The POLAR BEAR d| | H JUNE, 1943 North ' s Service Flag t i ★ ★★ ★★ ★ I A ■ ★ ★★★★ ★ ★★ ★ ★ ★ ★★★ ★★★ ★ ★★★★★★ ■ ft! ♦ ♦ • ♦♦+♦♦++++ ♦ ++ ★★★★★★ « «++ +« v VTE ar e assembled today to dedicate thifl lag to the W young men and women of North High who are in the service of our country. A few short months ago these boys and girls sat in our class rooms, roamed our halls, rooted for our team at our football games, and danced in our social hours. Now they are on far-flung battle fronts doing their part in the largest and bloodiest war ever waged. Fighting are these young soldiers, that you and I may continue to enjoy the four freedoms which our forefathers established for us, and for which the fathers of many of these boys have waged one war. To this end have they pledged their lives that our birthright shall not be destroyed, and that people of all nationalities, and of all countries shall enjoy this same security and freedom. The words that are spoken here this morning and the songs that are sung will die away into empty air, but the deeds of these gallant boys will endure till the sun grows cold. As you look at this beautiful flag this morning, you know that each star represents a man or woman who put aside all his dreams for his own future and signified his willingness to give his life, if need be, for the country he loves. While we dedicate this flag to our own fighting men, would it not be well to dedicate ourselves to unselfish, uncomplaining service here at home that our fighting men may find that we, too, have fought a good fight here on the home front and have kept the home fires burning that they may come home to a better people, more loyal to God, to home and to country than those from whom they marched away. Miss Nellie L Baldwin, North High teacher, wrote this Dedicatory speech. It was delivered by Bill Fulton, Student Council president, at the assembly for the Dedication of the North High Service Flag, May 11, 1943. Two

May the girls and boys of North look into the future with courage and determination. May the fogs of war, the selfishness of mankind, the temptations that beset your ways, not dim your vision nor lead you from your high iesolves. May God guide you and keep you always.
