After hostess Jackie Reesman and host Mark Meyer crowned Karen and John Homecoming Queen and King, the Senior girls presented the traditional Senior Follies skit. The pa- rade followed, featuring the North High Band and Homecoming floats, including the lst place entry by the Choir. Saturday afternoon was high- lighted by a Student Council -- spon- sored picnic at Stone Park, a first at North. All who attended enjoyed the egg toss, the orange passing contest, and especially the Tug-of-War, which the Seniors won. The Saturday night dance finally arrived. Held at the Morningside College Commons, the dance featured Dark Horse. Parties and breakfasts completed an exciting week. fs 62' Q9 Fi , E :,, t, in QM ii 'T' Q? 3 S 'x "Qui nkfgafk., Q ra 1 , x ,J 1 si ,dl fx fr Y 4 A W' M WI EWES o WAS WON 2 ,., A it 2 kk Y . Most of our week-ends consist of at least one game, whether it be football or basket- ball. But where do North High stu- dents go after the game? Where do they spend the rest of their week- ends? The Polaris staff carefully in- vestigated these questions, and discov- ered the establishments pictured on these pages. We found students at hockey games, movie theatres, fast- food restaurants, and even a few bars. Of course, student populations at local bars and discos has decreased this year, due to rising of the drinking age from 18 to 19. It's unfortunate, but not the end of week-ends for NHS! During the school year, we saw an abundance of curly hair, not only on girls but also on guys. Cowboy hats were a big hit at games and other school functions. Four-wheel drive ve- hicles were the new thing for car own- ers. Girls showed up in boots or spiked heels with straight-leg jeans. Hiking boots were standard footwear for guys and girls alike. Vests were also worn by both. This year's fashions were definitely new and unique. DHYS GF CGNTEITIPLHTICJN Life isn't always fun, Occasionally we must be alone to sort things out, to have our ideas fall into place. School often requires a lot of work, and it often takes away precious time that could be used for more exciting things. But enduring those hard times makes us appreciate the good times even more. awaken, some place. no longer recognize anything, no longer understand anything. QHYS or TRQVEL. become one face, something strange. To yawn throughout a football game, To relearn to speak. To wish sometimes to leave, and then to stay. To laugh, to weep. To no longer know what one is doing here. To await a letter, arrange some photos. To learn to live again as a family. To search for someone to talk with, someone who understands, someone who wishes to listenA And then to remain silent. I no longer know why I am here. Time passes, and so much seems far and away. These were some of the thoughts of for- eign exchange student Anne-Lawrence Veyrine after coming to Sioux City from France. Anne spent her year here as a senior, and hoped to continue her travels after leaving. Vania Concha, a native ofChili came to North as a sophomore. She noted many interesting differences between schools in Chili and in the U.S. The school Vania attended in Chili had no study halls, and classes were not held when teachers were ill. The main difference she noticed was our abundance of ac- tivities, such as drill team, twirling, and cheerleading. She felt our culture was fairly easy to understand and enjoyed her visit here. gl 'rs .4 ' . L' .gk '- 7: f 'A ,mg ' Mi fi ra' ' . F29 . . ,gkig jf aa-- , Pene Nicholls, from Aus- tralia, got involved right away by becoming a member of North's drill team. Pene felt that the student body was very friendly and was im- pressed by our school spirit. She noted that we have more freedom in school than Australians, and enjoyed it thour- oughly. f six: Ll 24 Fflil V QNX ti!-4451 lg Lf DQQJV Russ Gesling, also from Australia, was a senior this year. He felt that our school was much more strict than theirs-school regulations and dress codes were very lenient at his college, which included grades ll and 12. He enjoyed playing tennis here, and found many activities and clubs to participate in during his stay. ' . Seniors chose the theme "Till We Meet Again" to set the mood. For many of the people who at- tended Prom, it was probably the last time to see other classmates. Valedictorians Dave Dykstra and Jeff Wensel led the graduates and also addressed the class with speeches, the invocation, and benediction. Members of the class looked on as each was presented a di- ploma by Dr. Richard Wagner, Presi- dent ofthe Sioux City Board of Educa- tion. Graduation concluded numerous hours of activities. As young people who entered the Auditorium as high school seniors emerged as high school graduates, the days of parting were also concluded. aim tffl LQAVQ X Wye X tU.,i1!d X jf! Not only are sports for the participants, but also for the spectators. Starting in the fall with football games, cross- country meets, volleyball games and girls swimming meets, peo- ple have many activities to at- tend. Continuing through the winter with basketball, boys swimming, and wrestling, stu- dents are able to attend at least one activity a week. Though the spring doesn't have the big events like football and basket- ball games, it does offer many opportunities to watch North Star's perform. Tennis, golf, and track involve many athletes that are often excellent in their field. During the summer, softball and baseball are the only sports, but these also are excellent pro- grams that often have outstand- ing performers. 3 E90-J X i A,, M Q Varsity Football 5 Receive Football Honors Although the Stars finished the season 3-6, 5 seniors received honors. The '78-'79 school year has finally passed. But where do I start? Remember . . . Remember . . . Remember . . . How about those toga parties, senior follies, sub-zero football games, Home- coming picnic and dance, before and after games and dances, kegs, spray painting the light box, the teacher-pa- trolled lunchroom, second period APE class, all the good times at McDonald's, last day of school, every Friday and Saturday night, Prom . . . This year's book attempts to recapture what soon will become the Gooo ol' Day's for many. I hope that within the pages of this year's Polaris you can re- member and possibly re-live, the many special moments of high school. I wfuld like to thank several special people, many not even on the Polaris staff, who put a lot of time and effort into publishing this book. Many thanks to: The advisors, Ms. Lanning and Mr. Burow, for their patience and cooperation. Mr. Jacobson at American Yearbook Company. Jerry Galas at the Chamber of Commerce for his cooperation with the Siouxperland logo. Mrs. Bev Hinds and Lynne Hinds for their special concern and help. And non-staff photographers Mark Shechet, D'Lisa McKenzie, Mr. Wigand, and Lynne Hinds, who donated many pictures. Working on the Polaris this year has been a real experience. I hope we have put together a book which holds memo- ries for everyone. Enjoy those memo- ries! Kelli Winegardner Editor
