Text from Pages 1 - 48 of the 1943 volume:

May the girls and boys of North look into the future with courage and determination. May the fogs of war, the selfishness of mankind, the temptations that beset your ways, not dim your vision nor lead you from your high iesolves. May God guide you and keep you always. The POLAR BEAR _d| | H JUNE, 1943 North ' s Service Flag t i ★ ★★ ★★ ★ I A ■ ★ ★★★★ ★ ★★ ★ ★ ★ ★★★ ★★★ ★ ★★★★★★ ■ ft! ♦ ♦ • ♦♦+♦♦++++ ♦ ++ ★★★★★★ « «++ +« v VTE ar e assembled today to dedicate thifl lag to the W young men and women of North High who are in the service of our country. A few short months ago these boys and girls sat in our class rooms, roamed our halls, rooted for our team at our football games, and danced in our social hours. Now they are on far-flung battle fronts doing their part in the largest and bloodiest war ever waged. Fighting are these young soldiers, that you and I may continue to enjoy the four freedoms which our forefathers established for us, and for which the fathers of many of these boys have waged one war. To this end have they pledged their lives that our birthright shall not be destroyed, and that people of all nationalities, and of all countries shall enjoy this same security and freedom. The words that are spoken here this morning and the songs that are sung will die away into empty air, but the deeds of these gallant boys will endure till the sun grows cold. As you look at this beautiful flag this morning, you know that each star represents a man or woman who put aside all his dreams for his own future and signified his willingness to give his life, if need be, for the country he loves. While we dedicate this flag to our own fighting men, would it not be well to dedicate ourselves to unselfish, uncomplaining service here at home that our fighting men may find that we, too, have fought a good fight here on the home front and have kept the home fires burning that they may come home to a better people, more loyal to God, to home and to country than those from whom they marched away. Miss Nellie L Baldwin, North High teacher, wrote this Dedicatory speech. It was delivered by Bill Fulton, Student Council president, at the assembly for the Dedication of the North High Service Flag, May 11, 1943. MARCELLA I GREENMAN JAMES WILLIAM Fourteen The POLAR BEAR d| |m JUNE, 1943 Class Poem By Bill Fulton To North High School this poem is dedicated. North High — daily scene of a hundred tran- sient joys and sorrows, pulsed to and fro by the very hrarts of her students. May her glorious spirit and her rink and Green remain jorcrer as a guiding light for countless young lives, seeking their place under the sun. Forth, once again, From thy majestic halls, Pours the future of the race. The hopes, the dreams Of future years Meet the present, face to face. Thirty years It hath been so, And nearly thirty more. So be it ' till Thy walls collapse, Decayed to the core. On we marchl Into all the sorrow, joy, And duty that is life. Our bearing ' s proud, Our shoulders straight, Our backs are strong and firm. Our hearts dictate Of future years With love and freedom rife. Short days ago We dreamed that life, And now — we shall affirm! We ' re on our way, What to assay And whither, we know not. But, come what may, The roughest day Shall punish us for naught, For with us still Abides thy thrill — Great lessons thou hast taught. As ev ' ry class has — in the past — Regretted to take leave, So say we, Farewell to thee, Upon commencement eve. Now, dear friend, we leave. But in our souls remain the subtle lessons, gathered in these three, shirrt years As we face the future — forget, ue will not. Internally in our hearts shall ahide loyalty, hope, and faith in our alma mater — for we conquer new worlds in the name of the Polar Bear. While the Reardons appeared to be hilariously eccentric, they were really quite normal. Mrs. Reardon, a confirmed social climber, invited Mrs. James Parker, wealthy mother of Sherwin Parker, to spend the weekend with her while Mr. Parker and Sherwin were on a business trip. Mrs. Reardon was determined that her daughter Marcia was to marry Sherwin. Nana Reardon, the wise cracking grandmother, was just as determined that Marcia would not marry Sher- win. With the help of Cousin Lily Reardon, Nana succeeded in getting rid of the Parkers and marrying Marcia off to the boy she really loved. The rest of the Reardon family and Essie, the colored maid, helped to make the whole story side-splittingly entertaining. The all-school play, a tradition in North High, is always well received, and this semester the play was considered by the audience to be one of the best. Con- gratulations are in order for the entire cast and those who worked behind the scenes. Thirty The POLAR BEAR [)| |m JUNE ' 1943 Sports Nancy Gilbride, Pat Knight Jim Lott Bob Sullivan M. A.
