DUKE AUDITORIUM NORTH CAROLINA COLLEGE DURHAM JM a y , Ty 4 5 NNIE DAY SHEPAB The marvelous advantages of education and well-being that we enjoy today were once mere visions dimly conceived. Today, with abundant evidence of the disseminating growth of these pioneer conceptions, a true sense of gratefulness moves us to reflect on the lives of those who have assisted in transforming these dreams into realities. In this mood, the Echo Staff is instinctively minded of Mrs. Annie Day Shepard, the wife of our President, who before her illness, persistently proved herself an ardent devotee of the students of this institution. The interest taken by Mrs. Shepard in all phases of student activities, and her unselfish loyalty and devotion to the school in its early years of develop- ment, are but few examples of unstinted devotion in the building of our institution as it stands today. Most affectionately, then, we humbly dedicate this book to one whose life has been and will always be an inspiration to us. This is the way America does things. Out of this concerted action however, American designers, engineers and craftsmen have learned many new ways to further raise the standard of living here in the U. S. A. This is particularly true in the home furnishings industry, and when this industry has been converted back to peacetime manufacturing, all of us will marvel at the new furniture creations. Furniture made of glass, plastics, new ways of treating and coloring wood, new and stronger glues. In fact, there is no end to the future possibilities of manufacturing in the field of furniture. The firm of Christian-Harward as always will keep abreast of these changing conditions, and we look forward with keen interest toward the continuance of fine customer relations which has existed through the years. At North Carolina College the traditions of good sportsmanship, self-sacrifice for team and school, fairness shown to opponents and arbitrers, hard aggressive clean conduct under competi- tion have steamed from athletic participants and from student spectatorship at contests wherein these attributes are practiced at all times under strain and under the lack of it. For twenty years, since the time when the title was first applied to the sports aggregations repre- senting North Carolina College, the title " Eagles " and " Sportsmanship at all Times " has been syn- onymous. The adage " might makes right " has been reversed to " right makes might " and with it has come from all opponents the highest respect for the mighty " Eagles. " The practice of right through individual team, and crowd fair play has gained for the backers of the Maroon and Gray the right to pride in victory and lack of humilia- tion in defeat. This practice has given strength to the truth, that there is no defeat in a game well played. There is no defeat in the loss of victory whenever the prize is fought for in severe and fair attempt and where adherence to right is re- ligious and unswerving. So hail the " Eagles, " builders of traditions, seekers of victory through excellence, symbols of might through right, of power through fight, of glory through difficulty, of immortality through the practice of undying principles and ideals. The Eagle " dwelleth and abideth on the rock Upon the crag of the rock And in the strong place. " (Job 39:18 i John B. McLendon, Coach AUTOGRAPHS ”
