Business Manager Mike Sc her ling Charlotte Mohs. . Don P. Miller Vernon Hektner Odin Stutrud . . . PhotographerFOREWORD The dictionary defines a yearbook as "a book published yearly as a report or summary of the statistics or facts." The 1968 Agawasic is attempting to follow this definition and also expounding on it. It is attempting to bring you not only the facts of the school, but also the people who run the school and most important, the students as individuals and groups who are the life-blood of every school. The pictures in this book say more than simple words could. As you page through this book, you will notice that students are shown in their many activities—studying, working, playing and relaxing. It is the hope of the 1968 Agawasic staff that you will enjoy this annual and will look at it years from now and remember the events that happened and the people you met while attending the State School of Science.Table Of Contents Administration... 13 Faculty........... 21 Graduates......... 29 Sports............ 65 Freshmen.......... 89 Activities........129 Advertising.......157 3t. d % -m. an environment which retains past traditions, provides for present needs . . .revise -■ - --- — -» •• ••■ ' i • w; vi w. The staff and advisor are to be commended for this “outstanding annual.” May this annual continue to bring back fond memories as you retrace the past, and may it serve as an inspiration as you recall the achievements of your many friends. It is our sincere hope that this year has been most eventful and fruitful for all who have been in attendance. We hope that because of this experience, the young men and women have gained in wisdom and stature and arc ready to accept future opportunities, challenges and responsibilities. Our society will demand much, thus it is the individual’s responsibility to do his job in a superior fashion. Our society will remain static if the standards we set for today’s attainment are no higher than yesterday’s and tomorrow’s no higher than today’s. The pursuit of “excellence” will always be the root of real progress. It is something we owe not only to society but to ourselves? We congratulate all who have completed this phase of their training and wish them every success in the years ahead! Being merely adequate is not sufficient, however, and is not in keeping with the philosophy of the “North Dakota State School of Science.” We ask that in your daily efforts that you arc ever mindful that progress comes from a job well done, and that certain personal attributes—integrity, initativc creativity, and responsibility—will continue to be key factors for success in life. May the training and experience gained so prepared you that: "While each calls to each, ’Good luck, there friend!’ and inwardly thinks, 'Well, here is the end! The end? No, just the beginning; just a few things end when our scroll is won. The world needs all that we have to give, so we will keep on learning and working as long as we live."!»• Vernon E. The Wildcats, outweighed in every position, were hampered by injuries early in the game. Stan Eckhoff, defensive end, was hurt in the first quarter; Bill Dowzak, tackle, went out in the second quarter, and Larry Ziegler, halfback, was out in the third quarter. The loss of these three key players slowed the Wildcats offense considerably. Two field goals in the second quarter started the scoring for Worthington. The one touchdown scored was on a long sliding ground pass in the end zone. Coach Hermes had 30 players sec action during this season opener. Foiled in all but 4 of their pass attempts, the Wildcats gained but 33 yards on passing.SSS 6 Minot 61 Capitalizing on Science School mistakes, the Minot State Beavers scored 47 points in the second half to down the Wildcats 61-6. Minot scored twice on four pass interceptions. The Science Wildcats lost all three fumbles they committed. Mike Ripley scored on a seven yard run for Science's one tally of the game. The Wildcats had a total of 102 yard penalties. Gail completed 10 of the 25 pass attempts for a total of 37 yards gained passing. Despite the score. Science School led in first downs 13-12 and trailed 333 to 171 in total game yardage. SSS 7 Ellendale 7 The Wahpeton Wildcats nearly broke their hard luck streak when they held the Ellendale Dusties at bay in a 7-7 tie game. The Wildcats drew first blood early in the first quarter when Larry Ziegler made a 15 yard sprint to pay dirt. Mike Gail took the kick for the bonus point, the final Wahpeton score of the game. Halftime score was Wahpeton 7. Ellendale 0. The game was one mainly of attrition, with first one defensive squad wearing down their opponents, then the other. Ellendale outgained the Wildcats in total yardage gained, but was unable to make the last push for more points. SSS 21 Mayville 21 On a soggy field under rainy skies, the Wahpeton Wildcats battled the tough Mayville State College Comets to a 21-21 standstill in Chahinkapa Park at the State School of Science Homecoming game. Touchdowns by Russ Evinrude and Larry Ziegler with the extra points made by Paul Ferric made the score 14-14 at half time. The Comets scored early in the second half to push ahead of the Wildcats 21-14. It was not until the last 2 minutesand 41 seconds that Wahpeton evened up the score with a touchdown by Ziegler, the extra point again being made by Ferric. SSS 0 Valley City39v There was a chill wind blowing in Valley City as the Wildcats bowed to the Valley City State College Vikings. The Vikings outclassed the Wahpeton squad in offensive drive, picking up two touchdowns in the first quarter. Wildcat quarterback Mike Gail tried an airborne attack on his opponents late in the first period of play, but was thwarted when halfback Jim Carey missed the ball and Viking halfback Tim Schilling did not. Mid game score stood at Valley City-25, Wahpeton-O. The second half was dotted with mistakes. As the game went into its final period the score nearly duplicated the halftime tally. The final score was Valley City-39, Wahpeton-O. SSS 21 Dickinson35 Despite a total offensive effort of 234 yards by Larry Ziegler, the Wildcats fell to the Dickinson Savages. Ziegler put on his best offensive effort of the season with 211 yards gained by rushing and was on the receiving end of two Mike Gail passes for an additional 23 yards. The third quarter was Wah-peton’s best defensive effort. Scoring all three Wahpeton touchdowns, Ziegler had 18 of the Wildcat’s 21 points, the other three coming as kicks from placement by Paul Ferric. The Science eleven faced two of the better backs in the conference in Gary Schmaltz and Hill How-man. At the same time, the Wildcats lost the services of fullback Russ Evinrude early in the game and reserve fullback Jerry Hrullag left a short time later with an elbow injury. 71SSS 7 Jamestown 53 Jamestown completed its unbeaten sweep to the North Dakota College Athletic Conference football title by downing the Widcats 53-7. The Jimmies, NDCAC rushing leaders, held a wide statistical advantage, including penalties. Jamestown drew seven personal foul penalties and nine overall, being set back 124 yards for their tactics. Despite their penalties, they led at halftime 41-0. Wahpeton’s only touchdown came on a pass from Mike Gail to Steve Libcrda in the third period. John Young recovered two fumbles for the Wildcats and Gene Gagne also performed creditably on defense. SSS40 Willmar 36 The Slate School of Science "Wildcats" defeated previously unbeaten Wilmar Junior College 40 36. With a cold wind blowing and late in the game some light snow, the fans saw the Wildcats put on one of their best performances of the season. The game got off to a fast start as Jim Carey took the opening kickoff for Wahpcton and ran it back to the Wilmar 16 yard line. Later, Mike Hcnncn took over at quarterback for the Wildcats when Mike Gail was injured and Hcnncn threw a touchdown pass to Paul Duffncr, Paul Ferric kicked the extra point and it was 13 7 Willmar. at the end of the first quarter.
