We arc very proud of all these buildings, but our teachers and faculty have given us a much greater wealth than these structures combined—an education. We have one of the finest schools in the nation and we are all very proud to be students at the North Dakota State School of Science. We only hope we can show our respect and admiration for Science in the right way. Our modem annual is, we hope, one of these ways. We shall, as years go by, think of SSS as the modem school with the modem teaching methods. 3DEDICATION For the tireless effort lie puts forth in the excellent quality printing of our yearbook, the 1961 Agawasie is dedicated to Mr. Odin Stutrud, second year presswork instructor and printing advisor for the yearbook. It is because of men like Odin Stutrud that the printing industry has progressed to the high position it now enjoys in our country. Thank you for a job very well done.DMINISTRATIONBoard of Higher Education Dr. A. F.. Mead Commissioner Albert Dan President Hismarck New Rockford Marlin G. Kruse Kimlml Mildred II. Johnson Wahpoton Fred Orth Grand Forks Fleirti Jeslruh Wllllstoil Ralph Christensen was appointed to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of C. W. Baker of Minot. Ray Schnell is filling out the term of M. S. Byrne of Bowman and will be succeeded on July 1. 1961 by John Conrad of Bismarck. A Word from the Governor . . . One hundred years ago, Dakota Territory was formed and settled by determined people. We have progressed well from one generation to another, but ahead are critical years for North Dakota. Important decisions must be made. Trained, energetic people arc needed to make these decisions and carry them out. North Dakota needs you on its farms, in its towns, cities and counties. We need your talents in industry—farming, petroleum, commerce, milling, and our other means of production. Most of all, we need your determination to make your North Dakota community a satisfying place in which to live. North Dakota is proud to have provided you with the technical training so necessary for success in the future. Whether you stay in the state or choose to work in another state, I urge you to use your talent for the good of our growing nation. Governor Hill GunII'. M. Nordguard, Registrar and Director of Business School Division; Janies A. Horton, Director of Trade-Technical Division; Vernon Hektner, Dean of Junior College. A Message from the President . . . In the first issue of our school paper last fall, I sincerely urged students to strive for excellency. I commented on the fact that we arc living in a good age but also in a dangerous age; and, that in this critical period, we must not adjust ourselves to mediocrity. It is my feeling that this is so important in the years just ahead that it will bear constant repetition. It is the responsibility of parents, teachers, administrators and students to set patterns of excellence in grade schools, in high schools, and in colleges throughout the nation. Generations come and generations go; and. if we are to survive, we must establish standards of excellence that will result in habits of thinking and habits of doing that which will cause individuals to rise above mediocrity. I like very much the statement made by Mr. Albert Haas, President of our State Board of Higher Education, in a brochure that has just come off the press at the time I am preparing this statement for your annual. Mr. Haas says: “The price of excellence is high, but the price of mediocrity is higher.’ To those of you who arc completing courses with us this year, I commend you to think always in terms of excellence. If you continue your education, be satisfied only with excellence as your goal. If you are going to employment, the same thinking and the same attitude apply equally well. To those of you who will be returning next year, I urge that you keep striving for excellence. There is satisfaction in doing so and the dividends arc high. 11Or I in link ken. Seniority is an indication that this experience is producing the desired results. Becoming mature and useful citizens is the result of the maturation process—a process that culminates in the title "senior.” Whenever our educational processes fail to have goals consistent with these high hopes, it will have ceased to merit the public’s confidence. The faculty is proud of all of the 1961 seniors. It is their hope that they have succeeded in turning anxious freshmen into confident seniors. Traditionally yearbooks feature all seniors. This is as it should be. However, there arc always some who lead while others follow. These nine specially featured seniors by their qualifications merited special consideration. High academic proficiency, leadership, willingness to accept responsibility and general contribution to the many phases of campus life are the hallmarks of college success. It was to these characteristics the faculty committee addressed itself in the selection of these seniors. It is their hope that by saluting these seniors, all seniors are recognized for their contribution to the success of the school year. May memories of this school year remain in the hearts of all seniors forever. The Faculty CommitteeJudy Schuman Judy Schuman is a graduate of Herman High School and of Willmar Practical Nursing School.
