Blue Magic, Roy Ayers ' Ubiquity, and Grover Washington and his Band performed to the satisfaction of the crowd. The gym was pacl ed with students and non-students both feeling the vibrations from the show. Saturday night, the gym was jammed agian with people getting down with Sun, Brother to Brother, and the New Central Connection Unlimited. Although, most Eagles were disappointed with the outcome of the game. Homecoming reached its peak with the outstanding shows sponsored by the SGA. Everyone got off at the Eagle ' s Nest. 1 PA R A D E 7 6 Reflections Of You «■■■ Sleek and sassy, cool and smooth, elegant and chic. So went the reactions to the Fashion Show which was held as one of the Home- coming Festivities. Never before had so many NCCU students looked so cosmopolitan and debonaire. The models were equals to those of the Ebony Fashion Fair, showing the same grace and style. And styling they were. From swimwear to lingerie, from evening wear to leisure wear, from leathers to furs. Wearing mean brims, carrying sleek umbrellas, stepping in platforms, shining and glittering. That was the smoking Eagle Fashion Show. The homecoming festivities at the Eagle ' s nest were jolted when the Hawks of the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore flew into EAGLELAND and defeated the NCCU football team. The Eagles, in their splendid MAROON GRAY scored first and the crowd sat back anticipating a fulfilling homecoming- victory. However, in the second quarter, the Hawks scored and took the lead. Still fighting for victory, the Eagle team rose and scored again to take the lead. However, for the second time, the point after touchdown was no good. The Eagles scored once again and accumulated a grand total of 19 points. Then the Hawks flew in for two more scores and a grand total of 21 points. Thus, the mighty Eagles had to settle for a shatter- ing defeat at the hands of UMES Hawks. EAGLES VS. ' _ 2£ C ditox J zcLLcaiio n During the course of one ' s collegiate life, there sometimes appears a guiding light. That light serves as a strong supportive force which can influence the life of a student greatly. There are students on this campus who have been fortunate enough to come face to face with a guiding light and thus emerge as stronger and more intelligent individuals. Three such guiding lights are Dr. Leroy T. Walker, Dr. James F. Blue, and Mr. Caulbert A. Jones. To these men, the 1977 EAGLE is dedicated. DR. JAMES F. BLUE serves North Carolina Central University as its Dean of Students. He received his B.S. from North Carolina A T State University. He received his M. Ed. and Ph. D. from the University of North Carolina. DEAN as he is affectionately called, first came to NCCU in 1963 as an instructor of Physical Education. During his tenure here, he has served as an advisor to the Student Government Association, EAGLE Yearbook, Physical Education Majors ' Club, and academic advisor to Freshmen Physical Ed. majors. DR. BLUE ' S community activities include posi tions as NCCU ' s representative for Boy Scouts of America, a member of the NAACP, co-founder of the NCCU Booster ' s Club, and NCCU ' s chairman of the United Fund, just to name a few. It is this type of continuous service to others w hich makes DR. JAMES F. BLUE a valuable asset to the Eagle community. It is often rare when college students can boast of knowing and being taught by a leg end. The name, LEROY T. WALKER is synonomous with the word legend. He served as the Head Coach of the USA Olympic Track and Field Team during the most recent games in Montreal, Canada. Dr. Walker has also coached Olympic track teams from Ethiopia and Israel as well as serving as a consultant to Olympic teams from Kenya, Trinidad and Jamaica. Dr. Walker has also organized and coordinated International track meets such as the USA-Pan African Meet, the USA-USSR meet and the USA-Pan Africa-Germany track meet. He has been honored as Track coach of the Year by numerous organizations. In 1975, Dr. Walker was elected to the N.C. Hall of Fame. Doc , as he is called by many, graduated from Benedict College. He then received his M.A. from Columbia University and his Ph.D. from New York University. In 1945, after coach- ing at Prairie View State, Bishop College and Benedict College, Dr. Walker came to NCCU. Between 1945 and 1973, he coached basketball, footbal l and track. He also served as Chair- man of the Physical Education department. It was Dr. Walker who built the NCCU track team into one with numerous All- Americans of National prominence. On May 14, 1976, Dr. Walker was awarded the Oliver Max Gardner Award which is the only statewide honor given by the Board of Governors of the UNC. MR. CAULBERT A. JONES joined the faculty of NCCU at the invitation of Dr. James E. Shepard in September, 1947. He served the university as asso- ciate professor of history until June, 1976, when he retired. Mr. Jones graduated from Howard University and received his M.A. at Columbia University. During his tenure here at NCCU, Mr. Jones was advisor to more than fifty student organizations. Among them were EAGLE Yearbook, 1952 and 1955; Baptist Student Union, three years; NAACP College Chapter, three years; Phi Alpha Theta, Founder and advisor for twenty six years; Student Government, ten years; Foreign Students Association, four years; Student Legislative Assembly, five years; African Students Association, two years. Mr. Jones also served as an advisor to the Sophomore, Junior and Senior Classes. The C. A. Jones History and Social Science Club is appropiately named after him. In January, Mr. Jones died as the result of a heart attack. The world has truly lost a magnificent scholar as well as a most inspiring educator. Those students who had the opportunity to be taught by this man will not soon forget him. CAMPUS ACTIVITIES Nikki Giovanni signs autograph for NCCU students Ms. Giovanni spealts in B.N. We are with one another sometimes and there are no smiles no easy togetherness only one and one against the grain we speak sometimes and nothing is said but where we are apart there is longing and pain like arguments within ourselves that will not end. ■n in wiiiifTfiiTi«¥ma TnnnT ' niwiTWlfll LOVE SONG Beloved, I have to adore the earth; The wind must have heard Your voice once. Stephenson, Christine Street, Robert The Way We Were On August 25, 1973, I arrived at North Carolir:a Central University a little apprehensive of vi hat would occur, glad to be away from home, frightened, confused, and determined not to ask anyone for anything, for fear that I would look like I was out-of-place. I felt that I had to go to every party; if I missed one, I would be considered tired. Therefore, I bumped everynight to the records of Funky Stuff , and Ecstasy . I met a dude at the Elk ' s lodge and he was really something. Everynight I ' d get off with Barry White ' s I ' ve got so much to give. Now, It ' s time for me to leave (hopefully). Good-bye to the good times and the bad. Oxs- land There ' s a simple fact about life insurance that a lot of people ignore: the longer you wait to buy it, the higher the premiums will be. By buying young, you can get better cov- erage, pay less, and build up cash values early in life. This is money you can use to help send your children to college, help make the down payment on a new home, or help with any other important goal in life. But the best time to start is right now. And the best person to get started with is your North Carolina Mutual agent. Think young. Give us a call. NORTH CAROLINA MUTUAL LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY LET ' S GET WORKING ON TOMORROW.
