The 1968 North High gridders posted a 1-8 season under head coach Roger Hendrix and his competent staff of Jim Kloman and newcomers Terry Black, Paul Caldwell, and Ted Rose. Mike Renneker and Mike Black, although not members of the faculty, were a great asset to the team. The Polar Bear's lon victory came over defending city champs, Walnut Ridge, as a result of an early safety and a last minute touchdown. Due to poor turnout at summer practice sessions, North entered the season unexperienced and under-manned. lniuries also plagued the team as sev- eral of the few returning lettermen missed action at the first game. These factors influenced a poor record, but spirit and moral of both students and team members were high. Several of North's outstanding players included special- award winners. Mike Hittle received the most valuable player award while Rex Lower, Jack Smelker were named the most improved players. Jack Smelker and Mike Bankes were the recipients of the coaches' award. Other honors were given to Mike Hittle, Cecil Beasley, Larry Walker, and Rex Lower as they received recognition in the city league. Reserves-Row 1: C. Bridges, P. Pyle, K. Rease, G. Fox, G. Gwynn, C.
