Their cheers help to increase the enthusiasm of the fans, and together they inspire the team members to give the game their best. Besides honoring select faculty and administration figures with a thorough drenching, students participated in a number of 'KX other entertaining activities. All in all, the weekend served to XM - Q ,px . demonstrate to parents that Wesleyan offers their children an at- mosphere conducive to more than merely academic pursuits. 1' it KA" 9 59,1 WU VN -8 W '- r' M 'i ,, Rlrtrlwwt 4 tiftimlrhf i wi' '..E.uiai9sitik3mT,.xHf5Bm.liitnwJ4i,m Lv-we "' j,,,,f ,',,l'Q3Q,, 4 'jf .ig-fan isnt.: .1,,Q"'e'5ie.f": in-1, 1" L V '- gn,-1 ,yt-V qw HOMECOMI G The annual Wesleyan Homecoming dance was held Saturday night, October 25 at the Shrine Club. It presented the Conti- nental Theatre Company's production of the off- Broadway hit "Dames at Sea," the lively jazz music of the Mac Frampton Trio, the third appearance at Wesleyan of the Preservation Hall jazz Band, and an exciting new concert ensemble, the New England Sinfonia. Each gave an outstanding perfor- mance and was well-received by both students and off-campus guests. As always, Preservation Hall drew the largest audience, with over 1000 in atten- dance. Such a response was fantastic and one which really should be present at every perfor- mance in the series. Considering the fact that ad- mission is free to Wesleyan students, it's sometimes disappointing that more of them don't take advan- tage of it. --T-9-,-1- . .- . ll? - A -' . 1-"' ' .. -n LK . 3- if L43:.fQ,l.l 'X ' " ' ' "' '11 ' ,J 5. Due to the relatively small size of the group the members are able to form strong friendships and get to know each other's abilities quite well. This helps them improve the quality of their singing and also aids Mr. Lovelace in his ef- forts to get the highest level of achievement possible from each individual. This task has its technical aspects such as pho- tography, layout design, copy preparation, and so forth. Most difficult though is the challenge to combine these into a yearbook which will be ap- pealing when it is published and also increase in value as the years go by. If we have been able to achieve this goal in the 1976 Dissenter, then a'l our time and energy devoted to it was xx ell- spent. y ioo Under the sponsorship of the Rocky Mount chapter of Pilot International, Compass Club provides an opportunity for interested stu- dents to be of service both to Wesleyan and the Rocky Mount community. This year the club's effectiveness was reduced due to grad- uation of former members and an inability to attract new ones among Wesleyan's lowered student population. During the 1976-77 year Compass hopes to do its part in meeting the needs of the campus and especially desires once again to provide den leaders to Cub Scout Pack 767. lil!! A wide vari- etv of speakers otfered a broad Spectrum of views on the topic "The Heritage of the American Revolution". Perhaps most pop- ular were the two special pre- sentations by john kohler ot Baltimore, Maryland. His dramas "When Freemen Shall Stand" and "The World Turned Upside Down" gave an entertaining and informative insight into the War of 1812 and American Revolu- tion eras. Participation by stu- dents and faculty members highlighted the performancex. Directed by Dr. David lones, the convocations program affords everyone at Wesleyan the op- portunity to hear and be chal- lenged bv new perspectixes on important issues of the dav. Organized by Mr, lim Keene of the Office for Chil- dren, State of North Carolina, and spon- sored by the local Jaycees, Special Olympics is designed for school children enrolled in special education courses for the mentally handicapped. Through the efforts of Eddie Scarborough, a recent Wesleyan graduate, our campus was chosen as the site for the area runoffs leading to the statewide contest. About 250-300 local children participated, with assistance being given by Professors lohnston, Matthews, and Harrison, the Wesleyan Women, and many student volunteers, especially from the various PE classes. Everyone involved enjoyed the day's activities immensely. 'sz.f::i1-.4fi5".'f 2 pm' .lv Si'-s -'ie 1 '. 'f:5::s - 'tis 1 ' A : l i 4 v r lrll 4- wi 1 ll-1 -t ,vi-wt.itat,-'....t-H.: ,watts it ,. Coming as it has at the end of the year, May Term allowed stu- dents and faculty to engage in intensive study of specialized topics, while also having time to take advantage of the newly-arrived spring weather. It has al- ways proved a great combination. This year, however, marked the last time Wesleyan will have a May Term. Begin- ning in 1977 the four week period will be moved to january. Certainly many of May Term's best features can be pre- senfed, but after the change it won't really be the same again. 5. s s 4 . , X l26 gi SPA ,.. 1 f +,',-1415 .21 - ' . vm l 1 , 4,1 ,: 1.5 7 JsgisifsfxlsMMWUMHHKMMMMWMQWMEQMMMMWIWMLWMWwiQiidmuma.1:44uemm1syhe:nsQzses1auemxassazu4QQua:sua:4mv.naneem1gamzcemmwml mum I , . . As is always the case in anything of this type, some aspects seem satisfactory and others make us wish we could have done better. ln particu- lar I regret the fact that poor lighting in the gym prevented us from getting any indoor photos of the graduation exercises. Despite all the difficulties we encoun- tered we hope the end result is something you will enjoy and find valuable in years to come. l want to express my sincerest thanks to everyone who helped in preparing this book, especially Betz Ricks, lan Wilson, Susie Williams, loe Allegood, Dr. Smith, Dean Horne, and Barbara Martin. The greatest thanks of all, though, must go to Elizabeth Cole, Pat Slone, and Bea Harrison whose help and encouragement kept me going in the early weeks of june when I needed it most. The 1975-76 academic year was one of change and new directions for Wes- leyan. l'm sure the Class of '76 enjoyed it, and I hope this book will do its part to help make the memories of it permanent. Now that our years at Wesleyan are over we want to wish the school a bright future, especially considering that it will be left in the hands of the group identified on the following page jimmy Davenport l 153 W f, m L A W 3 1 i 1 1 v 1.
