. r '5$ "Dedication To you, James A. Horton, the staff of the 1958 AGAWASIE, respectfully dedicate this yearbook. We recognize in you a symbol of our aspirations. As our counselor, we respect your judgement and sincere concern for our welfare. As our friend, we enjoy just knowing you. You’re that kind of a fellow. As our exemplar, we could well emulate those characteristics which you so obviously display, and which are its warp and woof of all that denotes strength in mankind. 4tyieetiayA 'pram t e {fa enaon. John E. Davis Governor of North Dakota Greetings: With the ever increasing demand for people trained in trades and business and with the continued increase in the number seeking such knowledge, it is readily apparent the important part the North Dakota State School of Science plays in education. To satisfy this demand and to give knowledge to those seeking it, we must have an adequate physical plant with qualified personnel. It is the duty of the state to provide both. Also, we must have a student body intent to learn and a desire to master the course. These three elements operating at maximum efficiency will provide individuals well prepared to take their places in trades and business, stimulating their growth and insuring their continued success. Fortunate are the students who have teachers dedicated to the teaching profession who impart to them a thorough understanding of the subject they teach and whose primary objective is to prepare the students so they may be successful in their chosen fields. In Mr. James A. Horton, Director of the Trades Division, we have such an individual. It is fitting and proper that this yearbook be dedicated to him. He does not seek praise, his interest is in his students. Their success is his success. We in North Dakota are happy and proud to have had Mr. Horton with us these many years and hope he will remain many more. To the staff of Agawasie, the personnel and the students of the North Dakota State School of Science, my every good wish for success. JOHN E. DAVIS Governor of North Dakota 10Mildred B. Mead Bismarck State “ifyiy iez ScCucatcott The colleges and universities in our state are governed by the State Board of Higher Education. This board is made up of seven members appointed by the governor, and a commissioner elected by the board. Newly elected commissioner this year is Dr. A. E. Mead, formerly commissioner of education in South Dakota. Mr. Martin Kruse is president and Mr. M. S. Byrne is vice-president. The board of higher education makes the budget requests and reports for seven institutions under its control. It also has the power to organize or reorganize these institutions to specify or change their prescribed cur-riculums. The new dormitory which will be built at the Science school this summer was made possible in part by the recommendation of the state board. nLeft to right: Wally iXordgaard, Jim Horton. Chief Haverty, I 'em Hektner, Cordon Patterson. Folks who cany the responsibility for this 1957-58 Yearbook have worked long and hard to make it one of the best. From what I have seen up to the time this is written, I am sure it will be an annual of which we can be mighty proud. My congratulations to its producers. Many of you will put this Yearbook away after you and yours have had an opportunity to look through its various sections and pages. Then some ten or twelve or fifteen years from now, you will happen upon it and you’ll sit down and go through it again, page after page. You will look at the pictures of your classmates. You will, probably, have kept in touch with a few of them, and you will know what they are doing and where they are located. You will wonder about others. Here is hoping that, through it all, you will have fond memories of your college year of 1957-58. It is our wish that, as you reflect back on that year at the State School of Science, you can say that it was a most pleasant and profitable experience. My personal good wishes to each one of you who are completing courses this year. Good luck in your ventures in the years ahead, and may God bless you. I hope there will be a warm place in your heart for SSS; and that you will lend your support to the expansion and improvements that we must make in the next decade. Many of you are completing your first year of work with good records. May I urge that you return next year to complete your work with us. We will be looking for you next September. Sincerely, 12 G. They are not Einsteins nor are they completely lacking in grey matter; they are typical of their class in personality, intelligence, and all around good citizenship. They have been chosen as representative students because their fellow classmates have given them responsiblity and they have accepted this torch of responsibility willingly, and carried on in their various pursuits in a creditable manner. We are proud of our seniors and we take this means of expressing our pride. These chosen seven are not gods on pedestals. They may even cut a class once in a while for no other reason than that they didn’t feel like going. But they have demonstrated through their leadership and scholarship that there is hope, even promise, in the seniors about to go forth from our midst into the world to make their mark. JANITOR'S LAMENT I'm only a janitor in a state school. Which most teachers think is two steps from a fool. We go to great pains to keep the building neat; We shovel and sweat to keep up the heat; We run our legs off to do many odd jobs For a lot of teachers who act like snobs. From early morn till late at night It's do this, do that—and we’re seldom right— Fix a clock, fix a shade, fix a desk, fix a door, Hang a picture, set the stage, open a window, mop the floor; Move a bookcase, pot a plant, sew a curtain that is torn— Please, Mr. Janitor, get my groceries from the store, Each janitor has thirty teachers or more Who think the wastebasket is all over the floor. We try to keep order; we try to do right; Keep an eye on the students: stop many a fight. If only each teacher would just stop and say, “If twenty-five janitors came to me every day, And I was asked only to do a little for each. When in the world would I have time to teach ?" 121 mum 1 ! A Ui : tm hath a trade hatPHILOSOPHY OF LIFE Di l it ever occur to you that a man’s life is full of crosses and temptations? He comes into the world without his consent, and goes out against his will, and the trip between is exceedingly rocky. The rule of contraries is one of the features of this trip. When he is little, the big girls kiss him; when he is big, the little girls kiss him. If he is poor, he is a bad manager, if he is rich, he is dishonest. If he needs credit, he can’t get it; if he is prosperous, everybody wants to do him a favor. If he is in politics, it is for graft; if he is out of politics, he is no good to his country. If he doesn't give to charity he is a stingy cuss; if he does, it is for show. If he is actively religious, he is a hypocrite; if he takes no interest in religion, he is a hardened sinner. If he gives affection, he is a soft specimen; if he cares for none, he is cold blooded. If he dies young, there was a great future for him; if he arrives at an old age, he missed his calling. EEN' MARILYi KING gVy MORAL If you save money, If you spend it. If you get it, If you don't get it, you're a grouch; you're a loaf, you’re a grafter you’re a bum.126 Editor Kay Lewis checks layout with Advisor Gordon Plum. Hoy Hausauer. d 'portrait TRetcctne Seven returning lettermen helped the Wildcats post a 5-won, 2-lost record for the 1957 football season. Captains Bob Johnson and Duane Nelson, along with Clayton McKay, Vcrn Bloom, Bob Peterka, Roland Wettstein, and All-Conference end Dean Bladow, were the former letter winners. The Wildcats started the season with a surprise victory over Mayvillc, defeating the Comets 13 to 9. Bill Svenkeson opened the scoring with an intercepted pass, but going into the final minutes of the game, the Comets came into the lead, 9-7. Pinky Dcring finally scored on a 35-yard run from scrimmage to win the game for the Wildcats. Minot handed the Cats a 7-0 defeat in their second game by recovering an SSS fumble in the first quarter, and Doyle Radke. All-Conference half, went 33 yards for the only TD of the game. A rash of penalties made this game one of the poorest for the Cats. Against non-conference Bethel of St. Paul, after trailing 12-7 at the half, SSS put together some good ball and scored twenty points in the second half. Pinky Dering and Mike Vanyo each scored once, and Dean Bladow crossed the tally-line twice. The Wildcat eleven lost their second conference game to Valley City Teachers College, by a 26-7 score, at Valley City. Behind 13-0 at half-time. Science scored at the start of the third quarter, but couldn't get across the ten-yard line. Valley City scored two more TD's in the final quarter, to end a bad day for SSS. SSS spoiled Bottineau's homecoming to the tunc of a 31 to 0 drubbing. Dean Bladow once again scored twice, with Mike Vanyo, Don Odegard, and Bill Svenkeson contributing. Ellendale was defeated 12-6 by the Cats in the SSS homecoming game. The Cats drew first blood, scoring on a pass from Svenkeson to Bladow. After a 6-6 half-time tie. Dean Bladow blocked an Ellendale punt and fell on the ball in the end zone to put SSS in the winner's circle again. In the final game of the season, SSS ran over Bismarck in a game played in cold and wind at Bismarck, on frozen ground. After the Cats scored three times in the first period, and made further tallies, the game ended with the final score 33-6. The punting and place-kicking of Mike Vanyo were outstanding during the 1957 season. Backs Svenkeson. Dering. Odegard and Vanyo give promise of a good backfield next year. Linemen Mike Schaefer, John Erickson. Jim Parker, and Thorval Sax will be back to bolster the line. A new assistant to Skip this year was Roy Hausauer, who will be back next year. All in all. the 1957 season was good, and with the returning experienced players, next season could be somewhat better. 133Hilt Svenkeson Sam "Pinky" Dering Science men slop a run by the opposition. FEW OF THE OLDER GRADUATES WILL SEE THIS STATEMENT. WE WANT THOSE WHO ARE ABOUT TO GRADUATE TO KNOW OUR PROBLEMS AND OUR PLANS. Briefly: (1) The big: problem is extension of membership. We have a loyal core group, which, however, is only a small percentage of our 5.000 graduates. Dues are kept to $1 per year so that membership may be large. Our main difficulty is that so many think of dues only the terms of Homecoming. That is not the point. Recently an alumnus now in Arabia sent $100 to the Alumni Scholarship fund. That is the point. (2) We want all seniors to take membership in the Alumni Association. In getting the Scientist for next year and a new Directory when it is issued, you get more than you pay for. Again, that is not the point. We want your habitual activity. If all who loved the school were contributing—even a little—the Association could serve the school with complete efficiency. (3) At the annual meeting in October 1956, the North Dakota State School of Science Alumni Association amended the constitution and by-laws to approve a Life Membership. The fee for Life Membership was at the low figure of $15. We urge all graduates to take advantage of this low fee and apply for Life Membership immediately. Your name would be placed permanently on the mailing list of the Dakota Scientist—you will receive a copy of the new alumni directory that is being published, this will give you the addresses of classmates and school friends. (-1) Some talk of doing "great things"; but before thinking of these we have to extend our membership. Just now we have established two scholarship endowments and will soon establish more. A loan fund also is needed. During the past two years an alumnus in California has donated 5 scholarships (1 per year) and another in Boston has done the same. SENIORS! JOIN NOW! Lincoln A Mark of Distinction A GOOD EDUCATION AND VOCATIONAL TRAINING are assuming ever-greater importance in the lives of our people and in the welfare of our nation and state. Young people who take advantage of the opportunity to further their education and training in institutions of learning, such as the State School of Science, and those who seek to “learn by doing” by pursuing instruction in one of the many trades offered at this line school, are wise indeed. They are looking to the future. To them—because they have studied and prepared and are thus equipped to meet the challenges of business and industry—will fall the advantages in an age that is becoming more complex and more competitive every day. And to them will also surely come, as a result, the better things in life, including advancement in their chosen field of endeavor and greater financial rewards. THE WORLD OF TODAY needs educated, trained citizens. The world cries for leaders. Our nation demands them. And our own state of North Dakota, which is now at a crossroads of progress and development, seeks men and women of courage and vision who have prepared themselves to assume a part in the state’s forward march. Students of the State School of Science are important to the future. They count. WE AT THE GLOBE-GAZETTE pause to congratulate SSS graduates of 1958 as well as students who are completing their first year of college work and those who are “learning by doing” in the trades. We also extend warm felicitations to President G. W. Haverty, the staff of instructors, the school administrators, and the entire school personnel. They have made—and are continuing to make—outstanding contributions in the field of education and vocational training, and the young men and women who have come under their sphere of influence are the beneficiaries. IN OUR ANNUAL MESSAGE LAST YEAR we proposed a maxim especially for State School of Science. We submit it again now, with renewed emphasis: "Science Students Succeed" IT’S A MARK OF DISTINCTION to be a student and graduate of the State School of Science. May you carry that distinction with honor. Staff positions were not completely filled to begin with, nor were deadlines always met on time, but we struggled on, always striving to complete it. All of us on the Agawasie staff have worked many hard long hours to bring to you, the students and subscribers, a more colorful and interesting yearbook by putting into pictorial record the happenings and activities that you have participated in while here on the SSS Campus during the year. We hope that you will enjoy looking through your Agawasie now and in years to come, and that it will bring back fond memories of your schoool days here at Science. Our Printing Department here at Science under the guidance of Mr. Gordon Plum, Mr. Odin Stutrud, and Mr. Edward Adams, printed this entire yearbook. Many thanks should go to you for your helpful suggestions and patience with us. Speaking for the Agawasie staff, I want to express sincere thanks to Mr. Vernon Hektner, our faculty advisor, who always found time from his teaching duties to lend us a helping hand whenever we ran aground with some rough problem that seemingly had us stumped. In addition, I want to express my great appreciation and sincere thanks to Mrs. Robert Horne, of the Wahpeton Indian School, for so generously supplying me with literature and advising me as to the authenticity of the Indian costumes and symbols used on the characters of the various divisional pages which I had the pleasure of designing. Last, but by no means least, to the members of the staff for your fine cooperation and hard work; my personal thanks go to each one of you—Franklin Gilles, Business Manager; Mike Haverty, Admininstration; Dale Cameron, Graduates; Russell Kastelle, Freshmen; Peter Martin, Organization; Ronald Fredrickson, Campus Life; Sam Farlow, Sports; Earl Hoppert, Advertising; Arlen Nielson, Lester Hanson, Pete Kaplor, Photographers. With this publication, the ’58 Agawasie brings to a close another chapter of your school life. We of the staff sincerely wish that you will always treasure and smile nostalgically whenever you page through your ’58 Agawasie in the years to come. Good luck and goodby from the staff and from me. May you prosper and live wisely and honestly on which ever of life’s many crowded highways your chosen work may lead you. Sincerely, Herb C.
