BOARD OF TRUSTEES: Appointed by the State ' s chief executive, the Board of Trustees is the govern- ing body of North Carolina College along w ith Presi- dent Whiting. They meet monthly and consider the constantly changing and progressing entity that is N.C.C. Chaired by Bascom Baynes who held that post for more than a decade. The state legislature granted its request for funds to build a new chem- istry building, now in progress and a student union building, nearing completion, and made provisions for extending the college ' s acreage to provide room for the college ' s full growth potential. Edmonds Dean of the Graduate School The Graduate School of North Carolina College extends con- gratulations to the students of 1967-1968. The program of graduate offerings encompass the degrees of Master of Arts m Education, English. French, History, Music, Psychology and Sociology; the Master of Science in Biology, Chemistry. Com- merce, Home Economics, Mathematics, and Physical Education; and the Master of Education for those students majoring in Elementary Education. In this era of excellence in education, your academic pre- paration will determine your future in life. Commit yourselves to the personal venture m higher education. North Carolina Col- lege must be your favorite graduate school. Examine for your- self in the Graduate Office all aid and assistance which you may expect to receive. History Graduate Assoc. Music A Tribute Dr, William Harrison Brown served North Carolina College and the na- tion with distinction from 1949 when he joined the college ' s faculty until his death in Lincoln Hospital on February 6. 1968. He was a native of Atlanta. Georgia and a graduate of Atlanta University with B.A. and M.S. degrees. His Ph.D. degree was earned at Ohio State University. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa honorary society; Omega PsI Phi fraternity; the National Education Association; the North Carolina Teachers Association; the American Educational Research Association; the American Association of University Professors; the National Associa- tion for Research in Science Teaching; and the National Society for the Study of Education. After joining the North Carolina College faculty, Dr. Brown served in several capacities; Director of the Bureau of Educational Research. 1949- 1957; Dean of the Graduate School. 1958-1964; Member of the Interim Administrative Committee that managed the affairs of the college in the absence of a president. 1966-67; Director of the Office of Research and Evaluation. 1967-1968. Throughout his tenure at North Carolina College, Dr. Brown held the rank of professor m the Department of Education. Not only was Dr. Brown a scholar, but he was an extensive author. It is impossible for us to list all his publications, but we are limited to list a few of them; A Task for Negro Science Teachers. Opportunity Journal of Negro Life. A Critical Study of Secondary Education for Negroes In Georgia. Abstract. Ph.D. Dissertation. Vocational Aspirations of Seniors at North Carolina College: A Follow-Through Study. A devoted husband to all who knew him, he was a great force for good in the community, and this whole area is diminished by his loss. He was a pioneer in the day that is slowly breaking in the south.
