We, the seniors leaving NCHS, will always remember your cheerful smile and helping hand. Your refreshing sense of humor has brightened the days of students since you first came to NCHS. Your words of advice have helped many fellows and girls over the rough spots of a teen-ager's life. As we look back upon our happy years at Normal Com- munity, we will know that the high morals and standards of our school have been built by teachers like you. Every person who has graduated in the years past and who will graduate in the yearsvto come will benefit greatly from your knowledge, wisdom,- and friendship. i 06 QW: : -Q. Seniors, as you turn the pages of this Reverie, let us hope it will bring back to you many memories. You have won a place in the hearts of all of us by your high standards of character, personality, and cheerfulness. May your future be filled with continued happiness and success. I also hope that you will not forget us, but come back often. My heartiest congratulations to each and everyone of you. uperinienalenf A. B., M. A., Culver-Stockton, University of Missouri, University ol Chicago. My favorite bit of literature is Bessie Stan- ley's definition of success. This is the kind ol life l wish for each of you. He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often and loved much, who has won the respect of intelligent men, the trust of pure women and the love of little children, who has filled his niche and accomplished his task, who has left the world better than he found it, whether by an improved poppy, a perfect poem or a rescued soul, who has never lacked appreciation of earths beauty or failed to express it, who always looked for the best in others and gave them the best he had, whose life was an inspiration, whose memory a benedictionf' SEATED: H. Board of Education UNIT DISTRICT NUMBER FIVE The year I949 brought many new changes to the world. Normal Community High School was no exception. This year marked the formation of a new unit school system. Following the practice of many other towns and cities in lllinois, the schools of Carlock, Hudson, Towanda, and Normal were consolidated to form the present district, officially called McLean County Unit District Number Five. Our district is only one of 350 such districts in the state and has a total enrollment of l,85O. District Five operates twelve busses which transport 500 students daily. The first curricular study to be made by the teachers of the new :strict is e imp curriculum. This course of study will serve as the basis of science instruction in our schools during the coming years. Next year another maior subject will be chosen for study until all have been improved. It is hoped that the new experiment in elementary and secondary education will prove to be a beneficial one to students, enabling them to receive more and better training in their particular interests, which will, in time, make them d' ' ' th ' rovement of the science more useful citizens. The students from other high schools who are now attending classes at Normal feel that they are a regular part of the student body and take an active interest in school affairs. L. E. Starke, superintendent of our school system, very clearly expresses the opinion of all concerned with the unit consolidation in these words: I feel that much has been accomplished in such a short time. However, there are many things remaining to be done. lt has been thought best to move rather slowly, to be sure that when changes are made they are for the best. ...saw-V.. 1, . .. N.. . -. . As the curtain opens, we view an entirely new scene. The secondary school consolidation movement in Illinois has lead to the formation of a unit district at NCHS comprised of students from Carlock, Hudson, Towanda, and Normal. As we began making new friends and renewing old acquaintances, we recall some of the events in the earlier acts of our play. The class played an important part in Homecoming every year. As freshmen, they had charge of the bonfire, as sophomores-the parade, and juniors-stunt night. Last year we gave the Junior-Senior Prom and chose Connie Moore as our queen with Alice Jayne Casebeer and. Marianne Jones as her attendants. Yes, as under- classmen we were held in awe by the many thrilling sports events, mystery and comedy dramas, class socials, and school parties. But now we return to our present scene where there is a flurry of activity on the stage. It was our turn this year to accept the leadership of the organizations that we had served in for the past three years. The first action to take place was the election of class officers. Norman Niepagen was chosen as president, Darrel Spang, vice- president, and Don Halsema, secretary-treasurer. The committees for Homecoming- also began functioning. There was much work to be done before the big night and everyone helped to make it a successful affair. Jane Oliver Shifflet was elected queen with Donna Adams and Norine Arends as her attendants. ln the series of assembly programs presented by each class, the seniors were the first to appear. The theme represented proper manners for teen-agers. We also sponsored an all-school party in March. Jim Flavin's band played for the dance, while square dancing and table games were also enjoyed. The decorations pictured var- ious signs of spring. As guests of the Junior Class this year we experienced something different in the way of a prom. The Juniors gave us a banquet followed by a dance at the Wesleyan Memorial Building. This was the last year for many of the boys in the field of high school athletics. Al Ehlers, Ray Gehrt, Hewitt Hafer, Don Halsema, and Darrell Spang are to be commended on their performances in football and basketball. Not to be forgotten was their faithful manager, Travis Inman, and, of course, the cheerleaders Marianne Jones, Jane Oliver Shifflet, Elaine Wiese, Wayne Kron, and Frank Mullare. The various class plays, music and speech department contests, and Junior Town Meetings helped to make our senior year a very profitable and exciting one. Many seniors held prominent places in the school. The Reverie was edited by Norine Arends and the Ink- spot by Martha Jacobus. Danna Adams won the D.A.R. good citizenship award and Ray Gehrt presided over the Student Council. Hewitt Hafer was elected president of the N Club and Elaine Wiese president of the G.A.A. H. J. McElroy led the Science Club, Alice Jayne Casebeer, Dramatics, and Martha Jacobs, Thespians. The l.A.T.A. was headed by Jack Stephens, F.T.A., Helen Richard, Latin Club, Connie Moore, National Honor So- ciety, Joan lmig, F.H.A., Donna Adams, F.F.A., Harold Siegworth. Hewitt Hafer was president of the Band Or- ganization, Marianne Jones, Girls' Chorus, and Harold Anderson, Boys' Chorus. After careful consideration the class voted to leave to the school a much needed speaker's stand, which, it is hoped, will in future years bring back memories of the class of '49. lt was also decided to have on outside speaker for the Commencement program. Much of our Senior Class success we owe to our sponsors, Miss Bopp, Miss Garihee, Mrs. Haley, and Mr. Allen. To them go our sincere thanks and appreciation. Happiness was mixed with tears as graduation approached, for we began to wonder where those senior days had gone. High school had been exciting to all of us, but now the curtain was closing on the last act of our play. It was time for us to put into practice the knowledge we had acquired. Come what may, mem- ories of our high school days will always remainl Cass of 1Q5O 5 .A '95 C' Q: Marvin Bonny Joan Williams Madison Burdefle Henry Schultz Romaine Zehr Mildred Golden Ronnie Evelsizer Winford McElroy Fred Pelricl: Delmer Hunter Bob Caldwell Kenny Reesar iff ll G' ' Q , .i ' 4 iv , ' o M 1 . For the first time, the chorus entered by a candlelight processional for the Christmas selections. Also for the first time there were no curtain pulls which gave the concert a more professional atmosphere. The Band, which was bigger and better than ever this year due to the formation of the new unit district, began a year packed full of activities by putting on outstanding performances at every home football game. In the fall they won the trophy at ISNU marching band contest for having the most outstanding stunt. The band had sixty members, seventeen of whom were freshmen and six transfer students. Adding sparkle and pep to the home bas- ketball games, the band played during every half time. Annual winter and spring concerts were presented The officers of the band were as follows: Hewitt Hafer, president, Jack Stephens, vice-president, and Gloria Zehr sec- retary. The girls' chorus composed of sixty-five was considered among the outstanding ones in the state. Although it was over balanced with forty first sopranos, the eleven second sopranos improved much and could be heard. The chorus accomplished much in achieving harmony by listening to others. For the first time in the history of the school there was a boys' chorus, which was large enough to make appearances without the girls' chorus. There were twenty boys' voices included in the group. The officers of the girls' chorus were as follows: Marianne Jones, president, Pat McBurney, vice-president, Norine Arends, treasurer. Harold Anderson assisted by Dave Kash- ner and Al Ehlers were officers of the boys' group. There were several smaller musical groups. Among these were the girls' ensembles I and Il, boys' ensemble, mixed ensemble, the brass quartet, and the clarinet trio. We also had an enthusiastic pep band and several soloists. All of these made outstanding performances at school, community affairs, and in both the district and the state music contests. 5 2 . ' 5 L 5 S 2 5 2 ROW ONE: M. Byevly, P. Guinnee, J. Galbrealh, A. The trophy for the best stunt was presented to the band. The Thespians received honorable mention. Other entries were the FHA, FFA, and Dramatics Club. After the stunt show a pep session was held around a bonfire. This was sponsored by the Freshman Class. Before the football game with Clinton there was a parade of club and class floats under the supervision of the Sophomore Class. FFA received first award for the club float and the Freshman Class received first award for the class float. The grand award went to the Dramatics Club. The Queen, Jane Oliver Shifflet, and her at- tendants-Norine Arends and Donna Adams -were presented during the half at the foot- ball game. Jane was crowned queen by Norman Niepagen, senior class president, at the dance which featured Kenny Eugene and his eleven piece orchestra. The class of '49 will hold many happy memories of the Junior-Senior Prom which they sponsored last year. Neptune's Night carried out the underwater theme. Serving as general prom chairman and master of ceremonies was Ray Gehrt. The standing committee chairmen were Alice Jayne Case- beer, dance band, Al Ehlers, invitations and programs, Elaine Wiese, decorations, and Barbara Workman, refreshments. Jack Coombes' eleven piece band performed amid sand, shells, ferns and sea serpents. Follow- ing the grand march, Connie Moore was crowned queen by Ray Gehrt. She was at- tended by Alice Jayne Casebeer and Mari- anne Jones. 4. ,ix - + f mb 4 ,. fr 5' - Hx . k -. fi. 'A ' A XS .
