As they arrived with parents, grandpar- ents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles and sometimes the family dog or cat, some juniors faced their first week enthusiastically; others, reluctantly. Welcoming the first class were RAs, DAs, teachers, administration staff and the orientation team, headed by Mimi Blaurock. On Sunday, the seniors arrived, and everyone stayed busy all week with meetings, testing, picnics and receptions. Angles 5 ANGLES angle — the shape or space formed by two straight lines or plane surfaces that meet This year at the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics has been shaped by the two classes of juniors and seniors. Each group occupies a space here — a space governed by the planes that define it. Thus, each person’s experiences are some- what limited. But the space is also large enough to ensure diversity. This makes each person a special and unique part of this special and unique school. 6 Angles Angles 7 Hm FACETS facet — any of a number of sides or aspects, as of a person- ality People are the vital components of the special atmos- phere found at the N.C. School of Science and Mathemat- ics. Students, teachers, resident advisors, deans, secretar- ies and construction workers contribute to our “living and learning” experience. Each person adds a side or aspect to the school, and it is the combination of all the aspects that creates the unique entity that exists here. 8 Facets Facets 9 Seniors We are the Class of 1983, the middle child. Where is our place ? Not with the pioneers, the dear old seniors of 1982 . . . Not with the new juniors who live in the school ' s charted future. What are we? New seniors? Old juniors ? We are the Class of 1983, a strong and vital link in this continuing experiment in education. We were tem- pered by the first graduating class and with them helped chart the future of the school — our school. We were a part of the tremendous burst of growth and construction . We felt the harsh growing pains of the new year as we discov- ered our identity, an identity dissociated from the Class of of 1982. Is it any wonder that “our song ' is “Time Warp?” We are trapped between shifting attitudes and ideals. Yet our importance as part of this transition is unquestionable, and our impact on the vision is as firm as that of those who came before us and those who will follow us. 10 Facets Murray Alexander Abramson Robert Jeffrey Alexander Joe Elem Austin. Facets 39 LIGHTS light — - a form of radiant energy acting on the retina of the eye to make sight possible. A prism cannot function without light. Similarly, the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics cannot function without its light, the academic program. Guided by an unselfish devotion, the faculty radiates its knowledge and experiences to the school. This knowledge serves as the light which enhances our vision. This vision guides us to a brighter future. idamenlaJ Lights 4 1 42 Lights “History is the witness that testi- fies to the passing of time; it illu- mines reality, vitalizes memory, pro- vides guidance in daily life, and brings us tidings of antiquity,” — Cicero “The first law for the historian is that he shall never dare utter an un- truth. The second is that he shall suppress nothing that is true.” — Cicero Weeknight tutorials supplement class- room instruction with one-to-one review. As much as possible, each department tries to have a teacher on duty each night. Lights 4 3 44 Lights “It is not enough that you should understand about applied science in order that your work may increase man ' s blessings. Concerns for man himself and his fate must always form the chief interest of all technical endeavors, concern for the great unsolved problems of the organization of labor and the distribution of goods — in order that the creations of our mind shall be a blessing and not a curse to mankind. Never forget this in the midst of your diagrams and equations.” — Einstein Lights 45 “The man that hath no music in himself, nor is not mired with con- cord of sweet sounds, is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils; the motions of his spirit are dull as night, and his affections dark as Erebus: let no such man be trusted.” — Shakespeare 46 Lights Lights 47 “ ' Tis the good reader that makes the good book; in every book he finds passages with confidences or asides hidden from all else and unmistakably meant for his ear; the profit of books is according to the sensibility of the reader; the profoundest thought or passion sleeps as in a mine , until it is discovered by an equal mind and heart. ” — Ralph W. Emerson HP 48 Lights Lights 49 50 Lights Lights 5 I “The chess board is the world; the pieces are the phenomena of the universe ; the rules of the game are what we call the laws of Nature. The player on the other side is hidden from us. We know that his play is always fair, just and patient. But also we know, to our cost, that he never overlooks a mistake; or makes the smallest al- lowance for ignorance.” — T.H. Huxley 52 Lights Special Projects 1 1 Lights 53 SHAPES shape — the quality of a thing that depends on the rela- tive position of all points on its surface As a shape depends on the relative position of all points on its surface, sports at the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics depend on the dedication and determina- tion of all the players. Though not as intense as many other high schools, athletics play an important role, serv- ing as an outlet to help relieve the pressures of the aca- demic program. They provide opportunities for us, as high school students, to assemble and support our fellow students. The boundary of a shape encompasses a great deal — so do our sports. 54 Shapes Shapes 55 From the cellar to second place, Unicorns kindle school spirit. The success of the 1982 soccer team, which placed second in the conference, created cause for celebration at NCSSM. The Unicorns finished 7-3 this sea- son, which followed a 1-9 mark last season. Two of the losses this season were to Chapel Hill, one of the top-ranked teams in North Carolina. The victories came against W.F. Rolesviile, Durham High, Hillside and Vance. The 1982 Unicorns were coached by Kevin Bart- kovich. 56 Shapes Shapes S7 Runners set pace toward finish line. The name of the game is endur- ance, and the 1982 cross country teams proved that parking lot sprints and hilly marathons do in- crease athletic prowess. High- lights of the season included the girls’ second-place finish in the city-county meet and their third- place finish in the district. 58 Shapes Girls’ tennis serves, volleys to 5-6 season. The 1982 girls’ tennis team, coached by Bob Cox, placed 11th in district competition. The team’s six seeded players included three juniors and three seniors. Adrienne Gore earned the top seed in singles competition. I ! Shapes 59 Volleyball team spikes its way to court victories. After a dismal 0-9 performance a year ago, the girl’s volleyball team upped its record to 5-8 in 1982. The team captured wins against Cresset, Durham High, Vance, West Johnson and Cardinal Gibbons. Mi-Rita Reaves coached the volleyball team. 60 Shapes Rec league basketball This year the girls did not field an interscholas- tic team, but they did par- ticipate in recreational league play and finished second in the league. The girls were coached by Rick Fancher and Ogden Spruill. I rl Shapes 6 1 Basketball performance improves. 62 Shapes Confronted with its most challenging season ever, the NCSSM basketball team showed dedication to improving the caliber and consistency of its performance. Coached by John Pollinsand Larry Hartzell, the players’ efforts produced the best results yet, and in the process helped promote school spirit. Shapes 63 64 Shapes Shapes 65 66 Rays Softball Track Shapes 67 RAYS ray — any of several lines or elements radiating from a center Rays originate at a center location and individually radiate outward. All activities at the N.C. School of Sci- ence and Mathematics, like rays, have a common origin; they center around the school. Although they originat e at a central point, the activities here are as varied as the personalities and interests of the participants. Students use these differences to form organizations that not only reveal them as individuals but also join them together as groups. Hays 69 Durham community benefits through students’ talents. In one of the school’s efforts to repay the Durham community for its support of NCSSM, juniors participate in the Community Service Program, coordinated by Stephen Dovenitz. Students work an aver- age of three hours a week with such agencies as the Durham County Library and the Museum of Life and Science. This program enables the student participants to reap knowledge and memories, and it also gives these same benefits to the people and agencies that serve as their hosts. 70 Rays Lisa Gillespie assists children at Lenox Baker Hospital; Crystal Harden conducts tests for the Durham Water Authority; David Gray discusses current events with senior citizens. Rays 7 I Work service contributions fulfill many school needs. “A student work sendee program is neces- sary to maintain the grounds, buildings and various program functions of the school. Con- tributions of time and energy provide not only a financial benefit to the school and ultimately to the students, but permit a sense of communal involvement which creates a bond between those participating and their environment.” — The Work Service Program: Participant Handbook lit Rays Coordinated by RA Tom Boddie, the work service program includes various assignments for students. Some have semester duty on the grounds crew or in the cafeteria, while others have yearlong duties as tutors, office workers, library aides, yearbook and newspaper editors, mail sorters, message deliverers and SAB mem- bers. Dorm assistants also receive work service credit. Rays 73 74 Rays Rays 75 Services Various service programs at NCSSM contribute to stu- dent activities. Some are re- quired or necessary; others are optional. Guidance ser- vices include ICL classes for juniors, testing and college applications. Housing ser- vices, coordinated by Ogden Spruill, include the game room. Student Store and the snack bar. 76 Rays 55t HNO . — Ig fern ill Srii rmri pa if Food services began the year off campus, and no one will soon forget walking to E.K. Powe three times a day for meals. As sponsor of social events for the school community, the Student Activities Board offered many programs both on and off campus. Among the highlights were van runs to the malls, dances, coftee houses, Mr. Unicorn pageant, pizza parties, Spirit Week, Halloween haunted house, holiday decorating contest, State Fair trip, bonfires and movies. RAs Gary Gelo and Susan Hyatt served as advis- ers to the board. 80 Rays Rays 81 82 Rays Rays 83 84 Rays s J Several programs on campus promote physical fitness for students. All juniors take physical activ- ities classes coordinated by Branson Brown. In- tramurals, headed by Steve Branson, include bas- ketball, board and card games, flag football and volleyball to name a few. In addition, the new weight room provides training opportunities for athletic team members and other individuals. Rays 85 Student Council In addition to holding weekly meetings, the Student Council initi- ates activities to boost morale and school pride. Round table discus- sions and the infamous “Kiss the Pig” contest were two of the most successful ones. Under the leader- ship of Dhruva Sen, president, the Student Council also directed stu- dent input on issues such as senior privileges and intervisitation. 86 Rays This year a few organizations have distinguished themselves. During Black History Month, the Gospel Chorus and mem- bers of the Race Relations Committee presented an as- sembly on the history of Black America. In competition, the Quiz Bowl and Speech and De- bate teams captured numerous awards. John Fox and Steve West excelled as the school ' s debate duo. Other students re- hearsed many hours in prepara- tion for a performance of The Fantastiks. Rays 87 88 Rays Numerous specialty clubs at NCSSM provided a wide range of extracurricular activities. Among these, the math and chess clubs gave enjoyable challenges outside the class- room, while the outing and pep clubs promoted physical fitness and school spirit. And for the “ultimate” challenge, some played with a frisbee. Rays 89 campus hangouts” 66 90 Rays AUNT SUES CPI CE HAM. SAUSAGE BISCUITS COTEEE. f CE CPE AM. b All students feel the need to get away at times, and early in the year they discover places to go within walking distance. Aunt Sue’s, Northgate Mall, Revco and Ninth Street are among stu- dent’s favorite “Hang- outs”. With these conve- nient locations, it’s diffi- cult to imagine what NCSSM student S would do without them. Rays 91 SPECTRA spectrum — a series of colored bands diffracted and arranged in order of their respective wave lengths by passage of white light through a prism White light enters a prism and is diffracted into a spectrum. Likewise, the residential environment acts as a prism on the students of the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics. The prism acts on each student, creating a colorful spectrum of personalities. Residential living provides opportunities for the blending of personalities into new hues, which in turn allow the spectrum to grow. 92 Spectra Spectra 93 At NCSSM, home away from home existed in five residence halls — Beall, Bryan, Hill, Wyche and Reynolds. Here we faced the ups and downs of day-to-day living. The delayed opening of the cafeteria gave us three choices: go hungry, trek to E.K. Powe or order a pizza. The latter became a popular option. We also were forced to tolerate jackhammers at 7 a.m., faulty and frequent fire alarms, small rooms, no hot water and alot of rules. Yet for most of us, the good times outweighed the bad, and we made friendships we’d always cherish. 94 Spectra Spectra 95 96 Spectra Residence Hall Rap sessions with the RAs and dates with the video games provide recreation and relaxation during those treasured mo- ments of “free time.” Spectra 97 Dorm rooms weren’t always messy, as twice a week we had to pass room inspection. 98 Spectra ' .r ?
