Opening Page Registration What is Registration? It is the process of setting up your classes, standing in endless lines, getting your mailbox number, paying fees, and a number of other time-consuming things. But, all of this must be done before you can start attending classes at SSS. Richard L. Holm, Director of Admissions and Records, reported that 3,184 students enrolled at Science this fall. There are 1.035 girls and 2,149 boys.NDSST WELCOME PICNIC ON OVA DANCE REDWOOD RM 5 PM IIPM 8PM Opening Page 3Spring Fling Spring Fling Spring Fling is an annual event which is fun and games for everyone. For one week in April, contests of all kinds were held. Clubs and individuals competed in sack races, kite flying contests, running races, banana-eating contests, water balloon toss, pushing peanuts with their nose, a scavenger hunt, and eskimo roll. Also professional frisbee-throwers demonstrated on the oval. Environmental Systems was the first club to receive the traveling trophy. Each year the trophy will go to the winning club. Spring Fling was sponsored by the Student Activities Board. It was a welcome break from classes and everyone enjoyed getting out in the nice spring weather and having some fun.Spring Music This Spring, the members of the NDSSS Wildcat Singers and Stage Band went on a six-day concert tour of 13 schools in South Dakota and Minnesota. They spent three days in South Dakota and two days in Minnesota. The music they presented was a variety of pop and swing music. After returning from their tour, the groups performed a special concert performance in Bute Gym. Tilford Kroshus directs the folk group and George Helm leads the stage band. 8 Spring MusicParents’ Day Parents’ Day was held Friday, March 23, at NDSSS. Despite the cold and blustery weather, an estimated 1,400 parents visited their son or daughter and toured the college’s facilities. A record 1,474 parents and sons or daughters attended the noon luncheon and a large number of parents and students attended a special Parents' Day program in Bute Gym. Snow flurries and the cold weather didn't seem to stop the parents from attending Parents’ Day. as many arrived early Thursday to hear the Music groups perform. Byron Johnson, representing the Wahpeton Chamber of Commerce’s Education Committee, presented an award for the parents traveling the farthest distance. The award was presented to Mr. and Mrs. Carl Seifert of Poison, Montana. The Seiferts came 1,150 miles to visit their daughter, llene Hamilton, a second year student in Dental Hygiene. In past years. Wildcat Willie • a costumed student selected by the Student Cabinet • has appeared at athletic contests with cheerleaders to assist in boosting the spectators' spirit. Willie was only 11 inches long and 7 inches high when he was brought to Wahpeton in July. He was first introduced to the students at the Homecoming Assembly in Bute Gym, when Wahpeton businessman, Warren Dobcrstcin, presented him to the college's Student Cabinet president and Edward Werre, NDSSS athletic director. The kitten’s first appearance at a college athletic event was the Homecoming Game on October 13. In February, 1979, Wahpeton Park Supt., Wendell Langcndorfer. purchased Willie, yet four months unborn, from Walter Brown of Arlington, S.D. Langendorfer is a veteran at training animals, and Willie is now spending time at his home. Although officially owned by the zoo association, Willie was bought by Country Kitchen, Northwestern Sheet and Iron Works. First Bank of North Dakota, and Wahpeton Auto Parts, each of them paying one quarter of the $600 price. 62 Wildcat Willi Homecoming Activities 1979 NDSSS Homecoming Week was held October 8-13. Seventeen second-year girls from North Dakota and Minnesota competed for the title of Homecoming Queen. The candidates were introduced at an all-college assembly in Bute Gym on October 2, with the first election following. This election narrowed it down to three candidates: Sandy Cross. Milnor; Jody Espelien, Park River; and Ruby Kascman. Wishek. Monday. October 8 was the final queen election and the Powder-Puff football play offs. The “Pott County Pork and Bean Band” performed in Bute Gym on Tuesday. Wednesday the Powder-Puff Football Championship, the Queen coronation, and the Queen's reception were held. Sandy Cross, a Dental Hygiene student from Milnor. N.D., was crowned the 1979 NDSSS Homecoming Queen by President Clair T. Blikre. Thursday and Friday were devoted to finishing the floats for the parade. At 10 a.m. Saturday, the parade marched through Brcckcnridge and Wahpeton. with the Environmental Systems Club winning first place for their float. The Lettermen’s Brunch and the Honored Classes Luncheon followed the parade. At 1 p.m. the Wildcats took on the Minot State Beavers and won 15-14. The Lettermen’s Reunion and the Alumni Recognition Dinner were held later that afternoon. "The Phones” played for the Homecoming Dance from 8-11 in the Redwood Room. There were many times in the past few months when we said “We’ll never get it done on time.” But we did, and we feel fortunate to have had the opportunity of editing this yearbook. As we look through this yearbook, we see memories that can only be shared by students who attended NDSSS in 1979-80, and that’s what makes it special to us. We hope you enjoy looking through the 1980 AGAWAS1E as much as we enjoyed putting it together for you. We hope it will represent a very special time in your life, and that looking back through it in ten or fifteen years from now will help you remember NDSSS. For us as editors, this yearbook holds many memories of the hours spent working together with our dedicated staff, Del Sanders, our advisor, and Arland “Mud” Waters, our representative from Fargo. We hope it holds pleasant memories for you too! Kathy and Melody
