Tim THE TRAIL NINETEEN SIXTY VOLUME FIFTY-FOUR NORMAN HIGH SCHOOL NORMAN, OKLAHOMA Just a building and just a campus, but it represents much more than that. It represents a living body and a tangible spirit. The slow realization of growing up, the scent of glory as sweet as roses, the bubbling sounds of laughter and sadness and anger and love swell within these walls. One day soon we will leave to face complexities as large as life itself. Over- night we must make new friends, learn new facts, open new fron- tiers; but we leave with the assur- ance that “Victory, victory is our cry.” An I n ter I u jvw'is ! r-Mo r A T w J The Theme Behind us the happy, carefree dreams of youth . . . ahead of us the promising realities of turitv ... the time between is an interlude k j as high school. Now is our time of friends a and grades, tears and tejfi plomas. As students, respect to ou ball team rb winningrfi ncr-upAoX the and chorus received superior ratings ir contests, the Juniors industriously worked on the play and the prom; and the Seniors took one last, longing look at it all. Here, then, is an attempt to capture the fresh- ness of the events that occur in the most won- derful time of our lives, the interlude between childhood and maturity . . . AN INTERLUDI' TNJ'IME. -GERRY REECE f r j, a ' The 1960 TRAIL Editor GERRY REECE A Dedication rum to the time we have ini', untiring and cheerful She is When our thoughts rctu spent in high school, there is one person we especially remember. She is a teacher under whose leadership learning is interesting and challenging, but certainly she is much more. She is the sponsor who has worked with us and many groups before us. Although we ourselves tire and grumble, she is always there work- ing, untiring and checrtulv' She is the example who has improved our judgments and ideals. And especial- ly she is the friend whose guidance has helped us to sec our problems clearly and face them with a sense of direction. VV'ith our deep gratitude and apprecia- tion, we dedicate the ’59-’60 TRAIL to this beloved person, Mrs. Nellie Childs. [5] [6] of Contents A’vA HONOR TIME y tV V r. GAME TIME PLAY TIME . Much time and effort arc given by the Norman School Board, backed by the people of Norman, to solv- ing these problems. However, the completion comes as we move away from NHS, never to return again as a part of the school we helped to build. This year the seniors compiled a record to be marveled at and remembered. The holding of numerous school offices, trips with the band and chorus, and our success- ful Trail Queen campaign—all help to make this year One of remembrance. Laughter, tears, excitements and honors all go into making up this magical time; a time, which in our eyes, no class can ever begin to compare with. It is a recording of the records we have compiled here, the records which help to make an interlude in time. JAMES ADAMS: Band ‘58; Boys’ Glee Club ’60; Wrestling '60. With new-found class spirit and pride we supported our Trail Queen candidate and worked hard to make our prom unforgettable. Although we look forward to our senior year with anticipa- tion, we realize nothing can compare with being a Junior! Dick Self, vice-president; Jan Wade, secretary-treasurer; and Quay Parker, president; were the 1960 junior class officers. The Junior class sponsors were Mr. Majors, Mrs. Robinson, Mrs. Fuller, Mrs. Smith, and Mr. Taylor. “Don’t youJever close your mouth, Judy?” Othcrfhaving a happy time arc Sylvia Martin, Bob handsaw, Rita Mobley, and Robert Smith. True to this description the members of our class have filled this year with a great deal of fun, but we have also ac- complished much. Many sophomores have ex- celled in scholarship, lettered in athletics, and become leaders in the clubs and organizations of our school. From our hard work and enthusias- tic campaigning for our first Trail Queen can- didate. we have emerged as a group with an un- deniable pride in our class. We are happy to complete this year and look forward eagerly to the future. “Altogether now, one, two, three.” Kay Tankcrslcy, Gail Lawson, Nancy Carter, Judy Carpenter, Terry Ridley, and Lynn Edwards arc out for their daily ex- ercise. In it we have tried to capture each event so that it may be a true record of the year. In spite of tense moments, last-minute rushes, and close dead- lines, we have thoroughly enjoyed putting out this book; and we hope that the result of our work is all you would have it be. After the last deadline, the staff began work for the coronation in April. The theme, “Carousel,” was carried out beautifully in emerald green, yellow, and white. The soft language of Old Mexico is the ex- citing study which led to the organizing of the Spanish Club, because the students wished to obtain a greater understanding of Spanish speak- ing people. The more the members learn about the people, their way of life and culture, the more interesting the language becomes. The Spanish students were again invited to attend the Spanish Fiesta held at the University of Okla- homa where their lovely queen, Pat Primrose, competed with all the other queens of Spanish Clubs from over the state. In the gay garb of the masters of the Medi- terranean, the members ate, drank, and were merry at their first Roman banquet at which time they honored their queen. Patti Sharp, treas- urer. Climaxing the year, the club spent a day at the state Junior Classical League Convention and ended the year with a picnic at the farm of the president, Ann YViest. The Stu- dent Council year begins with helping at en- rollment, which is followed by the Hodwy Hop. The first school day is started by the active members with the Thought for the Day and Howdy cards. Out come the student directories with telephone numbers and addresses for get- ting better acquainted. Future Teachers Improve The Future Teachers of America, sponsored by Mrs. Viola Smith, was organized in Norman High to enable students to explore more deeply the profession of teaching. To do this they hear speakers from varied fields of education and discuss the opportunities offered in these. An especially interesting program was the study of projectors and extra material to be used in the class room. In the spring they give a tea for the teachers in our school. The officers are Jov Monroe, president; Verna Marie Moss, vice president; Jo Anna Mason, secretary; Diane Neaves, treasurer; and Sandy Johnson, program chairman and reporter. “Now at the count of three ...” Sandra Johnson seems to be leading the FTA members Phyllis Gardner, Verna .Moss, and Sharon Mciklc in a little game at one of their meetings. Science Club Grows Because the realm of science with its space- ships and “bugs is fascinating, last year several students had an idea to form a science club. The idea grew and flourished and developed into a thriving organization. The members sold book covers to support their undertakings, and many of the industrious ones assembled projects which they entered in the science fair. Because of Mr. Morris, their sponsor, the members mixed fun with learning in exploring such places as Tinker Field, the radio isotope laboratory, the observatory, the reactor and Turner Falls where they celebrated the end of a successful year with a picnic. “It's mine! shout Science Club members Sharon Tank- crsley, Murray Shaeffer, Roscllcn Anderson, and Judy Talley as they scuffle at a meeting.
