We graduates of North High will help make these things come true. After the Roaring 20's, the Terrible 30’s, the Frantic 40’s, and the Fabulous 50’s, we are ready for the first year of the Swinging 60’s. This yearbook is dedicated to the next ten years and is filled with memories from the kickoff year-1960. UMrttfjurtfj 60s 00 ftCa t fa t£e faitune . .. The Sixties mean increased enrollment and an expanded building for North High. City planning experts predict an enrollment of over 2400 students by 1963. By 1962 when it is hoped that the new additions will he completed, many new classrooms and science labs, a little theater, two gyms, expanded locker rooms and an entirely new music wing will have been added. Mr. Johnson and Mr. Dillner will continue their present responsibilities to the school and the community and yet must l e ready to guide the school toward a bigger and better North ... a “swinging” NHS. ittyccaye . . . In our modern civilization it has l)ccome increasingly important to communicate effectively. Growing world tensions make it important for Americans to l e able to sj)eak foreign languages well. English courses enrich the students’ lives by offering experiences in drama and speech. 0 The talented student has an opportunity to develop his ability through the arts program. North’s outstanding music and art departments provide the student with a sound background in these fields. He also can contribute much of his talent to school activities. A related arts program given to sophomores emphasizes d r a m a, music, and art appreciation. Socazi Studied North High School provides world history. United States history and modern problems to give the student an awareness of the past, the present and the future. World affairs gives students an opportunity to study the great issues of the day. Each year the business field claims many North graduates. North’s business department offers courses in typing, shorthand, machines, bookkeeping and business principles. ‘79Cat6e tatic Mathematics, always important to students entering college, became more important after Russia launched its Sputnik. The 1960’s will see math remain one of the top rated subjects in high school. North’s math department will continue to stress college math and also give a general math background to all students. Science . , , Science has become the very center of this new atomic world. Every advantage will l e given to the bright young student who shows interest and ability in any scientific field. Scholarships and grants will become increasingly available. North .High School, wishing to continue its high level of scholarship in all fields, is offering outstanding courses in biology, botany, physics and chemistry. 15 ‘ftywte Students who take home economics courses are preparing themselves for the role of a homemaker. The cooking student learns meal planning, nutrition and the buying of food. Sewing classes work with styles, patterns and materials. Home management is much easier for a student who has completed a home economics course. Many students plan on entering one of the various trades and becoming skilled carpenters, draftsmen, mechanics or metal workers. North has shops and equipment to give the student a good background for a future job. 'PAytlazi SttcicaUoK The physical education department offers general classes to all students to give them overall well being. They also give the student an opportunity to go on and specialize in one particular area such as tennis, golf or modern dance, for his own satisfaction. 17 Polarites looking for information on vocational planning or educational counseling may receive the help they need from the counselors. Joseph Anfinson. Lellwyn Anway, Glen Sonnenberg. and Viola Marti. Helpful books and pamphlets on colleges and careers can be found in their offices. ?tc€fi4ef 7e zc6e%. North's two librarians. Helen Ulvestad and Mclitta Tonn, help students find books that range from pleasure reading to research work. Probably the most-visited person at North is the nurse. Helen Dargay. Miss Dargay is on first-aid duty throughout the day. She arranges for sports physicals and supervises the hearing, eye and tuberculosis tests. Mrs. Mary Ellen Zens, North’s understanding visiting teacher, listens sympathetically to students w ith problems in the home. Zdac4Xia vzC The Council acts as an advisory board for Mr. Johnson and Mr. Dillncr. It discusses problems of the school. The members are Floyd Pearson. Mr. Johnson. John Jacobi, John Schneider. Ruth Person, Ruth Amundson. Carl Kroening. Viola Marti, and Edward Soltys. Mr. Dillner is not pictured. Among the varied duties of the office staff, Mrs. Hazel Corrigan. Mrs. Alice Allard. Mrs. Eleanore Miller, Mrs. Katherine Peterson, Mrs. Adelaide Anderson, and Lillian Lundlterg. are checking the records and requirements of students for graduation, keeping records for different organizations, keeping attendance records, and doing many other office jobs. But Homecoming consisted of more than just “Pomp and Circumstance.” Weeks before tlie scheduled celebration, committees of industrious North students lalx red over plans and solved the problems to make Homecoming a success. Queen Karen Anderson reigned in glory as the North team, cheered on by loyal Polars. scored a 21-0 victory over the Vocational squad. Many students returned that night for the dance to honor the beautiful queen. All these elements: the returning alumni, the royal court, the football victor)’, and the dance, served to make this Homecoming a memorable one. 28 29 KAY ARCHER CAROL ANDERSEN SANDRA PARSONS MELODY ROPPE 30 Her Royal Highness QUEEN KAREN ANDERSON “r Ond C MVl6 z td fiCay made a yreat day 0po£tfsic twucaC s4 utau tce4 50t 4 utivenA4suf, ?4 ue A toast to the fifty years gone by. Corky, playing football for the first time with the varsity team, broke his neck in the game against Southwest. At first it was feared that he would never walk again; but, both through faith in God and in himself, he now has progressed to the point of walking with a cane. On March 14, as Corky again walked through the halls of North, his classmates welcomed him back. 47 The Bands and Polarettes pay tribute to Corky. @CaicH4, t e 'Wto t mr k wanted to be the first to reach the moon and so did dear old mac they were all most amazed in fact they nearly died when they found out that mighty north had put them by the side Princess K. of the Milky Way. 'Chough their victories were fewr, the team put out a brilliant effort which was appreciated by all of the Polar fans. The nucleus of the squad was composed of twenty-six seniors which will leave a comparatively green team for the 1960 season. The captains of this year’s team were Henry Antila and Gary Holman (pictured below). Through the 1959 season, many ups and downs were in store for the team, student body, and faculty. The boys started the year with a defeat at the hands of the Washburn team under the Parade Stadium lights. The second game was dropped to the Roosevelt squad by the score of 19-7. The third contest of the season found South forfeiting the game to North. During the middle of the season. North traveled to Marshall High for their Homecoming. The North squad put up an excellent fight, but the Cardinals triumphed over the Polars. North received a great blow as their center linebacker, Corky Roehl. was seriously injured during the game at Southwest. This game, the first of his high school career, drew to a close all too soon to suit him. Paralyzed from the waist down. Corky spent months in the hospital recovering from the serious spinal injury he sustained. Because of Corky's injury, the team tried to rally, but it was too late in the game, and Southwest was victorious. The next game was our Homecoming game against Vocational. Our beautiful queen, Karen Anderson, watched proudly as the Vocational squad was brought to its knees by the superior Polars. Edison was victor over North at the next game. The weather was damp and dreary, but the spirits of both schools were undaunted. More unseasonable weather greeted the team and fans as the last game of the season was played at West. Our team made a great attempt, but was topped by the West squad. 107 26 Se tcon4, 7ea t A A John Henderson JA AKtk Cary Holman Bryan Bartness Gary Hall Jim Gilbertson Shcl Schrciberg Dick Johnson Of' Julian Goldberg FRONT ROW: Jim Lcnhart. So many seniors signed up for committees that the class officers had a hard time deciding who would do what. These groups worked industriously to make all of the class activities run smoothly and successfully. One of the first committees to get under way was the election committee which took charge of choosing the class officers. Throughout the year, the budget and social committees handled many of the class responsibilities. For many days before the class play, ambitious ticket committee members climbed the ladder from the boys gym to sell class play tickets to Polarites. Later the banquet, prom, and picnic committees got organized and made the plans for those exciting events. Finally, graduation time rolled around and the class song, dedication day. cap and gown, class memorial, and commencement committees all had a part in making it a fitting climax to a wonderful senior year. Who realized that the cast had been rehearsing until six o’clock every night for the last two weeks? No one noticed who had volunteered for the varitfus committees, but without these people, there would have been no scenery, no make-up, no costumes, almost no play at all. Another round of applause was earned by Mr. Flovd Pearson, who had the tremendous task of guiding and directing these budding actors. Floyd H. Pearson Horace Vandergelder Larry Gruman . We’ll be leaving you and all these old familiar places. Each memory that time retraces will be true. To the future we will part, yet living in our hearts.
