Zlyillmcuf Of Dreams Peop1e's highest of ambitions and desires are to fulfill dreams of happiness, fame, and fortune. Only by constant work and study can we obtain these much sought after dreams and plans. We must fol- low three rules to enrich our dreams of the future: work hard, follow the golden rule, and give credit to whom credit is due. Knowledge and understanding are the greatest assets to assist us in obtaining dreams. 8 In Our Diligcut Search 9or Knowledge Seniors working on float Cooking hot dogs for football game. Senior stand. For our class officers we elected: Richard Hamilton, President, C.M. Awalt, Vice President, Peggy Farris, Secretary, and Barbara South, Treasurer. During that year we had afreshmen basketball team backed by the cheerleaders. We entered our sophomore year with more confi- dence in ourselves in many ways. Our efficient class officers were Melvin Douglas, President, Bob Russell, Vice President, Connie Dillsworth, Secretary, and Emma Lou Orr, Treasurer. During that year we began looking forward to the Senior Trip. We engaged in many profitable projects tc earn money for this trip. We were representec both in sports and cheerleading. Our sophomore year proved to be most successful. A jolly set of juniors entered N.C.H.S. in 1957 and looked forward to a year full of worth-while activi- ties: sports, the Junior Play, and leadership in or- ganizations. For class officers we elected Melvin Douglas, President, Richard Hamilton, Vice Presi- dent Connie Dillsworth, secretary, and Bob Russell, Treasurer. This was a prosperous year for the juniors. In our last year we are faced with new activities to attain the Senior Trip and hard studying to graduate, but even so we are gaining pleasure in doing them. We have elected capable senior officers: Pat Marlin, President, Brenda Hill, Vice President, Jeannie Carter,Secretarygand Carldeane Phelps, Treasurer. We are again represented in every field of all or- ganizations. We are trying to prove that we are sophisticated seniors, yet in an unsophisticated way. The Student Council has completed another successful year as the student governing body. It acts as a strong link between the administration and the students. Their year has been made successful because they have worked hard and have had the cooperation of the students in everything that they have tried to do. This year the Norris City Council was well represented in the area by Sue Bryant, Treasurer. At this annual district meeting she was elected to the office of Treasurer. Trudie Kirk, President, and Bonnie Browning attended the State Convention which was held in Chicago. The all school party was the main social event sponsored by the Council this year. A faculty tea was another event sponsored by the council and designed to improve student -faculty relationship. 46 First Row: Mary Linda Golden, Ann Venters, Carolyn Johnson, Marianna Bishop, Donna Applegate, Phyllis Gidcumb, Carol Haddock, Brenda Brooks. The organization is known throughout the world for its spectacular work in helping young men lead a cleaner, healthier, and more enjoyable way of life. Each year new members get a chance to meet other people, to learn about their problems and how they solve them, and to take part in summer workshops, rallies, and district meetings. Our group, sponsored by Mr. Blackman, has some sixteen members this year. The activities include participation in workshops, rallies, outings that are held in the spring, and a banquet which is held on the night of initiation. The financial problem is solved by the Hi -Y hat -check stand, which is operated at all home basketball games. This money is deposited in the club treasury and drawn upon Whenever necessary. 48 First Row: Sue Austin, Wilma Spence, Clara Johnson, Lena May Spence, Betty Griffith. The F.B.L.A. organization is sponsored by our commercial teacher, Miss White. The purpose of the club is to develop competent, aggressive business leadership, to create an interest in different busi- ness occupations, to encourage members to improve the home and community, and to improve and es- tablish standards for careers in store and office occupations. Requirement of membership in F.B.L.A. is enrollment in at least one commercial class. The club selected a fine group of officers to serve during the year. They were Caroline Herron, Presidentg Stella Catlin, Vice-President, Kay Lane, Se- cretary, and Treasurer. At the beginning of the year several new students joined the club. The major activity for the club this year was to edit a school paper THE CARDINAL CHIRP. This project en- abled many students to work together. The money made from the sale of the paper was used for F.B. L.A.parties andother activities. The club was also responsible for presentingtwo assembly programs, one each semester. 50 First Row: Jimmy Campbell, Freeman Johnson, Bobby Jann, Donnie Williams, James Isaac, Ronnie Tarrant, Everett Howard, Tommy Gholson. Future Farmers of America is an organization, founded in 1928 by Henry C. Groseclose. Their first national president was Leslie Applegate. Since then F.F.A. chapters and organizations have been ex- tended throughout the 48 states, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii. It has become one of the largest organiza- tions of its kind, numbering around ten to twelve thousand members per state. The F.F.A. motto is as follows: Learning to do. Doingto learn. Earning to live. Living to serve. The main objectives are to develop competent, aggressive, rural, and agriculture leadership, to strengthenthe confidence of farm boys and young men in themselves and their work, and to develop character, to train for useful citizen- ship, and to foster patriotism. A member must be enrolled in vocational agriculture, be of high school age, and have a satisfactory farming program. The first Norris City F.F.A. chapter receivedits char- ter March 22, 1938. At that time there were only eighteen members, but now have forty-five. This or- ganization participates in such contests as grain, livestock, soil judging, andparliamentary procedure. The school editions are looked forward to by students in high schools over the entire United States. Many countries do not enjoy the independent and battle -scarred right of "freedom of the press." Of course, without this, there can be no non-censored publically owned newspapers, let alone any student sponsored leaf- lets. The Norris City High School, having a newspaper and an editing staff complete with reporters, has used this freedom for a number of years. This news sheet is sponsored by the Future Business Leaders of America, which is composed of commercial students in their junior and senior years. The talented staff, selected from the club's active membership, functions for the newspaper throughout the school year. This working together as a group and cooperating with one another to accomplish the printing and publication of this newspaper provides valuable experience and preparation for the stu- dents. The benefits from this work, which may not be outstandingly evident now, will very probably be noticeable in the not too distant future. 52 First Row: Leon Adams, Wendell Webb, Larry Pleasant, Melvin Douglas, C. This group uses its knowledge and experience to promote interest in the finer points of sports. Be- cause of its work with lagging interest in hunting safety, courtesy, and legal rules, hunting can be sa- fer and much more enjoyable. In addition to helping the present hunters, the Sportsman's Club helps to train younger boys who wish to learn the sport. These beginners are given a start in the direction of safety and courtesy. The boys not only work for improvement in others but also continually strive for self-improvement. They work toward a more complete knowledge of laws for all hunters. The Sportsman's Club members feel that they can view with pride their share of the improvement in hunting and feel that all their work has its reward. 53 First row: Emma Lou Orr, Judy Henson, Carolyn Johnson, Kay Moye, Pat Allen, Mrs. Ripperdan. Mem- bership is open to all girls, and the physical education director shall be a member exofficio. The yearly dues is twenty-five cents. The G.A.A. either sends two girls to the state G.A.A. camp or uses its treasury funds for the benefit of the school. They conduct sports discussions, demonstrations, and recreations. The popcorn stand, operated by the group at all the ball games, is the major fund- raising project. The All-School Halloween party is usually sponsored by the G.A.A. During the year the organization participates in hikes, basketball and volleyball tournaments, and special parties. After numerous incidents, including the stalling of two buses and a one hour delay be- cause of light failure, the Cardinal eleven were defeated by Palestine 39-6. The Cardinal's first touchdown of the year was scored by senior end Larry Pleasant. and Jerry Cathey. The Cardinals played one of their better games against a strong Johnson City eleven. Through rain and mud the Cards battled on even terms with the Indians before finally succumbing to a 19-6 score. Norris City's first home coming football game was played against the McLeansboro's Foxes. Lead by an all state transfer student from Kansas, who was playing in his first Illinois football game, the Foxes came out on the long end of a 26-0 score. During impressive halftime ceremonies Miss Anna Sue Bryant was crowned Norris City's first Home Coming Queen by senior captain, Melvin Douglas. On November six Norris City seniors closed out their High School career in a blaze of glory. Playing an inspired brand of football, they almost upset Carterville, the final score standing 27-19 infavor of Carterville. Junior end Mike Keasler turned in one of the year's most outstanding individual performance in this game. He grabbed 10 passes, several of them on spectacular catches. Coach Spratt had a difficult task and handled it very well. He had the boys playing heads up ball all the time. Even though the Cardinals failed to win a game, the opposition could truthfully say they had played a game with a fighting team. i 63 s J Ke ith Quarterback Back Leon Full, Back Jim Half Back Quarterback Franklin Healy Half Back Don Half Back e W? .:,,A l 1' Melvin Douglas Center Lat ry Pleasant End James Beam Tackle DeLap Tackle Keasler End Williams Tackle Doyle Wheeler Guard , Y ,,7, 4 34 30, e 4 Front Row: Jim Greathouse, John Crouch, Keith Edwards, Coach, Frank Blackman. They won their first three games of the season, suffering their first defeat at the hands of arch rival Carmi by a 68-51 count. Entering Bridgport Holiday Tourna- ment with a 4 won and 3 lost record, the Cardinals proceeded to capture top honors in the consolation bracket. They copped the crown by turning back a good Allendale five by a 61-57 score. In January the Cardinals took third place in the McLeansboro Blind Tournament. They lost their opening round game to ahot shooting McLeansboro team. They rebounded in the consolation game dropping Albion's lions, 69-67. During the tournament two cardinal re- gulars hung up their jerseys, however, the rest of the team soon took up the slack. The Cardinals got off to a slow start in the Southern Illini Conference, losing their first five games, however, they rebounded to win two of their last three games. At the finish of the season they were in fourth place in the five team conference, the holders of a two and six record in conference play. At the end of regular season play the Cardinals had an overall record of 14 wins and 11 losses. Everything taken into consideration, one would have to say the season was a success and was brought about by the hard work and good sportsmanship of the team and Coach Blackman. 66 Managersg Bill Spence and Ronnie Tarrent. 67 MikoKeas1er John Crouch Jim Gfeathouse Richard Hamilton Larry Pleasant ' Keith Edwards Bobby Hesterly Don D1xon Geyalrl Mayberry Steve Whiteside First Row: Cleatus Roy, Lowell Blake, Wendell Lacefield, Gerald Senior, Bob Spence, Richard Gid- cumbg coach, Bill Spratt. They had a re- cord of two wins and six losses in the Conference, but the record is very deceiving. The Junior Cards played very good ball but the breaks seemed to go against them. One of the high points of the season was a smashing upset of a highly regarded Eldorado five. Outside of the Conference Coach Spratt's charges turned in a record of 4 wins and 8 losses, giving an overall record for the year of 6 wins and 14 losses. The bright showing of the Fresh- man-Sophomore teams gives the Cardinal fans something to look forward to. 70 Varszly Wzeerlcadcrs The four varsity cheerleaders made a very cheerful reason for the peppy crowds this season. The varsity cheerleaders are chosen from the three upper classes. The cheerleaders traveled far and wide with the team---cheering team on to new vic- tories. Hascball The Baseball team headed by Coach Frank Blackman should enjoy a very successful season. The Coach has six returning lettermen to build his team around. Add to this a fine group of underclassmen and one realizes the potential of the team. Six of last years starting nine have graduated, but no difficulty is anticipated in replacing them. The Cardinals possess two of the most outstanding power hitters in this area is Mike Keasler and Jim Greathouse. With these two boys to bulwark the team, it should be a banner year of good, exciting baseball at Norris City. 72 Doyle Ray Henson Phillip Warren Jim Greathouse Larry Pleasant Keasler Ronnie Austin Bob Hesterly John Crouch First Row: Mr. Frank Blackman, Coach, Jim Beam, Keith Edwards, Frank Healy, Doyle Wheeler, Bill Blythe, Don Dixon, Gerald Mayberry, Mr. Bill Spratt, Coach. Crack Led by our new Coach, Bill Spratt, the Varsity Track team will take to the cinder track this spring. After an absence of nearly a decade, track returned to Norris City three years ago. Inthe first two years of competition, the Cardinals have compiled a commendable record while winning their share of the meets. This year should be a very good one for Coach Spratts charges. He has at his service a number of individual stars. These returning lettermen are being bolstered by a banner crop of under classmen. His outstanding boy should be senior Speedster Jim Greathouse who last year copped two seconds in the Regional Meet at Charleston. 74 u As sem bl Y Progr am G A . .A atio n 3 PS6 P341 6 Xoemocixoqx ggsxxoed 6 ?:9ecQx-LX Pfs9e1o'0Xq Ytogtwgof ff-5 P, 99fvseQ0fAX C:-a-foe' fxhensogoixef ffixxece Qs Baewcoqbx 0'a10effXXfaxtKeYJo1gff'YXxe1e Cb peseqovxe Y1oQ31a1ivf6oQXXo10o1e Cwae 9faeXLe,Q0-AX Gfmoef f PXOXOW 'Beta V5 Abs X1v1Xva.kXoofaX Bfalev-GWQXX 'iootwaqveok fax xISc've'a.oe-'o0t0 Va 9fa.ex4eQ0f9X Ga10effxfSovefa-we-'Oo1off?ve1e SLAB '551u11eeNs-6 ?21-faxikivaixoxxe X6 P,-aeeqsvoxq Ysogcwv Afixgo 'vi-cxxoox Gxxowe- 919V-e'C0faXX Gagwa f fC1oe,-511 Aw' 'Beta 996 oi Bien Segcee-wt XBBKYQX 02.1021 f?Cx6.g11fa-S3 f f'Y'oete XX 62.196 f '01 fa-f1f1X9fef 'Bet e og!
