Life Behind The Gates of Knowledge We enter the Gates of Knowledge at North Carolina College to gather learning in all fields of Education, Communication, Religion and Recreation. Through these gates, the unforgettable scenes of the verdant greens are caught and held in the memories of NCC students. The verdant greens at North Carolina College have come to have a special significance for NCC students just as the beauty of the changing seasons, the sweet magnolias and the tall pines. ' Mr. Robert J. Brown Qnew memberb 27 President Samuel P. Massie A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF NORTH CAROLINA COLLEGE TO STUDENTS, FACULTY, STAFF, ALUMNI, AND FRIENDS OF NORTH CAROLINA COL- LEGE: I am pleased to extend greetings and best wishes to all of you. We are in the midst of an educational, social, and economic revolution. As men everywhere seek to rid themselves of mankind's three ancient enemies-ignorance, proverty, and disease- education is recognized as the keystone. The plans of our nation's Great Society are based largely upon greatly expanded educational opportunities for all peoples as reflected in the High- er Education Act, the Anti-Poverty Bill, the Voting Rights Act, and other historic acts of the 89th Congress. North Carolina College is in the midst of this great revolution. Everywhere on campus one sees and feels the signs of progress and change, e. g. the new Honor House, revised curricula programs, increased student responsibilities, new Buildings, increased faculty and student activi- ties, newer and more plentiful job opportunties, and increased participation in world affairs. In participating fully in this revolution, North Carolina College, like other colleges, is main- taining, in addition to excellent facilities and equipment, a competent and creative faculty and staff, inspired students who are eager to learn, loyal alumni, and generous friends. We invite all of you to join us in our continued quest for academic excellence and achievement. I congratulate the EAGLE staff on this fine yearbook. I wish all of you Well. ' I believe is what they shout. And while they sit in their frat houses, not knowing or caring what it's all about. We die in this foreign land while they sit at home and shout. But they do have it kind of rough, this I must concede. I know I would be dismayed at one of them trading places with me. They'll probably ask, 'How do we know?' Well, a lot of us have been to college before, And after we get out of this war we'll probably return once more. But I guess they think we like it here, that this was our own choice. But if not for fighting this war we too might be 'college boys'. I think what they need, and this I say with regret, is to fight over here with us, And see their friends in misery and death, See those who cannot see, the crippled, their bodies shattered by war's device. Then this might suffice. So college boys, go ahead and lie in the streets. Hang on to our trains and ships and if you want, hang onto Mama's skirt and cry a little bit. Education is great for those who pick and choose it. But with all this education, it seems like they would use it. QViet Namj CV1et Naml I don't think anyone wants to see home any worse than us. College boys, your harrassment we can do without, your sympathy we don't want. While we talk of raids, you talk of packing phone booths and the girls you've met. While we just sweat and die, for your concern. Just picket, scream and yell, and all your draft cards burn. We do not have wires and phones. All we have is a faith in God, our prayers, to each his own. If Uncle Sam should call, just you stick to your pizza and beer. Do all you can to stay home, because We don't want you over here. Just one last appropriate saying-I believe it has been used over and over again. Leave the crying to the babies, and the fighting to the men. Composed. by: Pfc. Norman A. Enable us to put off sham and pretense. Be patient with any of us who still prefer vain shows and empty pride to the freedom and security of thy Truth. As a political figure takes office, so must he vacate it. It has been my honor, my pleasure, and my challenge to as- cend to the Presidency, and it is now my task to step down. In some ways it is easy, and in other ways difficult. I have relished every moment that I have had to serve. I only wish that I could have done more. The quest for excellence is not a single battle. It is a struggle, unending. It is a challenge that must be constantly renewed. It is a victory, never quite won. These thoughts characterize my feelings, not only about Student Govern- ment, but about college and education, and about all that is worth striv- ing for. To you I pass on the torch because I have, for better or worse, run my stretch of this particular journey. Each future generation of Eagles must carry the torch on, and on, and on .... Edmonds Mr. William Jones, Chairman The old order changeth, giving place to new. -Kipling As We go to the publishers we are without a Presi- dent. We were placed in this situation on January 19, by the resignation of Dr. Samuel P. Massie, as President of North Carolina College. At this time an interim committee was appointed, headed by Mr. William Jones, North Carolina College Business Manager, as chairman. Other members of the committee are Dr. Helen G. Edmonds, dean of the graduate school, and Dr. William H. Brown, professor of education, and former dean of the graduate school. The job of the interim committee is to perform the duties of the presidency until a new administrator is found. We offer these persons our utmost consideration and cooperation in continued progress in the absence of a president. We are waiting hopefully for the appointment of a person who is student oriented, and who can please the faculty and staff as well. Since in the past the president has been chosen solely by the superiors, maybe in the choice of our fourth president the students will be given some voice, since a president should be mainly for the students. In this way the ideal of the Student Government Association concerning having someone on the interim committee who works directly with the undergraduate body might be met. However, if this ideal is not met, in the words of the S. G. A. We shall continue to cooperate with college authorities and to seek the best interests of the students and the college. jaa 206 VISITGRS 44' Dr. Bejamin Quarles, Professor of History at Morgan State College, addressed the forum during Negro History Week. 2 3 5 1 ,ohfvgi f Miss Lily Kurian, right, visits the campus from Kerela State, India. ,e of F F45 by 4? College, has proved to be a successful venture during this school year. The Honor House which . houses senior women has given its residents the opportunity to grow morally, scholastically, and socially. We, the residents of the Honor House, hope that this idea of giving women students the opportunity to live under an honor system will continue to grow on our campus. 210 MARINETTE EXCHANGE PROGRAM My ,I The Marinette Exchange Program is an arrangement whereby two students from the University of Wiscon- sin's Marinette County Center attend North Carolina College for one semester and two North Carolina College Students attend Marinette for the same length of time. The Exchange began in September, 1965, with the arrival at NCC of Miss Jane Liljestrand and Miss Patricia Thompson from Marinette. It will continue during the second semester with Miss Mamie Alston and Miss Ferne Thorpe attending Marinette. It is hoped that this arrangement will be a pilot program for a much larger exchange with the entire Wisconsin system. Plans to expand the program are already being worked out. Nine Sophomore women applied for the Exchange. QThe program was limited to the Sophomore women because of the curriculum and housing conditions at Marinette.J The two finalists were selected by a com- mittee of Faculty and Students. The students pay the same expenses for tuition and fees as they would pay at their home institution. They pay room and board at the host institution in accordance with the scales prevailing there. Transportation be- tween schools is provided by the home institution. The North Carolina College students are provided trans- portation by funds from the Doris Duke Foundation. Dr. Ceceil Patterson is the director of this program. CORONATIO M SS N.C.C. Veronica Tucker st. iQ ,::. N . Telephone 682-I I 33 or 682-I I 34 81 4 Fayetteville Street Durham North Carolina LITTLE HELP PLEASE! The North Carolina College Eagle yearbook is a student publication which is entirely formulated, written, and designed by students. The ma- jority of it is unsalaried. The Work is tedious, demanding, and often re- quires that the members work late hours, even though they have to abide by the same dormitory curfew and carry the same academic load that you do. Beset by trials and tribulations the Eagle staff is also plagued by a lack of campus cooperation. Many times when the staff sets up schedules for taking pictures of clubs and organizations these groups do not come on time or they fail to appear at all. Then, when their pictures do not appear in the book or there is some error in the name of the club or some club members do not appear with the group the yearbook editors or the advisor is confronted with complaints and criticisms. Along with this lack of campus cooperation, the Eagle staff is forced to work in an office which is too small to accommodate all of the workers, and lacks adequate storage for the materials. Without the utmost consideration We cannot give you the type of year book that the staff desires to have published, and that you should like to have. We are soliciting everyone's help!! This publication belongs to North Carolina College, not to thirty or forty members of the staff. A little co- operation would go a long way towards making the staff happier, and more willing to serve the North Carolina College community. Helpllllll 234 SENIOR DIRECTORY A Allen, Marion J. P. O.
