Relevance — The Key Goal in Social Studies In order to present a more relevant line of study in the social sciences, the North High Social Science Department has made many progressive and sig- nificant changes in the past few years. The 1972-73 year continued on suc- cessfully with its program of the required elective . Team teaching spread out through the department and now four instructors use this method in their United States History classes and others use it in their courses. Sem- inar meetings and an honors program, in which advanced students can par- ticipate in an accelerated program of social sciences, drew the interest of many Saxons. The department also carried out a type of public relations with various feeder elementary and middle schools, and sent instructors out to them to explain the programs at NHS and give individual counseling. Education was also handled outs ide of the classroom and students con- ducted several visitations to anthropology museums and government courts. Department head Mr. Dean Malmo hoped to see a greater use of audio- visual materials and the development of critical thinking in the students. Ms. Shirley Baltau U.S.C. Success in Team Teaching Leads to Expansion This year, 300 students had the privilege of having two teachers for the price of one as a result of social science team teaching. This fabulous deal was found in the World Cultures Discovery and U.S. History courses taught by the odd couples Mr. Essex and Mr. Tabing, Mr. Thomas and Mr. MacArthur, and Mr. Rose and Mr. Malmo. Although some may feel that the purpose of team teach- ing is to the benefit of the teacher (ie. making it easier to teach), it actually does more good to the student. This type of class encourages students to be taught by each other, to be self-disciplined, and to have experiences that will help them to be critical in their decision making. Sem- inars, role-playing, mini lectures, and simulations are regular activities that help achieve these goals. Mr. Malmo conducts a seminar.
