To us it stands for twelve of the best, most com- plete and enjoyable years of our lives. Around it centered all our interests from the time we irst shyly entered the door to the time when we left, no longer members. We stand here for the last time, alone, to say good-bye. We hear the poplars rustling their farewell to us, and their mur- murings bring back such a flood of memories and recollections that we cannot say good-bye, but say instead-this will always be our school. They sponsored several school parties and pro- grams. They were very active in forensic Work, especially in declama- tory and debate. Their issue of the Torch was a success. The Junior Class also started the school annual. The wishes of the class have at last been answered and now an annual will be a yearly product of the school. Many members of both the annual and the paper staffs were Juniors. Page Eight l l , - Top Row--P. Lange, R, Dickie, Wood, Ziemke. H. Dickie, F, Radies. Schmidt Bolton: Rott'-Plon. 'i O Basketball HOUGH the season was not a rousing success from the standpoint of games won and lost, the Orange and Black quintet was a fast playing team. The team was weak in offensive power, but made up for this with a good defense. Lack in weight and experience cost the squad some games. As the whole squad is made up of underclassmen, the team next year will be a strong one. The games lost by a large margin were with Lodi. Lime Ridge, Baraboo Presbyterians and Reedsburg. The teams were better, larger and played a better brand of basketball. Our team tried their best to win but the obstacles were too great. The games with Merrimac and the Baraboo Y. M. C. A. were close games. although North Freedom was beaten in both. The game with the Baraboo Y. M. C. A. ended in a tie and Baraboo won in the overtime. The games with La Valle were the only games won by the team this year, and they were won by a large margin. Captain Schara was the outstanding player of the year with Schmidt and Griep running a close race. Ristau was out for part of the season with injuries. but was a valuable forward. Petzke, Johnson, Lange and Schara will make a real scoring machine in their next season's play. Buxton is the only regular to graduate. John played some good games during the year, though he was weak in scoring strength. lt is hoped that next year a league may be organized so that the team can compete for group honors. Where gloom prevailed at the beginning of this year, joy will be prevalent next. The experience needed was gained this year. Those who played as regulars were: Walter Schara, C. Ristau. W. Schmidt, R. Ciriep, Petzke, Buxton and Johnson. Page Twelve Top Row-E. Schara. Johnson, Sathcr, Petzke. P. Lange Bottom Row-Schmidt. Buxton. W. Sahara, Gricp, Ristau Track I-IE North Freedom track team made quite a good showing this year. Their coach, Mr. Sather, tried various ways to encourage his track men, the most successful being the idea of presenting a silver cup, with gold lined center, to the best all-round athlete. During April, the track coach aroused much enthusiasm among the boys in high school by showing them the cup. The outstanding feature about the contest was that it was to be a handicap contest. The best athlete in school would then have no more chance of winning the cup than any of the poorer athletes. The boys did their best to win the cup and in that way the coach could choose the person who did best in that event. The events were: Run- ning and standing broad jump, shot put, discus, high jump, pole vault and the 100, 220, 440 and 880 yard dashes. The track team made a fairly good showing at the track meet at Baraboo. One person could participate in three events, two field and one track, or two track and one freld. This ruling was rather hard for our team, as W. Schara is a good, all-round athlete and is good in all the events. Our track team can boast a good set of hurdlers, but as hurdling was not a feature in the track meet at Baraboo, the hurdlers could not help us win points. Page Thirteen Debate The biggest debate group in the history of the school reported at the call for debaters. After a short study of debate construction, some preliminary debates were held. One question was debated each week. At the end of the season an open debate was held. Capital punishment was the question debated. The side for abolition, consisting of Rita Griep, Dorothy Goodman and Ruth Dickie, won the decision two to one from Philipp Lange, Carl Ristau and Lawrence Ropers. No debates with other schools were held. It is hoped that some may be scheduled next year, Oratory Only three boys responded to the oratory try-outs. In the final contest Wilbur Schmidt won first with the oration, Tolerance and Progress. Philipp Lange won second and Erwin Schara, third. All the orations were very well given. Declamatory The usual strong interest was again shown in declamatory. Ten girls. representing every class in school, competed in the first contest. This was held during assembly period. From this group six contestants were picked to speak in the finals. At the final contest the following places were awarded: First, Josephine Draper-- Peter and the Angels. Second, Florence Ulrich- Over the Bannister. Third, Ruth Dickie--A'Buck. Other speakers, with their selections, were: Edith Holtz- Clanging Hours. Viola Hayes- Angel's Wickedness. Dorothy Curtis-'ADeath of Jean Valjeanf' The district contest was also held at North Freedom. As the annual went to press before this contest, the results are not here printed. The winners are to be sent to the contest at Whitewater. Page Fourteen lk 'Wig HBH Camp Fire Girls OFFICERS Presiden! ..., ...,..,.,.... To encourage the act as well as to gain a general practical ability in various crafts, she is given an honor bead for each well-done task or deed. The crafts are: Home craft, health craft, camp craft, hand craft and citizen craft. In addition to these, a local honor is awarded to each girl who performs some special service for her friends, parents or community. Each craft is represented by a wooden bead in symbolic color. The camp fire law is: Seek beauty, give service, pursue knowledge, be trustworthy, hold on to health, glorify work, and be happy. Meetings are held once a week at 3:30 in the camp fire room. The presi- dent takes charge of the meeting. Talks on health, beauty, friendship and other practical topics are given by the girls. All the money used by the camp fire girls is earned by them, either individually or as a group. Page Fifteen Top Rott'-V. Hayes. Schmidt, Rex Griep. Second Row- -Buxton. H. Dickie, l. Brooks. L. After one month of work a public concert was given. Several trips were made to the neighboring towns on Mr. Nealy's circuit, and. in turn, North Freedom was host to all the bands. When Mr. Schumann came here in the fall of last year, the band was placed under his direction. It has been busily practicing all winter and has made four public appearances-one at the Baptist Church and three at school. There are now twenty-five members in the band. Concerts will be given again this summer as soon as the weather permits. Page Sixfeerv Top Row-l. Brooks, J. Bauer, V. Hayes, R. Ciriep Middle Row-R, Dickie, H. Dickie, Warne, Wood. The sopranos were: Florence Ulrich, Mona Hewitt, Jessie Bauer, Augusta Bauer, Helen Dickie, Ruth Dickie, Anna Brooks, Irma Brooks, Lillian Chute, Burnita Cwiese, Dorothea Lange and Marion Wood, The altos: Doris Warne, Viola Hayes and Josephine Draper. Page Seventeen Page Eighlcen zizlzemory Y? WE PASS We pass, we pass, oh students dear- These halls of meditation. To seek our fate in life's grave paths In fear and consternation. 'Tis true we chide at times our lot And Iind things hard and weary. At night we tuck our books away And tread home, sad and dreary. But yet the joy-unequalled fun Cf coming and of going, Mixed with our choice acquaintanceships The seeds of mirth thus sowing. Till all the work and all the toil And dreary thoughts seem crass, And with a solemn, plaintive tone We say-we pass-we pass. -D G ON DEPARTING The time has come when we must leave Our high school days of fun and cheer: The day we'll see when we will grieve And wish that we were only here. We Seniors .eight have steps to climb Which call for efforts large and small: But if we had suflicient time, We're sure to win, and not to fall. lt's hard to leave the dear old school, The teachers and the students. too. But oh, how we did hate the rules That we obeyed till now, we're through. Although we often had a fight With Juniors or among ourselves, We've always tried to do the right, And 'tis with tears we say, Farewell -D. G. Page Nineteen ASHES The old trapper walked slowly toward his huge fireplace. The cold win- ter night made necessary a blazing fire. At last the coming of snow would drive him onto his trap line. It would, perhaps, be spring before he would again sit before this fire. On one side of the room lay his traps, all fixed and ready for the work ahead. His heavy clothes, and few they were, were packed in a small bundle. An array of knives and a battered rifle, his most precious treasure, completed the stock that would on the morrow be stowed away on the sled. But tonight the trapper walked with heavy tread. From off the mantle he took two objects. Both were small and from his extreme care for both they must have been delicate. He crouched before the fire and looked at the things he held in his massive hands. I-low minute they appeared: the one an old, faded daguerreotype of a young girl. Barely visible were the soft lips and the wide eyes. With even more tenderness the old man gazed at the other hand. There he held a small baby shoe. As he looked at it his lingers slowly tightened till it disappeared within his shaggy fist. ' A giant tear fell upon his knee. With a slight turn of his head the only movement, his eyes sought the dancing fire. The sharp crackling of the branches sounded loudly and harshly in the surrounding stillness. And then, lo, in the flames he saw the picture come to life. There with the child in her arms he saw his wife. Wide went his eyes and tense his muscles as he stared ahead, with a wild animal leap his arms sought the quivering figure. Into the very flames he leaped, one short wild cry escaped him. Ik lk lk lk ak Folks say he went insane or else a stroke had stopped his heart. Nor tears were shed nor none were wanted. They could not know for the fire had long been burned out and all the visions, hopes and fears were once more only ashes. Page Twenty i 4 FROM THE QUOTATIONS OF BILLY The bell rings the end of passing eve The guy who plows is coming from the field, The bellering cows run swiftly o'er the meadow And, by gosh, it's dark! My teacher says no poetry I know But she don't know the kind of a guy I be. I know more verse than all the guys around In fact, I'm good in poetry, So if you have some time List to this little rhyme. The guy who wrote it I don't know, But I think his name was Poe. In a little shell down by the ocean Was a girl called Annabel, see: But the boys around just called her 'Belle' Because she was so pretty. And here's another bit of rhyme From Stevenson this time. Under a sky that is starry Dig me a hole and let me be. I'm awfully glad that I'm dead, you see, Because I needed some castor oil. This be the lines you say for me, ' I'm glad he's dead like he ought to be The world is lucky and so is he For now he won't have to toil. Don't tell me, poets I can't quote: I know every line they ever wrote. -Wilbur Schmid YOUR GOAL Swing on, oh youth, this rough road o'er, Each milestone swiftly passing, The best of life and glory, and The finer things amassing. Set high your aim and firm your step Until the top you hold. Nor never cease, nor never rest, Until you reach your goal. Though it be small or it be great, It is not all the deed, But rather it's the way you do, It is your climbing speed. And when the gates of high success Before you do unroll: Then you can cease, then you can rest, For you have reached your goal. -Walte r Schara. t. Page Twenty-one THAT CONFOUNDED RAIN The rain is falling, hard and fast, . Of course, it wouldn't stop: It spoiled my plans much in the past, Will future also flop. I had a date for that big dance, And now I cannot go. It's even spoiled my every chance Of going to the show. The roads were fme until tonight. And now they're mud, knee-deep. When to the dance I'd love to go, I can but go to sleep. So here I go unto my rest And that confounded rain At least can't come my dreams to spoil, Across my window pane. --D. G. THE DUSK --and then at last there comes the dusk. All is once more quiet. Birds are still. Even motor cars seem to glide along more silently. One by one the children are called to their homes to sleep. Peace and sympathy seem to cast a dull golden glow. A slinking dog passed noiselessly. All at once from the village tower rang the curfew. For a brief minute the world is shattered by a colossal, majestic tolling. At the end of the tolling all seems more silent. The shadows now are black and sinister. A black night bird wings its way overhead. Then of a sudden the world is plunged in the inky blackness of night. The girls as well were not to be outdone by the boys in any part. The room was among the first to complete its work in reading circle. Many of the oflicers of the citizenship were from the Seventh and Eighth grade room. The grade took part in the operetta, Peter Rabbit. Spelling groups were made into leagues and a close race lasted for some time. The Seventh and Eighth grades. with the Ninth and Tenth, made up the Junior High School team. There are several promising players graduating into the high school this year. The room is living up in every respect to the high standard of graduates that it has sent into the high school in the past. Page Twenty - five Teacher, Miss Quam 'lop Row--Myer. The thrill of coming upstairs inspires the best of conduct and the Fifth and Sixth lived up to the highest expectations in every detail. This room was always among the leaders in attendance. This room has combined with Miss Caflisch's room in the forming of a junior citizenship club. The members of the room were in the operetta and in the programs given. The boys of the room were interested in athletics and were required to make a certain grade in scholarship before they were allowed to compete in sports. There was an intense rivalry between the groups in spelling and reading circle work. Miss Quam characterizes them as a very industrious group, Hlled with an amount of work, an amount of play, with the total effect a very high grade group. Page Twenty-six Teachers, Third and Fourth. Many novel ideas were used in getting the attention of the children. Indian villages, miniature forests, lakes, pictures and poems make a visit to either of the rooms very interesting to anyone. The First and Second grade, with the Third and the Fourth, took part in every all-school program. Combined with the two upper rooms the grades put on a very pleasing operetta. The grades have showed a lot of initiative and spirit in doing all things assigned to them. Some very excellent readers were developed in the lower grades.
