We were really "green Freshmen" that day in August, 1952, when we entered the N. C. H. S. There were sixty-five of us and we must have believed the saying "safety in numbers" for we certainly stuck together. We chose as our freshman officers: President, Gary Ander- son: Vice-President, Lowell McArthy: Secre- tary, Charles Clark: and Treasurer, Carole Harlow. We had several members in the band and were represented by Sally Blacker as cheerleader, and by Kenneth Hunt, Sonny Wardlow, and Freddie Doerner on the basket- ball team. The following year as "silly Sophs", our officers were President, Lowell McArthy: Vice- President, Beverly Millspaugh: Secretary, Carole Harlow: and Treasurer, Esther Mid- kiff. Two of our boys were on the "A" Squard in Basketball: Gary Anderson and Sonny Wardlow. Also we had two cheerleaders, lane DeBoard and Sally Blacker. As "jolly Juniors" we elected as President, Sally Blacker: Vice-President, Gary Anderson: Secretary Lowell McArthy: and Treasurer, Lenore Graves. Our basketball team was really piling up the points with three mem- bers from the junior rank: Gary Anderson, Frank Sawyer, Sonny Wardlow. Our Cheer- leaders were Sally Blacker and lane Deboard. Last fall when we began our senior year with the raising of over four thousand dollars for our trip facing us, we realized how import- ant it was to elect reliable hardworking offi- cers. At elections, we chose as President, Lowell McArthy: Vice-President, Pat Rodgers: Secretary, Reba Barker: and Treasurer, Don- na Dixon. We are represented on the basket- ball team this year by Gary Anderson, Ivan Mills, and Charles Miner. Sally Blacker, Iane DeBoard, and Beverly Millspaugh cheered the boys on to victory. Iuanita Awalt was elected for the DAR Award this year and Iames Aud won the local and district oratorial contests and competed in the sectional. We were all very proud of these two members of the class. Everyone has been very busy this year since every spare moment has been spent trying to earn the money for our trip in the spring. We have had several bake sales, operated the concession stand at all our home ball games, gleaned corn in the fall and are planning other activities for the future. With graduation so near, we are thinking of all the fun we have had together. Perhaps there are a few things that we would change if we had the four years of our high school career to re-live for we have made many mistakes but not one of us would take any- thing for the experiences we have shared. Now, we turn our thoughts from the past to the future, wondering what the coming years hold for us. What ever it is, we will never forget our years at good old N. C. H. S. TH E CARDINAL VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAIVI, under the skillful direction of ,Coach Bob Iones, had a very successful year. In fact, the team was the best to come out of the high school in many years. Conditioning, determination, and the will to win were big factors in the winning of many games. The tearn's most outstanding victories came when they defeated Carrier Mills by 12 points, and when they gloriously won over Carmi 57-55 in a sudden death double overtime. Of course, the team had its ups and downs, but all in all, the squad was really great. The team could not have been a success without the capable guidance of our coach, Mr, Iones. He was always behind the team when their morale was at its lowest, and always some- thing to say to pep the team up. Experience was a help in Winning many games, but drive determination, and a will to win was the fac- tor that pulled the team through. The lVlc- Leansboro and Fairfield games were good examples of this. In the McLeansboro game the score was tied by Norris City with only seven seconds to go. Norris city then went on to win by five points in overtime. The Fair- field game was the last of the season and "chips were really down!" In fall baseball the squad was very success- ful. They overpowered such teams as Mills dPrairie, Enfield, and Crossville. Although the team only played three games in the fall, they showed great potential: with terrific batting power and expert pitching. The team lost last year's second baseman, two out- fielders, a pitcher, and the catcher, but the Vacant positions were quickly and easily filled. Competition was keen in the race for positions and everybody hustled or somebody else played. Several boys were "out for base- ball" and all of them saw action in at least one game. The squad surpassed all expecta- tions oi its fans and proved beyond the sha- dow of a doubt that the team was as good or better than all previous ball clubs. .
