,R C7ZmeZi'eem ggfzif ln industrial arts we are not attempting to produce auto mechanics, electricians or carpenters, but we are trying to give the boys industrial information and appre- ciation of good materials and workmanship, to instill desirable traits and attitudes, to establish some basis for intelligent choice of an occupation, to engender skill in the use of common tools for both leisure time and handy-man activities, and thus to develop intelligent consumers. HOME ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT Since all girls should learn the basic principles of cooking, sewing, and home- making, l-lome Economics courses have their place in the curriculum of a modern school. ln them students learn to prepare for simple and elaborate meals and social functions and to design and make garments l-lome-planning and the elementary care of children are divisions also to be found in this up-to-the-minute department, FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT The main purpose of foreign language study in high school must be acknowl- edged as other than vocational. Perhaps the objective most nearly attainable for the two-year pupil is reading ability, a benefit to the pupil both as an individual and as a member of society. To understand other peoples is another objective of students of foreign language. Through the study of foreign language a pupil becomes aware of language itself, and his own language means a great deal more after a conscious effort to acquire another, Whether the pupil choose French, Spanish, German, or Latin, he may attain these general cultural aims. SCIENCE DEPARTMENT The Science Department at Normandy consists of three courses: biology, chem- istry, and physics, and junior school courses in general science. This department does not hope to turn out finished scientists in the various fields, but hopes rather to develop certain traits necessary for those students who desire to become scientists, as well as to augment those traits that are essential to every-day life. The teachers of science aim to teach the fundamentals of science which are found in a textbook as well as to solve real problems by experimentation carried to a logical conclusion, Each student is expected to practice constantly the arts of observation and self- expression as preparatory to life. Training in the appreciation of the beauties of nature is gained in group experience as well as individual experience, The aim of the Science Department is thus to broaden and deepen and enrich the students' out- look on life.
