The story of the year THIS PLACE IS FULL OF WILLING PEOPLE SOME WILLING TO WORK AND THE REST WILLING TO LET THEM 2 Portrays personalities studying, working, playing, relaxing 3 4 5 6 w 7 8 f In appreciation of her capabilities as secretary, enthusiastic interest in s ports, friendly attitude toward both teachers and students, in¬ volvement in civic activities, and devotion to her family and church, we the Senior Class of 1968, with sincerity and pride, dedicate this edition of the Devils ' Diary to Mrs. Ailleen Speight Stewart, an alumna of North Edgecombe School. 9 Boys’ basketball 10 Eugene Larry Alvin Jerry Dan Ken 11 Girls’ basketball 12 Millie Becky Linda 13 N.E.’s junior varsity teams 14 15 Mrs. Ann Price Science Physical science is taught at the ninth grade level. All sophomores must take biology, a requirement for gradua¬ tion. Chemistry and physics are offered as an elective for upperclassmen. Those who are in the college pre¬ paratory group usually elect both courses. 16 Mathematics More than mere numbers, Mathematics integrates imagination with facts and provides knowledge to fulfill present needs as well as background material which will be valuable in future years. North Edgecombe requires two courses in mathematics for graduation. College preparatory students learn Algebra, Plane and Solid Geometry, and Trigonometry. Business and General mathematics courses are taught to prepare pupils for vocations. Seniors leam to use the Slide Rule Mrs. Lucile Anderson Mathematics Scale Drawing 17 Agriculture Much more is done in agriculture than just attending class. Students help with the planting and care of plot from which all kinds of plants are sold in the spring. Furniture is refinished. Many things are repaired or built for farmers in the area. Mr. Robert Chambliss--Teacher 18 Home economics This department has expanded this year to help the future husbands of the North Edgecombe school area- All of the boys in Thresholds to Adult Living have help cook and serve a meal. They have learned to wash dishes! Mrs. Frances Benson 19 Mrs. Sara Dupree Spanish--English Few people use Spanish in autograph books. How about it, Connie? Spanish Mastery of a foreign language is profitable in this age of jet travel which brings distant lands within reach in hours. Spanish is offered to all Juniors and Seniors if they are interested in it. Newly published textbooks, tapes, and records have been added to the department this year. Is this the " Santa " we know? Boys, Boys! How many points are you trying to get? 20 English In order to convey one ' s ideas to others, an ade¬ quate knowledge of English is necessary. Students develop constructive ideas and style by writing compositions, short stories, and poems. To encourage appreciation in foreign and American literature teachers require oral and written book reports of drama, fiction, and poetry. Miss Cynthia Shell English 21 Business Start! Typing, office practice, bookkeeping, and shorthand are the courses offered to prepare students for voca¬ tions in the business world. College preparatory students may elect typing. By doing work for the principal and faculty members, students receive valuable experience in secretarial practice. Mrs. Linda Raper Bus iness 22 Physical education Health and Physical Education is a major subject for all ninth grade students. An advanced course is offered as an elective to twelfth grade students. They are taught facts about body functions, anatomy, and personal hygiene. Special reports, charts, filmstrips, and pamphlets are used to supplement regular classroom lectures. Activities designed to promote physical fitness, are stressed including calisthenics, sports, and gymnastics. Mr. James Lamm T eacher--Coach 23 Social studies Historic events which have laid the foundation for present-day conditions are reviewed and discussed in Social Studies class. United States history acquaints students with the progress and achievements of their nation, while World History stresses ad¬ vancement of ancient and modern civilization. To prepare seniors for their roles as citizens, Economics and Sociology are offered as an elective. Many of the seniors this year are electing Civics, also. Mr. Lamm has a U. S. history this year. 24 Library Mrs. Gladys Avery Librarian aannml vn 25 Junior— “Singing in 26 Senior the rain” 27 Homecoming queen’s court Patricia Taylor Connie Burnette Lynn Worrell Barbara Taylor Scottie Brake Hope Whitehurst Sylvia Bradley 29 Beta club Marshals Joyce Hyde, Robert Rogister, Patricia Taylor, Larry Parker, Floyd Bland, Barbara Hyman, Eddie Cutchin, Patsy Brake--Chief. 30 i EE I Glee club Spanish club Miss Lillian How ell--Director 31 32 FHA Mrs. Benson—Advisor Tim and James-- " COOKS " Patricia Taylor--Pres.
