The road seemed smooth to that tar distant land, Which we, in fancy. thought to see aglow. Small children then were we, who trusted tate ! To shield us from the buttets in our course 'Til we should reach the tog-embowered gate Called graduation, which we hoped to torce. I i i So on we trudged through many a tortuous mile, And found the road was rough with rocks, not paved: But some ltoo bad tor theml gave up the trial And backward turned, ere they had waved. l But onward, onward, up and to the task! Once more we walk through brown, then green terrain, One day in rain, the next in sun we bask. i The way is hard, but we don't mind the pain. But one more lap and we'll attain the gate. The tamous ivy-covered gate, where each ls welcomed and received in pompous stateg l-lard work and toil alone that gate can breach. l i lt looms before us huge and broad and high: We hasten with a power born ot awe: These words on the triumphal arch do lie, To triumph one must try-'tis nature's law. l Right glad are we our journey is complete, I 5 Yet sad at thought ot parting with each mate: But we must onward! many roads here meet: This is lite's crossroad-there's no time to prate.
