COMMANDING OFFICER Commander William J. Longhi, USN Commander Longhi, a native of Lansford, Pennsylvania, is a 1951 graduate of the Uni- versity of Notre Dame, which he attended as a regular NROTC student. Upon graduation and commissioning, he was assigned to USS TURNER QDDR-8349, where he remained for three years in a variety of junior officer bil- lets, including a year as Gunnery Officer. During his tour, Turner took part in three Mediterranean deployments. f K " 4 ff In July, 1954, Commander Longhi took com- mand of USS BUNTING QAMS-37, acoastal minesweeper, which during his command was converted and redesignated as a minehunter QMHC-459. He remained in command of USS BUNTING until August, 1956, when he began the Command Communications course at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. Upon grad- uation in June, 1958, he was assigned to USS MACON fCA-1325 as Communications Officer. He remained aboard USS MACON until she began her decommissioning in November, 1960, having participated in a Mediterranean cruise, a South American cruise, and Operation Inland Sea through the Great Lakes. After a tour of duty in OPNAV, in the Communications Plans and Policy Branch, Commander Longhi returned to destroyer duty in April, 1963, as executive officer of USS JOSEPH P, KENNEDY. While aboard USS KENNEDY, he returned to the Mediterranean for his fifth tour with the Sixth Fleet. A He attended the Armed Forces Staff College . from January, 1965, until June, and was then I assigned to duty on the staff of Commander in Chief, U.S. Naval Forces in Europe, as Communications Operations, Plans and Read- iness Officer. During this tour he also served, on an additional duty basis,on the staff of Commander in Chief, Europe, as the U.S, member of the Allied Naval Communications Agency, a NATO organization dealing with all aspects of naval communications. He remained in London until October, 1968, when he took command of USS NORRIS. Commander Longhi is married to the former Mary Anne Barry of Charleston, South Carolina. They have 'three children: William, Catherine Mary, and Michael, all of whom attend the Cluny School in Newport.
