TE, ' ' ' 7 5726 .Mya ae , Education at Normandy complete in preparing those pupils who are college-minded, courses which offer possibilities of exact and scientific analysis-these, a school will have. ln addition one must consider that a greater majority of the students will not be so fortunate as to go to college and may be projected at any time into the business of making a living. The school must provide training for good citizenship and the pupil's personal prac- tical affairs by giving the student practice and experience in careful, accurate think- ing and reasoning, and in the handling of simple numerical combinations. COMMERCIAL DEPARTMENT lt is the aim and purpose of the commercial department to discover just what industry demands of its workers and to prepare the students of this department to meet those requirements. The idea of preparation for active life in business is stressed in each division of the commercial training, In typing, final appearance of papers is considered as well as speed and accuracy. ln the junior business and book- keeping classes, the students are encouraged to work at their own rate of speed so that they will get that feeling of responsibility which industry demands, ln the salesmanship classes, realistic sales campaigns and illustrated notebooks on sales topics of the student's own choice are worked out, Commercial law offers a basic knowledge of the common law to the student. MUSIC DEPARTMENT lvlusic, an international language, a science and an art, is offered to students of Normandy in a most complete manner. Students are privileged to take part in glee clubs, a capella choir, band, orchestra, and piano, Music is offered in order that it may enrich the student's life by preparing for a finer use of leisure time, by teach- ing appreciation for music that is heard in everyday life and by assisting those who are interested in following music as a profession to secure a better foundation for further training. INDUSTRIAL ARTS Industrial Education has a very important place in modern education, because the activities in the industrial arts are closely connected with many phases of human life from both the producers' and consumers' standpoint Page Twen ly

Q Qzamam Wm? Egfazt ENGLISH DEPARTMENT Given briefly, these are our objectives and aims in the English Department. Throughout all six years of English, we make an effort to give each child reasonable accuracy in both speaking and writing, the emphasis in the junior school on speech and functional grammar gives way later to emphasis on literature and increased reasoning in oral and written composition, Throughout, we lay stress more on enjoy- ment and appreciation of literature than on the detailed understanding of structure and style, We are developing people for living, for thinking, for pleasure and profit to be derived from reading, not for writing books and criticisms and doing re- search Work. ART DEPARTMENT Normandy students have the privilege of working in one of the finest art depart- ments in this part of the country Une of this department's greatest assets is the fact that a great variety of work is done-anot just sketching and charcoal drawing, but also oil painting, stone work, ceramics, jewelry, leather tooling and wood carving, The goal of this department is not only to develop, under supervision, any phase of art in which the individual is interested, but also to give the student an appreciation of natural and synthetic beauty. ln many cases students have advanced into and beyond these goals and have exercised these advancements to the advantage of the school in general. PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT The purpose behind the physical education program at Normandy is to secure a maximum of enjoyment in our recreational activities, By having group games there is a physical development realized, not by the stereotyped exercises but by recreational group games selected and led by the students themselves. Proper socialization of the students is secured by following the old doctrine, To win without boasting and to lose without alibisf' ln addition to the games, the girls participate in a strenuous program in dancing by which we hope to develop grace, carriage, poise, beauty and strength, Along with the regular classes we have a complete intra-mural program, as well as a full schedule of interschool competitive athletics for both boys and girls. MATHEMATICS Living in a modern world requiring exactness, precision, split-second decisions, balance sheets that balance, and bridges that do not collapse, one can not conceive of any modern school leaving mathematics out of the curriculum, Courses thatare Page Nineteen

,R C7ZmeZi'eem ggfzif ln industrial arts we are not attempting to produce auto mechanics, electricians or carpenters, but we are trying to give the boys industrial information and appre- ciation of good materials and workmanship, to instill desirable traits and attitudes, to establish some basis for intelligent choice of an occupation, to engender skill in the use of common tools for both leisure time and handy-man activities, and thus to develop intelligent consumers. HOME ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT Since all girls should learn the basic principles of cooking, sewing, and home- making, l-lome Economics courses have their place in the curriculum of a modern school. ln them students learn to prepare for simple and elaborate meals and social functions and to design and make garments l-lome-planning and the elementary care of children are divisions also to be found in this up-to-the-minute department, FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT The main purpose of foreign language study in high school must be acknowl- edged as other than vocational. Perhaps the objective most nearly attainable for the two-year pupil is reading ability, a benefit to the pupil both as an individual and as a member of society. To understand other peoples is another objective of students of foreign language. Through the study of foreign language a pupil becomes aware of language itself, and his own language means a great deal more after a conscious effort to acquire another, Whether the pupil choose French, Spanish, German, or Latin, he may attain these general cultural aims. SCIENCE DEPARTMENT The Science Department at Normandy consists of three courses: biology, chem- istry, and physics, and junior school courses in general science. This department does not hope to turn out finished scientists in the various fields, but hopes rather to develop certain traits necessary for those students who desire to become scientists, as well as to augment those traits that are essential to every-day life. The teachers of science aim to teach the fundamentals of science which are found in a textbook as well as to solve real problems by experimentation carried to a logical conclusion, Each student is expected to practice constantly the arts of observation and self- expression as preparatory to life. Training in the appreciation of the beauties of nature is gained in group experience as well as individual experience, The aim of the Science Department is thus to broaden and deepen and enrich the students' out- look on life.
