience at the Marietta Aluminum plant. Autoshop classes had the fun and learning benefit of visiting the General Motors Cor- poration later in the year.
