But we are all differ- ent. We came here from var- ious backgrounds, with var- ious past experiences, with various strengths and weak- nesses. Living and working in a community had its advan- tages and disadvantages for all of us. At times, we had to conform ... to take on a group identity. But at other times, we sported a rugged individuality that set each one of us apart from those around us. However special we consider our school, we must remember that any in- stitution is only as special as the individual people associ- ated with it. At times, we were foolish and did not appreciate some of the peo- ple here. But most of the time, we were wise enough to know that we had some- thing very special here at NCSSM. The people. g SENIORS N I Finally, after many years, the end of our high school ca- reer is in sight. Beyond the horizon, we see only a haze of possibilities. Very little is certain. We wonder where we , ll be in a year. Will we be happy? Will we find friends as special as those we’ve found here? Will anybody care? We await graduation with mixed feelings . . . wanting to try some- thing new, to experience more, to continue learning about ourselves and about life . . . but dreading to say goodbye to our friends and our experiences here, and to our youth. We look behind us, hoping to find some words of wisdom spoken by a friend, a lesson learned by experience or a revelation of what is to come . . something to carry with us so that we won’t face the future empty handed. We weathered our senior year with all of its changes. We found new faces to replace those of old friends. We tackled more challenging assignments and we struggled at times with controversial new policies and rules. But despite a few stumbles along the way, most of us were happy. We now have a wealth of experience to draw on, and we’ve discovered that we have the patience and endurance to push ourselves even further. We are the Class of 1984, and we leave standing on our own feet, with our heads held high. We can do it again! sybi9 stevono N I a R SENIORS 10 Jaaj Beatrice - ( ' Tu rr t L a rwur _ ( H7 ' .s . In search of excel- lence. Was it PR or was it real? Probably a little of both. Most of us met the academic challenge, but our task was not always easy. Scheduling problems. Required assem- blies the night before three major tests. Too much work, too little time. Good time management and good study skills helped, at least for those of us who developed these necessities. Some of us didn ' t study enough, and some of us simply overbur- dened ourselves. Maybe nine classes were too much! But there was so much to choose from, including more specialized, quarter courses in Biology, independent study and the popular Mentor pro- gram. Special Projects Week was a nice break from the routine, and it enabled us to pursue experimental pro- jects without the time con- straints that haunted us dur- ing a normal week. Some of us were wise enough to take full advantage of the academ- ic opportunities available to us, including such extras as nightly tutorials. Some of us weren ' t. It was indeed the age of wisdom and at the same time, the age of foolish- ness. 39 Special Projects Week Special Projects Week, considered a highlight of the academic year, provided students time to learn more about their particular fields of interests. The week in- cluded academic field trips to Atlanta and Washington, D. C. , as well as lectures and labs on specific topics. Marine Invertebrate Zoology, Fortran and Rocketry were popular choices as were Jung and Synchronicity and Sports Medi- cine. Although most students were involved in this type of study, some chose to do independant projects. Some in- cluded Mechanical Drawing, designing a miniature model of the school and independant studies in math. 40 -41 42 43 44 Hugh Haskell put some-fun into Physics; Dick Brown, visiting mathematics in- structor from Exeter, N.H., added alot of spice to Precal- culus; Junior Jennifer Wal- ters learned to write a real lab report. 45 46 47 4B 49 Ill 111 111 1L IL IL J J J 222 a a a ooo 0 0 0 50 " It was the best of times, it was the worst of times ... Juniors were not alone this year in having to adjust to a new living environment. Seniors returned to find more structured, and in some cases, more frustrat- ing rules. No phone use dur- ing Study Hours and after midnight. Strict sign out pro- cedures. Can ' t wash clothes between S and 1 □. In room curfew at midnight. There were, of course, advantages to these new rules. It was easier to sleep and quieter when we wanted to study. Not that we didn ' t have our share of good and rowdy times. There was always time for play! On most halls, a close sense of family de- veloped through hall dinners, study breaks, trips and par- ties. Some halls " adopted " faculty members which gave teachers a chance to learn more about dorm life. Of course, our Resident Advi- sors were there to help when we stubbed our toe . . . and when we needed to go to the emergency room at 3 a. m. . . . and when we were locked out of our room . . . and when we needed someone who would listen. We looked forward to the weekends, when thanks to SAB, we could go ice skating, see a movie, shop at Crab- tree, or attend a dance on campus. Intramurals pro- vided yet another outlet for our energies, even though facilities were limited and scheduling was difficult. In addition to these activities, we spent three hours each week doing work service and community service. Some of us enjoyed these experi- ences, and for others it was just one more thing to crowd an already overloaded sched- ule. Meanwhile, back in the dorm, we counted on our □As to plan educational and social programs for our hall, although they too didn ' t have alot of free time! Still, most of them were there to help boost our spirits and to offer free advice. Sometimes it was impossible to do all the things we wanted to do. It was unbelievable how many things were scheduled at the same time. Oh, to do them all! B3 64 The Student Activities Board, better known as SAB, planned most of the on-campus and off-campus activities that students en- joyed during the year, includ- ing traditional van runs, dances, Coffee Houses and movies. New attractions in- cluded a YMCA lock-in and The Roommate Game, a spin- off of TV ' s " The Newlywed Game”. Other highlights in- cluded trips to the State Fair, the annual Halloween Haunted House, and the pop- ular Air Band Contest. Kim Frierson and Rick Fancher served as staff advisers to SAB. In addition, the Student Council sponsors various activities which are open to the entire NCSSM communi- ty. The ladies won only one game this year, but their spirit and determination remained high all season.
