Everytime a productive student has left this university to take his or her place in our work- ing society you have given credit to the late James Shepard and this institution, North Carolina Central University. I am the backbone behind Mr. Shepard and this university. I am the Spirit of the Eagle ! With the founding of this university by Mr. Shepard I have turned my attention from flying aimlessly at night to try- ing to help people. I have chosen to gather high school graduates from nations like Africa, Cuba, South America, etc. I have chosen graduates from states like New Jersy, New York, North and South Carolina, Florida, etc. I have chosen graduates from cities such as Charlotte, Fayetteville, Durham and even smaller cities such as Tin City. The assumption is that people from New York could tell others about riots and pimps, while the country crowd could tell them about cropping tobacco and what it means to have a monkey on your row. My exchange program is work- ing nicely also. After my guinea pigs have gathered here 1 add 2 teaspoons full of brute spectator sports. From September to Oc- tober I encourage my specimens to watch the football team in action; the moral of the lesson is to teach tackling future conflicts head-on. After my guinea pigs have simmered in this environment for 2 months, I add four pinches of creative spectator sports. From October to February I allow my basketball players to run and gun, I encourage teamwork and school pride in both sports. I even allow my specimens to give pep rallies before home games. My most important ingredient is a cup of knowledge. I order all of my people leaders to really get my specimens to study. No field of endeavor is closed to them. If they want to study law, biology, sociology, nursing, or anything they desire. I encourage them to study hours on end at night and rise before morning classes to study some more. I fully realize that guinea pigs must have some sort of outlet and I provide movies. I allow musicians to perform concerts. I allow my students to participate in plays and organize dances. I provide a dash of culture. The Ebony Fashion Show and the William O ' Farrow Art Exhibit are two of my major accomplishments. If the coronation of Miss N.C.C.CJ. isn ' t culture then grits ain ' t grocery. Black people must never forget where they came from and who helped them over their stumbling blocks. I let them celebrate Martin Luther King ' s birthday on January 15. I let them have a Black History Week from February 6-10. I even let them have a Founder ' s Day program in November. My last ingredient is a teaspoon full of the future. On October 17, job interviews begin at the Career Counseling and Placement Bureau. I even allow a task force of graduated students to come back and give the less fortunate ad- vice. On February 14, I ' m allowing Tom Jackson to lecture on Guerilla Tactics in the Job Market. In conclusion, whether the students, yourself, or your staff members realize it or not I made you and I can destroy you. Prepare to give credit where credit is due or be prepared to meet your Maker. Sincerely yours, Spirit of the Eagle M H M M E M M M M M M M M M M M M M M M hi M I H P M $$ M M M w M M I M M M ffl M M M M m M if M M M H M The EAGLE The Eagle Yearbook staff is responsible for publishing a book sumarizing the activities and events that occur on (North Carolina Central University ' s campus during a school year. Ex Umbra is Latin for out of the shadows. This name was chosen because the members of the organization feel that the creative students at NCCU are too much in the shadows, and they need to be brought out into the light where their fellow students can recognize and enjoy their work. Ex Gmbra expresses this idea. Gloria Tyson Editor of Ex Gmbra Glenwood Davis Bus. Mgr. CAMPUS ECHO The purpose of the Campus Echo is to build pride that is the basis of school spirit; to interpret the newsworthy events in the life of this institution; and to provide a medium of expression for students interested in writing for publication. As we all know, Socrates said, Know Thyself. I ' d like to say, Know thyself, express thyself and through writing, perhaps others will learn themselves. iii iiiiiiiiiwiiiiiii ' iini i| ' minimi ' ■ ' ■• ' J l, 1 lJJ llll MIJL l l l MJI J yi ll , MI O l . l .l. The eagles suffered through one of their worst seasons in the history of the institution. However, all was not lost, as there were out- standing performances by three athletes — Reginald Smith, Joseph Mack and Walter Odom. Each was selected to the All MEAC Conference Team. Smith, a diminutive 5-6 wide receiver, was tied with Mack with 34 receptions this year for the conference lead. Mack was selected for the second straight year as the most outstanding tight end in the conference. Odom, a 6-1 middle linebacker, led the Eagles in tackles and was considered by many the best linebacker in the conference. The season started off with the Eagles drop- ping a 14-10 decision to Virginia Union when the Panthers scored in the final minutes at O ' Kelly Stadium. The following week the Eagles squeaked past the Vikings of Elizabeth City State 13-6. They then journeyed to Winston-Salem State and lost a heartbreaking game 2 11 3 when an intended pass to Joe Mack was ruled incomplete in the end zone on the Eagles ' final possession. Following a week ' s layoff, the Eagles returned to O ' Kelly Stadium to host Morgan State. They exhibited their most potent offensive show of the year — racking up 290 yards passing and 160 yards rushing, but it wasn ' t enough as the Bears recovered from a 19-17 deficit to win 35-25. It was all downhill from this point. The Eagles lost to Elon 50-8, Delaware State (Homecoming) 23-0, Maryland-Eastern Shore 14-6, South Carolina State 45-12, Johnson C. Smith 18-16, Howard 33-0 and A T 25-6. till ' • J c?-a? £ S « Si • Sfir FOOTBALL NCCCJ Virginia Union 14 10 Elizabeth City State 6 13 Winston-Salem State 21 13 Morgan State 35 25 Elon 50 8 Delaware State (Homecoming) 23 Maryland Eastern Shore 14 6 South Carolina State 45 12 Johnson C. Central is a center of challenges and achieve- ments which provides for an increase in knowledge. Pride has also constituted one of the major stimulates in student life. Students, liberals and conservatives, are constantly working together to improve themselves, the university and univer- sity community. In recent years, the administration and the stu- dent body have established a strong plane of com- munication and progress has been inevitable. We are beginning to hear the alarms of our society and we are awakening from a world of ignorance and il- lusion. We are beginning to realize the effec- tiveness of collectively organizing and struggling toward common goals. We are beginning to respect each other and help each other. We are beginning to manifest a long due self-pride and pride in our rich heritage. The motto is Service to Humanity . The Sorority is an organization of registered nurses and nursing students pursuing their education in this field. It has made me realize many things about myself, my friends, and students of North Carolina Central University. I have encountered animosity, loneliness, dis- trust, and desertion, but all have made me the deepest bit stronger. I have found out that it takes more than just a good staff to produce a yearbook. A publication of this caliber takes guidance, endeavor, a belief in one ' s self, perseverance and uplift, all of which have to come from within the soul; And I thank God for providing me with an unconquerable soul, but nothing I did not anticipate. I would like to thank my fellow staff members who stuck with me through the thick and the thin of it all, for you deserve more than I can ever give you. To Patsy Watts and Glenwood Davis, I thank you for your administrative guidance and to my fraternity brothers, members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., I thank you for providing your hands, hearts, and brotherly love in helping me in every way. In closing, I would like to wish the continuing students of North Carolina Central University the best of luck in their future en- deavors and peace. To the incoming editor of the next publication, I would like to wish him or her good luck, and NEXT. Wilbert Williams Editor-in-Chief Let the achiever company show you how to meet your goals.
