Reaching Their GOALS he NCSSM men’s soccer team had a strong sea- son, hosting the Conference Tournament and placing second in the Conference. Many of last year ' s juniors returned to play. on the team again this year. There were several new senior players and three junior additions who made a great impact on the success of the team. Goalie Jon MacMurray played in every game, eight of which were shutouts. Sean O ' Brian played very strongly, and the " Oriental Express” [Long Bui, Tony Choi, Richard Kim, and George Kwon) was a dominating force that led the team to its victories. Jon MacMurray said, " We really came together by the end of the season. ” " We were a TEAM, ” said Stewart Coulter. By the end of the season, the team had developed into i very talented group of players, placing them first in the Cor ference for the regular season. They hosted the Tournamen games, winning against Wake-Forest Rolesville, 3-0. Th championship match against Apex was very close. It ended af || ter double overtime and a shootout, with a score of 0-1 . Thiill put NCSSM 2nd in the Conference, and the team advanceil to the State Playoffs. What are the team’s prospects for next year? Threill seniors are returning, but the new soccer players will neei j some time to get accustomed to playing with each other. A:, long as they keep the same unity and determination, though there is no reason why they shouldn’t do just as well. But I STILL can’t see! Wake Forest vs. NCSSM, 3-2 AND 3-0! " You ' re not getting in front of me! " T he Cross Country teams ran to the top of the conference this year, thanks to their spirit, spunk, and white shorts, " as manager MeShelle Hart said. Many seniors returned to the team this year. Se- nior Steve George placed second in the confer- ence, and participated in the Junior Olympics along with Tripp Jones. Todd Ashe and Jon Davis came back as the team ' s captains. In addition to the experienced runners, several new members joined the team — juniors and seniors alike. It was hard, but a lot of fun, too. " said Michelle Williams. Overall, everyone ran well and did their personal best at every meet. The boys team ended the sea- son with an overall record of 44-6 and a Confer- ence of 21-0. Todd Ashe summed up the progress of both teams fairly well : I think our record says it all. The seniors came back with a mission to prove NCSSM was the best, and, with the help of some good juniors, we did. TOP CENTER fMichelle Williams keeps up the pace. A lthough the girls’ volleyball team did not rank in the top of the conference this year, they had a “winning season as far as team spirit is concerned, ” according to Coach Arlene Brown. Regardless of the score, the team retained an exceptional amount of optimism. Coaches, referees, and other teams often commented on the unity and good sportsmanship exhibited by NCSSM players. When asked to name the team’s greatest strength, our team’s response would invariably be, “Team spirit!” Even though the team consisted mostly of seniors, everyone was a “player” on the court. Kim Mantooth, Tina Burleson, and Aisha Horak will return to pass this sense of unity on to next year’s team and lead the Unicorns to another memorable season. Girls Volleyball: (top row) Ben Little (manager), Erika Roddy, Arlene Brown (Coach), Darla Pruette. (second row) Ruby Edwards, Alicia Smith, Sonya Hodge, Erica Smith, Aisha Horak. The team’s only losses occurred against Fuquay. Not only as the team outstanding overall, but some team members had an ' entful post-season. Many team members were honored by being lected for the All-Conference Team, while Lisa Walbolt was able to ipture the conference singles title, and the combination of Lisa and Elizabeth Cross won the Conference Doubles Tournament. The suc- cess of the team was probably enhanced by the number of returning seniors, along with the help of the few juniors that were on on the team. Next year, the team will have to rely heavily on new arrivals to fill the slots left vacant by the graduating seniors. Team members: (back row) Anne George, Jenny Good- all, Beth Krodel, Donna Brannock (front row) Eliz- abeth Cross, Alicia Rios, Laura Bassett, Kim Lutz, Lisa Walbolt. (not pictured) Jayashri Ghate, Rae Lynn Yates, Warren Baket (coach) Never Say Die! This year, the NCSSM boys’ basketball team faced some strong opposition, but even when our team was down, they never gave up. Often dur- ing the season the opposing team would end up winning, but only by a small margin. Despite the tremendous effort the players put into each game, they ended their season with a 1-17 conference record. Nevertheless, the year proved a valuable learning experience for those juniors who will re- turn to the team next year. Hopefully, such first- hand involvement will lead the unicorns to a winning season in ’89. BOYS’ BASKETBALL TEAM: (top row) Jim Bostick (coach), Dana Letchworth (captain), Chris Sheila, Matt Becker, Ron Hundley, Matt Mabry (captain), Robert Draper, Mike Carter, Trevor Grady, (bottom row) Eddie Jarman, Mark Ingle, Arthur Fu, Zerrick Bynum, Mark Jones, ady Unicorns Bounce Back! GIRLS’ BASKETBALL TEAM: (top row) Donna Brannock. Alicia Smith, Dawn Bennett, Tonyu Marshall, Ruby Edwards. Aisha Horak, Erica Smith, (bottom row) Marlene Gibson. Lisa Walbolt, Rhonda Overcash, Terra McKinnish Coach Curtis Hunter is pictured above. The NCSSM girls’ basketball team played really hard this year, and they finished the season with a 5-14 rec- ord. The girls were not intimidated by the fact that they were playing some of the toughest 2A teams in the state. They “let ’em have it” and kept the scores close. The team was fortunate enough to have Curtis Hun- ter, former UNC basketball player, as their coach. As this was Hunter’s first coaching position, both he and the girls learned a great deal this year. Hunter plans to return next year, along with several juniors; so the pros- pects for next year look good. 41 The S M wrestling team, which began its season with 30 members, dwindled down to its final size of ten. Despite the small size of the team, Coach Mike Walters was pleased with the season. Joey Staier, the team cap- tain, made his way to the state tournament this year where he earned 8th place in his weight division. Coach Walters feels that the completion of NCSSM’s gym next year will be very ben- eficial for the team. The gym will allow for home meets, so students’ support for the team can increase greatly. With the intense spirit of NCSSM fans on their side, there will be no stopping our team next year. This year’s swim team completed its sea- son with a winning 6-3 record. The boys closed their season at 5-3-1 , while the girls ended up at 2-7. The swimmers were under new leadership this year. Liz Dalmas, a senior at UNC-CH, coached and drilled the swimmers Monday through Friday. Helping her were Jennifer Guthrie, Ben Little, and Sasha Wood. Post-season play saw nine swimmers advance to regional competition, and two swimmers, Won Kim and Daphne Moore, earned the right to compete at the state level. vim team, left to right: Jennifer Guthrie, Sharon Gardner, Chris Heinze, Krissy Simeonsson, Daphne Moore, Julia Roos, Eliza ihnson, Terry Baggett, Mitchel Tatum, Thomas Hazel, Won Kim, Hyun Hee Min, Milton Artis, Craig Trauschke, Jenny Lindenber- 2r, Laurie Cross, Brett Cannon, Dean Nestvogel, Eugene Yen, Kirk Schmidt, Deborah Nemecek, Alan Jackson, Leslie Gaddis, -incan Parks, and Joel Holt. We organize activites for each club to par- ticipate in and help fund individual club projects. STUDENT COUNCIL W hat is Student Council An appropriate definition of Stu- dent Council is an elected union of students that serves the needs of fhe student body. Yet, while fitting for other Student Councils, this defini- tion does not fully describe the NCSSM Stu- dent Council. First, Student Council here is unlike any Student Council in North Carolina. We are not isolated or elitist, yet, we are strong. This strength comes from the student body. Often in the effort to achieve various goals, a Student Council may unintentionally iso- late itself from input from students. Yet, the students at NCSSM have an important part in what the Student Council decides. Without student participation, all the plan- ning and effort of the Student Counci would be without purpose. Second, the NCSSM Student Council represents determination. Determination with the highest degree of effort to get not just what the Student Council wants but also what the students want. This sharp de- termination has led me as wel I as other Stu- dent Council colleagues into discussion with various adult counterparts in our mi- crocosm. And Student Council has shown that determination does pay off in satisfy- ing the wants and needs of the students. Last, Student Council has meant confi- dence. Confidence in satisfying the desires of the students. This confidence is one of the biggest assets of the NCSSM Student Council. The confidence to succeed and not fail, yet the determination to try again after stumbling. This has been the Student Council for 1987-1988. This confidence, de- termination, and student support has en- abled Student Council to lead among leaders. This is something to be remem- bered. On and off campus the Student Activities Board under the guidance of Sandy Gosneil and Debbie Hardaway provided the students with many pleasant and happy memories. The S AB Committee Chairs — Audra Davis, Julie Ingle, James Rivenbark, and Laurie Cross spent many hours coordinating the planning, publicizing, and carrying out of the on and off campus events. SAB sponsored movies in the New Dorm Lobby, dinner, movie and shopping loops, free swims, trips to Franklin Street, bowling, roller skating, trips to the State Fair, ice skating, Duke and NCSO football games, concerts. Little Ger- man Band, Transactors and more. Once again, SAB proved that it was a vital part of student life at NCSSM. G Ae j 1 GSS. The club ' s purpose was to improve the skills of speech and debate. The club was divided into six teams: Policy Debate , Original Ora- tory, Student Congress , Humor- ous Dramatic Interpretation , Extemporaneous , and Lincoln Douglas Debate. This year the Policy Debate team was fortu- nate to have a real coach. Mr. Richard Odor was Duke Univer- sity ' s Debate coach. The Outdoors Club is definitely activity- oriented. Rock climbing, backpack- ing, canoeing and skiing were among the activities planned. A club for beginners, one of our main objectives was to get peo- ple that wouldn ' t other- wise go outdoors. We had advanced trips, but most don’t require any experi- ence. Our most basic goal is to have fun outdoors. We did great at that! Those in the club who are capable, teach other members how to do new things, and regular sessions are held to learn and practice. Other members also compete for the longest time with the hacky-sack, the best animal, the strangest frisbee throw, etc., etc. Our club is firmly dedicated to have a good time, and will never pass up the opportunity to do so. The NCSSM Wargaming Club is in its third year of existence. Officers this year are Eric Sharpe — Pres- ident, Lam T ran — Vice-President, Bruce Lee — Sec- retary Treaurer, Lawerance Liao — ICC Representa- tive. Our purpose is to promote wargaming, in gen- eral. Not only have classic wargames such as Avalon Hill ' s Diplomacy and Civilization been played, the club has provided the library with copies of the Mag- azine, The General. Beyond that, we, along with the Role-Playing Club, schedule many events. ROLE- The Pep Club Squad was resurrected this year under the leadership of Allison Ashley. Vigorous practices took place as members learned new chants and cheers. The PEP Club increased the morale of the student body by supplying balloons during soccer games and making posters. The PEP Squad also performed during half time at home basketball games. The purpose of the FOCUS CLUB is to introduce to the student body the ne- cessity of good grooming, personal hygiene, poise, and charm. FOCUS also tries to help young people build self- confidence. Workshops are done by pro- fessionals for the benefit of members. All the techniques that members learn are pre- sented through the fashion shows per- formed for the school. President — Renee Collins; Vice President — Terri Jones; Sec- retary — Charlene Warren; Treasurer — Annice Hood High School science clubs usually serve as oases of opportunities for cores of interested students. In that light, the whole NCSSM com- munity might be seen as one inclu- sive club. Our “club within a club” functions mainly to channel students to competitions, re- search symposiums, seminars and field trips. Fall competitions included a trip to UNC at Asheville for Science Day. Spring Competition revolved around Science Olympiad, spon- sored by Kevin Currie and Sarah Allen. Part of the Odyssey of the M ind competition involved con- struction of a “submersible” vessel to explore the Lost Continent of Atlantis. Students of Steve Warshaw and Colleen McNamara represented us at the North Carolina Student Academy of Science Research Symposium. Other club activities included career opportunity semi- nars, a campus pond reclamation project, a spring rocket shoot, and a science fiction film series. ' SCIENCE ANO 80 r - mm f ■ ■ II III —111 H MATHEMATICS Most NCSSM students have been on math teams at their old high school. But with all the other things going on, few stay in the Math Club when they come here. However, those few go farther than most would think possible. The NCSSM Math Club participates in three sets of con- tests. The first is in New York City Interscholastic Math League. In nationwide Atlantic and Pacific Math Contests, NCSSM is defending national champ. The best contests, though, are the meets. NCSSM goes to Duke, Davidson, College of Charleston, and N.C. State, plus hosting its own meet on Math Symposium Day. These meets give you a chance to see your friends from other teams and compete against the best math teams in the state. Also, the varying formats give you a chance to try different types of problems from proofs, to team prob- lems, to relays. NCSSM sends separate junior and senior teams, which usually place in the top five. At the first meet of the year, Duke, the junior team placed first and the senior team placed second. The NCSSM Math Club also gives us a chance to try some new things. Speakers from UNC, Duke, State, and NCSSM teach about different aspects of math than what we might find in class. Also, proofreading the N.C. Math League allows us to try writing and rewriting the questions for math contests. Planning for Math Symposium Day and the national ARML meet yields a different look at math con- tests. This year we have started math movies on some free nights. But the most important thing in math club is our coach, Mr. Goebel.
