Marching Vikings prepare for participation in the Christmas Parade. Electives broaden our background Our school is often brightened by paintings and un- usual sculpture produced by our art classes. With the aid ot Miss Maddrey, the art teacher, students who choose this elective course are given an opportunity to experiment in many types ot art. Lettering and a knowledge ot perspective are some of the primary skills acquired by the students. More involved work follows, including painting, sculpture, and working with papier-mache. Under the direction of Mr. Carl Chiddister, our new music director, North's Music Department has expand- ed broadly this year. The student with an interest in musical instruments may have instruction in using his chosen instrument and become a member of North High School Band. The student who likes to sing may enroll in Chorus as an elected course. As a member of the Chorus, he takes part in group programs throughout the year. Es- pecially commended by the student body is the Christ- mas chapel program rendered by the Chorus. One of the most extensive programs at North Forsyth is our Language program which involves French, Latin, and Spanish. The French Department has grown rapidly this year to become the largest section of the Language Department. French students en- gage in first to third year classes. French grammar is most important to the beginning French student, but to the more experienced third year student, conversation and practi- cal use of the language are emphasized. All French pupils become well-informed in the intricacies of French customs and culture, The speech laboratory which has been newly installed this year is proving an invaluable and substantial help to the user. Latin is tar from being dead at North where many students study the Roman lang- uage with capable instructors. Early Roman life, culture, and history are also emphasized. The relationship between Latin and other world languages based upon it also proves interesting when studied by the Latin classes. For the student wishing still another choice, Spanish is popular. Spanish classes learn not only the language, but the cus- toms and cultures ot Spanish speaking peo- ples along with the government, geography, and economy of their countries. Interest in Spanish is stimulated by our ex- change system which sends two students from Bucaramanga to live tor two months in our community and attend our school. Mrs. Northrop incorporates tapes and an extensive vocabulary in teaching the French language, a' Miss Hannah explains a French assignment Mrs. Lazelle Northrop Miss Eloise Teague French II, Ill 5POniSt1 l, ll 29
