Hillard Again this year the mixed choir, under the capable direction of Duncan Miller, enriched the cultural life of the students, faculty, and com- munity. Appearing in both the Winter and Spring Concerts, the choirs and girls' glee club sang sacred and secular selections. The mixed choir appeared at the state music contest at Peoria in the class A division, as did the girls' choir and the boys' choir. So many vocal soloists and ensembles were active that it was necessary to hold a preliminary to determine the entries. Two girls' ensembles, two mixed ensembles and many soloists competed in music contests, receiving honors. Officers of the girls' choir were Joyce Reum, president, Nancy Myers, vice -president, Connie Fese, secretary, and Norma Watkins, librarian. Norma Watkins accompanied the group. Boys' choir was headed by Harlan McBurney, presidentg Bruce Otto, vice -president, Ray Ropp, sec- retary, and David Speers, librarian. Judy Wasson and Nancy Myers were accompanists. Each choir progressed musically during the year which contributed to the success of the mixed choir. The accompanists for the group are Norma Watkins and Nancy Myers. Cade, J. Sieg. ROW 2: C. Robert Sharp James EWCDS Head of Industrial Arts Dept. Industrial Arts Diversified Occupations Diversified Occupations is a junior-senior course which offers two credits toward high school gradu- ation. Students alternate on a half-day basis between regular school courses and on the job training. Stu- dents are required to take two academic classes and one other class related to the occupation of their choice. A training schedule is set up for rotating the student from one job to another within the occupation. Students were trained in fourteen different occupations during the year. Training stations were located in Towanda, Carlock, Bloomington, and Normal. This class permits students to train for specific trade while earning learners' wages. They must work at least fifteen hours per week. On March 20, 1958 the students from University High, Bloomington High, and Normal High attended the annual banquet held in their honor. ROW 1: J. Zami Under the able direction of Mr. Duncan Miller, the Normal Community High School band provided much pleasure and entertainment for the students and faculty members. Participating in the I.S.N.U. Homecoming parade and band contest, it received trophies for the best playing band and the best overall performance. The appearance of the band at all home football and basketball games added pep to these events. The 107 members of the band combined with the choir to provide the traditional Christmas concert. In the spring another fine music concert was given by the music department. Included in the social events of the music department were a chili supper given by Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Miller and the annual spring picnic.
