ALICE BOUSFIELD Last Thanksgiving, North Division lost from its faculty a very able, dynamic teacher of English when Alice Nyherg Bouslield retired to join her husband on their ranch in California. Mrs. Bousfield is a graduate and Phi Beta Kappa of Lawrence College. After her graduation, she entered the field of teaching the subject of English. Being no mean poetess herself, she often used verse to express her own emotions and idealsg and she most ably transferred to her students her love for fine poetry and literature at the same time she aimed to instill them with a love of beauty in all its forms. Through the years her energy went into many other activities. She helped to organize the school's Athletic Associationg she was for a time sponsor of the Webster Debating Society and of the Girls' Clubg she was chairman of the faculty flower fundg she was one of the faculty advisers of The North Star and of The Tattler, the school yearbook. She coached many plays and served on the National Honor Committee. In addition to her school activities, she was a member of the Shorewood Opera Chorus and the Shorewood Women's Chorus. Sensing her sympathetic spirit, troubled students often sought her out for help and inspiration. She often worked beyond her strength and might have said with Edna St. Vincent Millay, "M y candle burn! at both endif Il will not lar! the night,- But ala, my foef, and ob, my friendr, ll giver cl lovely light." May Mrs. Bousfield's retirement be blessed with good health and more leisure to enjoy the beautiful things of life. Dance Ensemble Director: Miss Heiden There are a number of activities around North Division, but among the artistic exhibif tions are the productions of the Dance Ensemf ble. This has been a big season for the Ensemf ble because it has made seven public appear' ances. The Ensemble's biggest audience this year saw the group appear on a television broad' cast in its presentation of the "Maintenances Dance." The biggest dance production of the year was "Come To The Fair" for the Variety Show. For the Student Councils Talent Show the Ensemble presented "Jive in the Classroom." When the school fair rolled around in March, the Ensemble had a booth called the "Magic Spot," where the plush poodles proved to be exceptionally popular prizes. Every year the dance groups from all the high schools come together to present examples of their work. This allows all the girls not only to do their best, but to see what is the best in the other schools. This meeting is called the Dance Symposium which is held at Wells Jun' ior High. This year the presentation, "Come 'To The Fair", with four guest members Qboysl-was the envy of the other "all-girl" groups. A special program at the Vocational School and the Inf terfHigh Youth Rally for Mental Health Week were also occasions for repeating "Come To The Fair." For North's big Pep Rally the Ensemble pref sented a series of football dances: "On Wisconf sin" and "Mr, Touchdown." Thus, it is plain to see why the Dance En' semble is one of the most active groups of North. Northsidos offense threatened time and time again, but just couldnt seem to push a touch' down across. Kings Hrst score was the result of a fourth down gamble by the Blue Devils that didn't pay off. 'The Generals' other score was set up when one of Harris' passes was intercepted in the flat and run back to the North 10fyard line in the last two minutes of the game. North 13 - Juneau 7 Wheat a game! For their second straight victory, North's touchdowns were scored on runs of 27 yards by Henry Sims and 31 yards by Randy Evans, around their own left end. Alvin Little scored the only touchdown of the game early in the second quarter on a Sfyard plunge over left tackle. The stalwart North defense repeatedly stopped Vv'ashington on its 143 Zf, and 1-yard lines. Late in the game Wztshiiigton was stopped only inches from a tying touchdown giving Northside a hardffought victory. The Blue Devils had been the Hrst to shut out the Purgolders in almost two decades. North 13 - West 26 The cold mud and the spirit on West's team again upset the favored Blue Devils 26 to 13 at North Stadium. West's quarterback, Don Svitak, scored two touchdowns on runs of 4 and 6 yards and passed 14 yards to end, Jim Cudy, for a third. West's last score came on a spectacular 6Ofyard run back of a kickoff at the beginning of the third quarter. The Blue Devils scored on a 27fyard pass, Ross to Sims. Ross scored on a lfyard sneak. North's final touchdown came on a 54fyard pitchout around left end by Roosevelt Harrell in the fourth quarter. North 6 - Pulaski 13 North's Blue Devils lost a close game, 13 to 6, to a heavy Pulaski team. The Ramblers scored with two minutes to the half on a 24-yard run by Krysiak. Northls tying touchdown came in the third quarter on a 1Ofyard pass, Ross to Harris. Gene Dickerson recovered a Kroll fumble on Pulaski's 27fyard line to set up the touchdown. The Ramblers marched 84 yards for the win' ning touchdown in the fourth quarter with Unger going over from the 12 on a quick opener over tackle. North 7 - East 13 Northside closed its 1957 football season by losing a close, hardffought battle to East's Tigers, I3 to 7. The Blue Devils scored first in the early minutes of the game on a 16fyard run by Randy Evans, after Al Reinhardt, North's center, recovered a fumbled punt by East's Dick Wilterdink. The Tigers tied the game up in the second quarter on a iifyard march with Spotfs 1-yard march. East's other score came in the fourth quarter after a 'iflfyard march with Dethloff going over from the 1. North was leading 14 to 2 at the end of the first quarter and 31 to 20 at the half. In the third quarter Lincoln took hold of itself and whittled the Blue Devils, lead until the score was tie. From there on in Lincoln played a control type of game and even though North fought hard to get hack in the ball game it was of no avail. julian Driver and Henry Sims led North with 16 and 11 points, respectively. North 50 - King 59 North again came out on the short end of the score. We had a well-balanced attack and outscored King from the floor in Held goals but the Generals hit from the freefthrow circle more consistently. Although the Blue Devils lost the game it was not until the linal two minutes that King was able to take thc lead. Julian Driver was high point man for North with 16 points. North 53 - Custer 60 North once more suffered defeat at the hands of Custer. The Indians led all through the game, and there was little that the Blue Devils could do to stop them and Dick Laabs who finished the game with 34 points. Julian Driver was high for North with 16 points North 60 - East 53 The Blue Devils came up with their first win of the season in the conference by topping East. North's starting team of Julian,.Driver, john Himmelmann, Paul Schulze, Roosevelt Blackshire, and Ray Wylier played the entire game. East led at the half 30 to 29, but North exploded for 10 straight points within the first two minutes of the third quarter and were never headed after that. There was well balanced scoring for the Blue Devils with Driver, Blackshire, Schulze, and Himmelmann scoring 19, 14, 13, and 12 points, respectively. 100 -- North 55 - South 62 Although North suffered its fourth loss of the season, they played brilliant hall against the city's number one team. All through the first half the Blue Devils Pushed the Cardinals, and the half ended 29 to 22 in favor of South. In the third quarter the South quintet hit the basket consistently while the Blue Devils could only connect on 3 Held goals in 22 attempts, and the score at the end of the third quarter was 62 to 40. Now North found the range once again and while we kept South from scoring any points in the fourth period we pumped in 15 points and the game ended with the sound of the buzzer and the final score was South 62, North 55 Julian Driver and john Himmelmann led North with 15 and 14 points, respectively. North 52 - Tech 74 Once again the Blue Devils tasted the pain of defeat at the hands of a hot Tech quintet. The game was an even contest up to the third quarter and the score at the end of the half was 28 to 27 in favor of the Trojans. At the beginning of the third quarter the Tech quintet began to forge ahead and the Blue Devils seemed helpless. From there on in the Trojans kept the lead and won easily. High point men for North were John Him' melmann with 13 and Paul Schulze, 12. North 68 - Washingtoii 63 North won its second game of the season by tipping a young Washington team. The half ended in favor of the Blue Devils, 39 to 30. With the start of the third quarter, Washington began to hit the hoop and at one time came within two points of the Blue Devils. Fortuf nately, North was able to keep the lead and went on to win. At times in the fourth quarter, Wash- ington seemed about to take the lead and the closing minutes of the game were very close. Julian Driver then began to control more than his share of the rebounds and dropped in two Held goals and three free throws to clinch the game. Driver was high for North with 20 points. One reason for the victory was that North's five starters all scored in douhle iigures. Jim Kimble, John Himmelmann, Julian Driver, Roosevelt Pmlackshire, and Henry Sims had 17, li, 13, 12, and 10 points, respectively. North 49 - Juneau 71 North's short winning streak was halted by the Pioneers from Juneau. Throughout the game the Blue Devils could not seem to play thc type of game that they had played in the two previous games. The halfftime score was 32 to 27, in favor of Juneau. At the beginning of the second half North cut the lead to two points, hut the Pioneers quickly retaliated with three quick haskcts and stayed in front for the rest of the game, John Himmelmann and Julian Driver each had 15 points for the game. 'The game was a nipfandftuck affair throughout the Hrst half: during that time no one of the two teams led by more than five points. In the second half the Red Cats' height advantage appeared to be the decisive factor, and Bay View slowly but surely pulled away to a comfortable lead. The Blue Devils made one more attempt to overtake them, but after a few quick baskets they were held to an even scoring pace. john Himmelmann scored four points in the first half and IR points in the second half to total 22 points for the game. North 54 - Pulaski 74 Witlm this game the 195536 basketball conf ference closed. Pulaski, which had set a new individual team scoring record, was held to only 74 by the North defense: however, it was enough to win because North was able to score only 54. Once again the Blue Devils were faced with a team superior in height, a fact which seemed to be the big factor in the victory for Pulaski. Jim Kimble was high for North with 13 points. ITS A TOSSUP! In the Milwaukee State Relays with twenty-four schools comf pcting, North tied for second place with East and Kenosha. Four Letter mcn, Alvin Little, Willie Nash, David Schultz and Henry Sims, along with Julian Driver seemed, at the outset of the season, to he the hoys most capable of placing for the "Blue and White." On the dark side of the picture the squad was very thin as far as experience was conf ccrned. Even with much coaching and a warm spring it would, indeed, have been difficult to equal the fourth place teams of last year-Ato say nothing of approaching the championship of 1954. On the hright side, North's 'Track Team for the first time had a practice Held of its own. For the first time in years North had enough hoys out that there was a certainty of Fresh' manfSophomore squad. The enthusiasm and the numher of younger boys, along with the possihility of discovering ahility in the gym classes, indicate that future "Blue Devils" in track uniforms should give a good account of themselves. iv BASEBALL SQUAD FOR 1956 Bottom Row: O. It has nine returning lettermen from the previous season, the mound staff being led by Paul Schulze and Ronald Ross. Curt Harris has been switched into the catching position, since there is a lack of catchers. North, as picked by the local scribes, was chosen to end up in the second division. The first game against Rufus King, which was to he a title contender, proved very successful with Ron Ross pitching a fivefhit shutout, winning 6 to O. Northside has every right to expect many good things from its baseball team now playing in its third year in the City Conference. North's team has such standouts as Charles jones in cen- ter field, john Boschek at third base, David Heinbach at first base and Donald Newfuss in left field. From Coach Anderson's viewpoint the squad has very good potential and could very well be the surprise of the league. That prediction is yet to be seen as we go to press.
