Strived Toward Cultural Understanding Communication, appreciation of foreign cultures, and an under- standing of the relationsfiip be- tween tfie English language and those of other lands are among the main goals of each of the for- eign language instructors. Headed by Mrs. Marguerite Landford, these 7 teachers strive to make Deutsch. Espanol, Francais and Latin more than iust a course. This year saw a few innovations within the department. Aside from the increased use of audio-visual aids, individualized instruction was put forth in Mrs. Paula Graham- er ' s German 3 4 classes. Cultural experiences, in which students make and eat the foods of other lands, continued on successfully throughout the year. But probably the most exciting of all educational experiences in foreign language were the trips abroad. Trips to Europe were taken by Mrs. Graham- er and Mrs. Gerry Rische and their students. These teachers hope to see these educational excursions as part of the curriculum where students may earn units for them after passing a required exam after the journey. 124 Foreign language class is caught speaking the forbidden language - English.

The team teaching courses of General Math and Geometry successfully completed their 2nd year. These classes offered stu- dents the advantage of seeing two view points of the same subject and General Math students received more individual attention. During the year, math teachers worked on re-writing their course outlines in order to make them a- daptable to an independent studies or alternative program. NHS math scholars enjoyed a few activities organized by Mr. Gerald Smith. In October, Randy Mysliviec and Doug Tao took part in the Jr. Math Seminar in L.A. Larry Posner, Susan Tamura, Jan Togioka and Rick Oyler competed at the Pomona College Science-Math Day on No- vember 2.
